Title: Possible Cosmos transplant???????
Post by: RX7 R2 on July 05, 2007, 06:54:58 PM
Hi guys,

Hoping for some help form you big power guys who are running RE engines. I’ve just heard about a Cosmos being stripped and I have chance to buy the engine. At the minute I’m waiting for some info on it but I don’t really know what I should be buying. I have countless questions and hope some of you maybe able to help by answering them for me.

What engines did the Cosmos come with? I keep hearing everyone mention 13b and 20b but don’t really know the difference. I’ve only been in the rotary scene for a year or so and am still very green about what’s what. I know you can get more power out of the RE rather than the standard REW which is in my FD due to bigger ports, I think???

So what should I be taking out of this car other than the engine, ancillaries? Gear box? Fueling system? ECU? Am I better just to buy the whole car off of him and scrap the shell when I’ve done?:xconfused

you are correct about the ports the 13b in the cosmo has them so is a good one for more power - warthog on here runs one so he is good to ask re that

the 20b however is another kettle of fish, for a start it has another rotar!

for BIG power it is very good however costs are higher so bear that in mind. Normski on here runs one in his fd so is a good person to ask.

however remember as fun as it is they are running HUGE power in very specialist tuned cars so think about exactly what you are after and how much you wanna spend.

Cheers M4DRX. Only just started looking into it since this chance has come up. The tripple rotos deff not for me from what I\'ve just found out it\'s too specialised with too many costs for what I want/could afford.

The 13b route sounds practical and affordable as a project over some months. My concerns at the min is that I don\'t wanna get half of what I need then find out down the line the bit\'s I\'ve missed are gonna bump up the costs.

there are plenty of bits that are transferable that could go on yours but gains arent huge in having the re engine just better for big power as it basically breathes better etc

as i say condering this if your engine has loads of life in then i wouldnt go to the trouble of taking a blown or risky block if yours is still ok but depends on what you have and the compression of it and the re block.

basically if you have a blown block in yours and a re block which is blown then go for the re and rebuild it and if you go big power route you will have some extra ponies but if you have a good engine then just transfer some bits or build the re then put in when complete and up to spec and sell yours etc etc

At the minute I\'ve had very few problems with mine but couldn\'t go with out the RX I enjoy it to much. :burnout

The intial plan is to leave mine how it is (well engine wise anyway) and slowly get the RE block built up so either when mines does go pop, as they all do at some time, or when I\'ve got the RE engine ready I can just drop it in. I know sounds so much simpler that it\'s going to be.

I\'m not looking at being some kind of superstar and imagioning a million break but 400 appears to be a nice realistic mark and step from where I am now.:Thumbsup! But plans are only plans till the wheels are moving I\'ve still got miles of reasurch to do before I even lay a spanner.

you are aware that an RE engine mounts in a different way to an REW (RE engine mounts are on the centre iron, REW on the rear)..
You could take the cosmo geerabox if you fancy going down the automatic route (all cosmos are autos)....
I would imagine therefore that youd need a different ecu to run the RE engine in an fd unless you do use the auto...even then, Im not sure the other plugs from the FD car loom are compatible with the RE ecu.
A lot to think about when doing this.... i certainly wouldnt consider it!
Is your engine blown? If so i may be able to help you out on that front!

mounting an re is easier and cheaper than the whole auto rubbish!

like i said mate talk to those who have done it :)

good luck btw

You will need to speak to one of the tuners that have done this conversion for full spec details. Geff ( RE:WORX) built my set up from what I had already on my  REW engine and transfered needed items over onto the 13b RE engine.
Good luck if you do decide to do it but get Tuner advice first and cost it all in detail. HTH.:wave

before you do any of this you need to decide what power you want, unless you want more than 500 hp then there is no point.

You cant run it on twins without shed loads of grief, the only reason to go RE is if you want really big power, but then you need a big turbo to get the benefit which means big fuel system, bit exhaust, bit FMIC or V Mount, ECU etc etc.

if you do get an RE, it will need rebuilding to get the benefit then as mentioned above, mounts are different.

If you are happy 450 - 500 then stick with the REW because unless you can port and rebuild the engine youself and do the required fabrication your self you are looking at big bucks for no actual benefit because the REW is more than capable of producing the power you need.

You wont need the gear box and its very difficult to get a cosmo auto box working in an FD, trust me, we tried.

all figures quoted are FLHP

No I did know that, thanks. As mentioned I\'m still looking into what\'s involved which was what I\'m hoping to find out from this thread. I\'ve only started to consider it as I\'ve possibly got the chance of getting hold of one of these engines. There still lots of scope for it to go pear shaped yet.

No wouldn\'t go auto, I prsume you can modify it to take a manual box?

No my engine isn\'t blow it is just an idea which I am considering as I don\'t know where I want to go with my RX yet.

Thanks warthog, as mentioned it\'s only an idea at the min. The cost may end up totally out weighin the benefits. If I do look at goin down this line I\'ll be firing some questions your way if you don\'t mind.:wiggle

Ant, I\'m not looking at more than about 400 at the min as I\'ve never drove anything with more then 350 so don\'t want to out do myself. I\'m trying to look at this and be realistic so with that in mind it may not be worth doing. Didn\'t realise you could make 500 out of the REW. Might be worth sticking with this for a couple of years.

Thanks all for the advice, keep it coming it is appriciated.:yes

the manual will fit easily, just need to instal a pilot bearing, and get a small bracket to hold the stater motor as the auto starter motor mounts in front of the bell housing from the back.

What mods do you have on your car ATM?

Next to none. :2eek

then in that case nothing on your block will be worth fitting to the cosmo,  if its cheap then get it and stick it in your shed,  they are getting rare and will be an investment.  If you keep your car for a couple of years and get in to the rotary modifying scene,  slowly mod yours and go single turbo then you can use the new block.    or throw 8k at it and come away with a 600 monster

Ant-Think that mat be the best idea for the time beaing. I can\'t justfy letting the chance to buy it pass me buy.

I think I\'ll be very careful and make sure everythin I buy is changable onto the RE. The 600 break sounds amazing but I wouls kill myself in about 3.5 mins. I ain\'t got 8k hiding anywhere and couldn\'t justify a loan for something which gets used on weekends.

Think I\'ll keep researching this and come see some of you guys who have been there for some thoughts on it.

I do def want more power now I\'m use to what I\'ve got so will be tuning the RX just want to make sure I get it right 1st time.

Thanks for the response half expected to get :flamed at the 1st hurdle.

Best check the year of this Cosmo as stated before on earlier models the engine mounting points are on the center iron, the later Cosmo RE lumps had the tappings on the rear which make the conversion do-able, there is quite a bit of fab work required you will need a spacer block milled out so that you can use the REW throttle body with the RE UIM and to give you more clearance you need to reduce the LIM by about 25-30mm and you will need a different 2ndary injector rail as well as a few other bits, the REW loom is fine, what costs is the rebuild and the ancilaries to make it a safe powerfull engine. As Ant has said if you are looking at 400atw you can do this with the REW and save yourself all the hassel.
