Title: Pick your brains about the Loom and diagnostics
Post by: leon on July 08, 2007, 01:37:58 PM
Im trying to diagnose an electrical fault on the wastegate and precontroll solenoids, do you know if the ground (b/w) is common for ALL the solenoids around that area? as im looking at the electrical diagrams and i only see 1 b/w on the ecu harness! :Hammer

im getting the two error codes saying its either a open or short circuit, ive replaced the solenoids with a pair that shoudl be working have doen the ol click test on them and they do click.

Is there another way i can try prove the solenoids are broken as i may be barking up the wrong tree (such as putting a resistor in the line) if so what type do i need

Thankyou :)
Leon

I think I may be in a similar situation, im getting a 45 error code for the charge control solenoid.

The solenoids are fine, they hold pressure in the correct way with/without voltage so I have been hunting for the problem in the wiring.

The wiring diagrams is your friend in all of this, the B/W wire coming to the solenoids is +12v from my understanding of the diagram the ECU is responsible for the ground side of the circuit.

The circuit can be trace from the +12v on the battery:

30Amp EGI Fuse
EGI Main Relay
X-05 Connector (Blue connector near the ECU)
Solenoids.

My problem might not be the same as yours but I think I developed a short between the Main Relay and the X-05 connector (not 100% sure yet, becuase im still working on it). What I did to figure this out was remove all the connections on the cicuit, which amounts to the 30amp EGI Fuse, the relay, ECU connections, the X-05 connector, the Solenoids, the X-07 connector (big/blue under the steering column dash)  By checking for voltage over the 30amp EGI and adding the parts in 1 by 1 working from the battery (E.g the next thing to add in is the EGI Relay) and wait for voltage over the fuse terminals this apparantly indicates a short in the system, mine was after the EGI Relay and before the X-05 connector.

This is my interpretation of the FSM method for finding the short and I think it led me in the right direction but I have yet to reassemble the car to fully verify that.

Good Luck,

James

YIKES! sounds like ive got a hell of a task on my hands then. i wans kinda hopeing it would just be a case of checking continuity from the Solenoid to the ecu. so am i right in saying all the solenoids share a common ground on the Ecu (1 wire) i think in this case it was b/w

Have a look at

http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/files/manuals/1993%20RX-7%20FSM/_Z_Wiring_Diagram.pdf (http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/files/manuals/1993%20RX-7%20FSM/_Z_Wiring_Diagram.pdf)

Page 30/34

On page 34 there are the solenoids your talking about, the ground is on the other side of the solenoid, not the B/W cable, unless your talking about the ground coming from the ECU, Terminals 4A 4B.  To be honest thats not something I have looked into.  GOod thing to know though, how does the ECU ground those solenoids, via terminals connected or via its casing thats bolted to the car, I always assumed it was the casing but I am probably wrong after seeing those ground terminals.

You could check for continuity from the Ground terminal on the solenoids connectors to the ECU terminal first, make sure you have a circuit there.

Cheers! just out of interest are the connectors on the ECU of your Car Fluro Yellow? just makeing sure its not slightly differant on mine with it being a knightsports ecu :2Rolleyes   Sounds like i may have a common issue with the ground (altho i dont understand why you would have a single wire from the 2 solenoids back to the ECU - doesnt make sense for controll purposes!) for these two plugs, as i have put a LED over the plugs terminals and i do get a flash when i koko. One of them stays lit the other just flash\'s.

Ive been looking at all the wireing diagrams i can find for this and they all show the solenoids joining to one wire that eventualy snakes its way back to the ecu! if it was this wire that was at fault, wouldnt i simply not have the whole damn lot missing! if thats the case maybe its a break prior to it joining this \'wire\' ?:2Rolleyes

or am i reading the workshop manual too litral. :wiggle

Yea, my ECU Connectors are yellow

My intepretation of the ground wires for the solenoids are the ones on page 34 that go directly to the ECU, not the shared B/W I think thats +12v.

that makes more sense now james :)

Yup, what he said :Giggle  I think I\'ve found the solenoids you\'re talking about. Is it the turbo control 1 and 2? If so, then they do share a wire back to the ECU.

What codes are you getting?
