Title: MY 1st RX7 - opinions/advice welcome
Post by: jsrx7 on July 11, 2007, 08:31:49 PM
Hi all,

I picked up my first RX7 at the weekend. Pictures are below. What do you think?

Some basic info on the car:
fresh import
45000 miles
fairly standard apart from:
mazdaspeed spoiler
17 inch alloys
intake and exhaust
turbo timer
Apexi AFC

After driving the car for a few days now there are a few things I\'ve noticed and was wondering if there was anything I should be worried about. Sorry about my lack of knowledge and i\'ve already searched around the forum for most of these things so any extra advice is appreciated.

The main difference I have noticed with the car compared to my MR2 is that it seems a lot more difficult to change gear. Especially into 2nd. Or is this to be expected? Or does it sound like my gearbox could just be on the way out?

Also the car doesnt start instantly. It kind of sounds like its winding up for a few seconds and then kicks in. It always does start though. Then once started the revs seem to stutter about for a couple minutes until it becomes constant at about 8000 revs. Does any of this sound like something I should be worried about?

Also, when I start it up I get a fair amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust. This carries on for a short while before it completely dissapears and I dont seem to get any smoke when driving after that.

Again, sorry if any of these are stupid questions.

Thanks a lot,

Jon.

Its the Mazdaspeed one. seems fairly common on quite a few rx7\'s from what ive seen. Sorry I dont know where you can get them from but i would guess there not to hard to find.

Worth popping it down the road to WGT in Middlewich for a health check - certainly better to know it\'s healthy than worry about every new noise and vibration :)

congrats on the car.....looks like a very clean example.  I\'m in no way a RX7 expert but I found this thread very funny but very comforting also. http://mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35876 (http://mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35876)

It kinda put me at ease knowing that some of the \'issues\' i had with the car were things I shouldn\'t necessarily be worried about.

From what I\'ve picked up............

Smoke on start up.................don\'t worry.....all RX7\'s like a quick smoke!
2nd Gear.........always a bit clunky for the first few mins. Hold the clutch down for 2 seconds before engaging 2nd (helps a little). It should be OK as the car warms up.

Anyway, I\'ve found this forum very useful and some of the members extremely helpful. [They don\'t get annoyed when every new person asks exactly the same questions!:Laugh]

Hope you enjoy the car. Certainly looks sweet. :3gears-rh

I might just do that. I hear there just about the best place to take an RX7?

Quoteis that 8000 revs  or 800  :)

haha. definitely 800.

Cheers, and thanks for the comments evo_ray.

The other thing im worried about is the fact the Apexi AFC thats fitted has all its settings at 0 at the moment. Should I definitely be using this with it having the intake and exhaust mods?

Hi Mate, welcome to the, if you do a search on here you could find a wealth of info also as reccomended by iaint.. get it to WGT and I would say drive it off boost before you have it checked if you\'re in any doubt about the map!!!!

Above all enjoy the car!!!

Very nice indeed. I had a silver one before now. Changing the orange indicators for clear finish off a silver car in my opinion. Lovely lovely car.

Thanks all for the comments.

QuoteChanging the orange indicators for clear finish off a silver car in my opinion.

Thats the first thing I thought to do! Clear ones definitely look better on silver. I have found a couple of sources for these but if any one can recommended some that would be good. Some of the ones i have seen look a bit cheap!

may well have to come along to that. Looks like its just down the M6 from what ive read, fairly close for me.

Quotewelcome jon, nice colour you picked there

Cheers. Was the best colour in my opinion when I was looking. I was after silver or black one but I think silver shows off the shape of the car better.

I would get it remapped for UK fuel if I were you. That PFC will be mapped for Jap fuel so you could be running a bit lean. May as well get it the once over at WGT while your at it.

I dont think its mapped at all at the mo! Everything is just at 0 on the AFC so its not adjusting anything as far as I know. Could this really cause much damage with only fairly light mods with the intake and exhaust?

always better safe than sorry with these cars I have found.

A health check will cost you a few quid and will check the A/F ratio and everything, could save you thousands.

Nice car and welcome to the club. Wgt is the closest specialist to you. He is expensive but your getting it done 100% right. Do you mean apexi power fc or apexi avc? because the avc is a boost controllor and the power fc is a mappable ecu. 2 totally different gadgets. It will be fine with your mods on the stock ecu if thats what you have. If you do have the power fc, even better. As for the side indicators, i have these on mine http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-Probe-Side-Repeaters-Crystal-Clear-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ300129564241QQihZ020QQcategoryZ21654QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It says that its an Apexi super AFC - air flow converter. And thats just about all I know about it. Have no idea how to use it at the moment.

cheers, looks like they might do the job. And cheaper than the ones i\'ve seen. I didnt realise I could get some that were not specific to the rx7. I was thinking about replacing the other orange ones further forward as well.

And im going to take everyones advice and get in touch with WGT. Has anyone got an idea how much it will cost for a quick once over and possibly getting it mapped??

heres some info on the AFC:
http://www.alamomotorsports.com/apexi/safc.html (http://www.alamomotorsports.com/apexi/safc.html)

Mine is no where near as flashy as the ones shown on there by the way. Must be an older one.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? think its any good?
