Title: Symptoms Of Engine Failure
Post by: Teighto on June 27, 2007, 03:54:12 PM
Just wondered if their is a way of telling if the engine is on its way out, or is it just a sudden death ???

i.e does it loose boost, make weird noises ect ??

just for future reference thats all :)  All things fine at the Moment :D

The main thing that fails first is the water seals. You will start to loose water constantly from the expansion tank. If your luck enough for this to not happen and the engine is stock, it will eventually start to loose power untill it gets beaten by an escort rs turbo. This could be 100,000 or 200,000 miles. It could throw a tip, but less likeley on a stock untuned engine.

Smoke, poor startup hot and then cold, lumpy idle (ie. firing on one rotor) are a couple of ways.

Its cheaper to get a compression test and if its showing low results get it rebuild before the car poops something around its engine and wrecks alot of components :(

Ok,

Mine is Pretty Much stock, its got a diff back box and some K&N type filters induction cones, it also has an apexi PFC fitted,

starts from cold or hot.

it doesnt have lumpy idle but when i start it or when i come to a stop the revs will go to 1k then after 10-15 secs go to 850-900rpm and idle normally

does this sound like a problem ??

also where would the best place to get a compression test done ??

any recommendations around the southmapton area ?

Sounds like a problem on the idle control valve? (Assuming the FD\'s have a similar lay out to the FC - been over a year since I last played with an FD lump)

If youve only just bought it, take a trip up the A34 and stop of at Hayward\'s  Get Carl to do a once over on the car and he can tell you whats good and whats bad about it.  You can then decide whether you want to leave it standard or come and join me at Castle Combe for a few rounds??

Is there lots of mayonaise in the oil filler?

This can be an indication of water seal failure too.

Your closest RX7 specialist is Re-Worx in pompy, and they should be able to give her a health check to put your mind at ease.
