Title: how to change the mileage ?
Post by: koopturbo on July 11, 2007, 01:04:14 PM
Nothing dogy, just my rex in an inport and as soon as she hit the uk it was converted to MPH but the mileage was never altered. I would like to change the mileage so it\'s showing all Miles and not half KM and half Miles if you know what i mean.

Am i going to have to go a rx7 specialists ? how dose it work? Can i do it myself? (with a PFC or something?)

And also, is it worth it. I\'m thinking of selling it soon and thought it would sell better with less mileage on the clock then having a high number and me telling them halfs KM and the other miles???

:Hammer

Cheers

Leighton (FD3s 97 type RS if anyones intrested lol offers)

It\'s illegal to alter the mileage on the clocks, for whatever reason.

QuoteI\'m thinking of selling it soon and thought it would sell better with less mileage on the clock then having a high number and me telling them halfs KM and the other miles???

And this is one of the reasons why it\'s illegal: it\'s making it look like it\'s done less \'distance\' than it really has.

The only time you can change the mileage displayed is if you change the clocks.

This is my understanding of it at any rate.

Well, My RX7 was converted in Miles, but I\'m from Luxembourg (Is in Km\'s there)!

Is it possible return in Km\'s if I take out (the parts to converted in miles)??

Could i have a conflict with the ECU (programmed in miles)?

Thanks
Pedro

It is not illegal to change the mileage of your own personal car, but it is illegal to knowingly sell the car on without telling the new owner of its genuine mileage.  (I think thats right anyway!)

Sounds about right. Probably. I\'m doubting myself recently.

But, then, as was pointed out, he;s from luxembourg, so the laws may differ anyway

I have no intention of doing anything illegal. I just want to put the clock in miles. eg, the cars done say 40,000 km in japan. Then it got converted to MPH and has been going up in miles ever since. It\'s been in the uk for 2 years now and is showing 80,000 on the clock but it\'s not done 80,000 miles has it! It\'s done 40,000km + 40,000 miles. So it\'s realy done 64,860 miles (if my maths are right lol) so that is illegal is it not? I will need it working out and converting so it shows only the miles it coverd.

I\'m i making any sence ?

Cheers

I\'m sure there\'s people who will do this for you and give you a certificate to go with it, to show it\'s a genuine reason.

Rather than the old traders trick of stick a post-it in there with "Oh no! Not again!" written on it ;)

I wouldn\'t bother to be honest.  Its gonna look dodgy - think most buyers would be put off by winding the odometer back, even if its for a genuine reason.  Could fail an hpi check on it, and your service history is going to be hard to interpret too :eek

Most people buying an import will expect mileage part in kms and part in miles anyway.

I hated this when trying to find myself an RX I was so happy to see the exact car I wanted and it still showing KM. I felt so much more comfortable than the ones where people were trying to justify the mileage.

It may just of been me being over cautious.:Hammer

i looked into doing this myself, we can reprogramme chips in work and edit code but coud\'nt see the pattern in the code in order to alter it to an exact mileage, what i could do is copy a chip with the correct mileage on and use that however. I phoned round loads of places and it was either £250 or they couldnt do it. In fact only two companies i found last year could do it.

Tried some dodgey people too and they couldnt do it becasue of the type of car.

Where does this?

I would be interested as I\'ve just fitted a new engine to the car. Obviously I wouldn\'t hold back the mileage of the shell from any potential buyer.

a while back there was someone i noticed on ebay offering a "mileage adjustment service" specifically for the rx7 fd but it involved sending the clocks&dials to him and waiting 2 weeks, dunno on the authenticity if the procedure.

Right lets clear a few things up here.....................

IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO ALTER MILEAGES !!!!!! but as someone has already pointed out it only becomes an offence when the car is sold on knowing the true miles and not stating the true miles to the new owner.

As i do this for a living as i own Digidash Northwest and before you all start calling me fit to burn the majority of my work involves transfering the original miles of a vehicle to a second hand or brand new cluster as clocks are like any other component on a car they malfunction and need replacement.:yes

Now as far as the REX 7 \'s concerned its a one off beast in the mileage recalibrating world it can\'t be changed in the usual way in the eeprom or micro like most vehicles. You can\'t use the original data set and change it from that you have to have stacks and stacks of data sets with as many different miles on as you can then pick the nearest one to the customers request and reinstall that back to the chip the only advantage is we accumulate another data set (the data set we saved in the first place) which could be useful to a different customer.Which explains why the pricing is all over the place as some will have data sets coming out of their ears and others will have to buy them in,but most won\'t touch the REX 7 as there just not worth the hassle for the money as there such a pain of a thing in that respect...........................

Hope this clears a few things up..........................:Thumbs-up

I think thats basically what i meant, you need another set of data with the miles you require.
