Hi,

My name is Dan, and the RX7 FD is my dream car.  Tomorrow I will be 21 and purchasing my first RX7.  Now I want to know what to look for and what to expect.  What is the best oil to use for the engine and is the higher octane petrol better for use.
Thanks
Dan

Howdy fella, welcome aboard!

All I can say is sit back and read up on as much as you can before you make the big decision.  Posting that kind of question and then buying tomorrow may be a little on the fast side.  :)

Search on this forum, as there are plenty of newby questions and stickies to help you.  Im sure the oil question has been covered plenty too.

Buy from a specialsit or a member where possible.  Get a rotary compression test if you can, and dont just jump into it.  Think with your head not your heart.

Right then im off me soapbox, lol

Chris:)

Welcome

The above is a good start.

I trust you\'ve sorted an insurance quote out - at 21 I don\'t envy you.

A lot will depend on budget and which model you\'re going after.

Seek advice from the many ppl on here who will gladly help.

John

Good choice!  It\'s quite likely that if you\'ve got a questions, it\'s been answered before.  There are plenty of threads and posts on the forum from young rx owners (me being one of them!).  Get searching through all the old threads and do plenty of research!

If you still have questions, post away!

Best of luck with the search :D

Regards
Chris

Answers:

Oil: I\'ve been told castrol GTX 10/40 mineral is about as good as anything else. It\'s what I use.

Fuel: Put as high octane as you can find. I have always used Tesco\'s 99ron, no problems at all.

Please do bear in mind that a pretty high percentage of guys your age don\'t have FD\'s for long... they either run out of funds or wreck them.

They are an expensive car to run, probably one of the most expensive in the price range.

Good luck and enjoy it safely if you buy one!

I know the car is heavy on petrol, just how heavy, what is the viability to have the Rex as my main daily car

How deep are your pockets - running an Rx7 is no dofferent to running any other high performance coupe, you need to be dedicated to checking everything 3 or 4 times a week, and you need to be prepared for the car to cost you £££ in fuel every month if you use it daily. On an average month, travelling less than 1000miles I used to spend around £300 on fuel in my rex, if you have a heavy foot it will be more!   Its worth every penny though! :Giggle

As Brett has said, hey are expensive to run.

I did a 250 mile round trip last weekend mostly cruising at motorway speeds and it cost me £60.

Around town you can expect much less miles or if your right foot is a bit heavy the figure will also plummet.

well ill do about 50miles a week, not gonna drive it to uni because it would get damaged or stolen. so looks promising.  My current car is pants for petrol.  Drove to santa pod on sunday, full tank started when i got there had 1/4 left and i dont have a heavy foot so tbh its not gonna be that much of a increase in petrol.  Saw some nice rex\'s there and spoke to the guys from mazdarotaryclub

Gotta be careful when buying one of these mate. If it\'s been neglected it won\'t be long before it goes BANG! and your wallet becomes very light for a long long time. Check on the forum for tips on what to look out for and check where the engine was rebuilt.

Good to see another Midlander! :cheers

Good luck with the car hunting etc.

I have used mine as a daily driver - Anything up from 16mpg for me when commuting and overall on a tank I get 20+ mpg, although I usually drive like grandma! :Giggle

Just noticed your from dudley. Have you found an fd yet? I would get an insurance quote first bud. At 21 they\'re gonna ask you to bend over. Expect to pay over £1500 with ncb and clean licence. This is a group 20 car
