Post by: antnicuk on June 21, 2007, 10:52:41 AM
Has anyone done this, is it just a bolt on?  do i need to do anything to the wiring?

Is this to power your electric Saxo PS pump then ?

my warning lights on the dash glow as i rev hard and have done so for a while but things seem ok other than that.

The reason i need a bigger alternator is because i am going to fit an electric fan and i think i am already at the limits of the stock alt, the leccy pas, 2 fuel pumps and water injection are all extra draw, the leccy fan i am fitting is 4400 cfm so is going to have a lot draw.

I suppose you could always cut the fan power whenever the pas is working :D  - serious possibility though.

I am looking to put a big 16" Volvo fan on my rad - it\'s cabled up with some big old wires - not sure on CFM or current draw - suppose I should measure the latter - but I\'m running mine off the piggy back and off a thermo switch in the upper rad pipe as a failsafe, so it won\'t be running all the time.

Apart from the PAS, and one less fuel pump, I have similar loads to you but have not seen any sign that voltages are dropping.  I get a healthy 13v+ even with the lights on at idle.

i suppose i should check the voltage at idle with all the gadgets on and take it from there,   what should i see with the lights. pas and fan on?

I assume i measure it from the post on the top of the alt.

I suppose anything above 12V on full load is good, below 12V and you\'ve got worries :eek

well i got the fan fitted although not wired in properly.  I ran the car upto 92 degrees and switched the fan on low speed and it took 90 seconds to bring the temp down to 80, did it again and switched it on to hih speed and it took 70 seconds to bring it down so well happ with that as its not cold at the moment.

I tried fitting a electric fan a couple of years ago when i first rebuilt the engine but it took ages to bring the temps down. That was with a 16 inch high power kenlowe,   this time i got a fan from america that was fitted to a Lincoln Mark 8 and is supposedly rated to 4400cfm, with two speeds. Its a beast and comes with its own faring. It took a little bit of trimming but is virtually the same shape as the FC rad.

Need to sort out the wiring with 2 temp switches and then change the alternator.

sounds good - are you going to Japshow this weekend? - if so I wouldn\'t mind a nosey at what you\'ve done - I haven\'t fitted any of the wiring up yet - I didn\'t want to chance it before Japshow - but I am going to get it all done in the next week or two - weather permitting - it\'s all pre done waiting to go in :)

Cheers,

Dave.
