Title: bringing 72 Mazda over
Post by: 2smoke on June 17, 2007, 11:50:06 PM
Hi - I live in NZ and am currently doing a ground-up rebuild on a 1972 Mazda 1800 estate.  It\'s down to the shell, bead blasted and in primer. I\'m waiting \'til I get some money to go to the next stage. It has been modified to take a 13b motor and gearbox.
My question is, if I come back to the uk to live, how hard would it be to get this car on the road?  It currently has no registration (the NZ expired cos it\'s been off the road for years).  The mods for the motor will be NZ approved.  Would it need to be re-certified again in the UK?

no its over ten years old, you wont need to do anything besides take it to an MOT station (roadworthyness test) get it insured and then simply buy road tax,

do you have any pics of it?

Thanks.  Any issues getting a registration?

Here\'s a rear view shot of the car when I bought it.

This is a restored saloon in Oz.  It\'s the same front end, I\'m using it as reference for the look I want to achieve.  Original trim, Arctic white, 18" ROH\'s.

the best people to speak to would be someone involved with the hotrod scene in the UK, it is quite common to import cars from all over the "rust free" areas of the world.  I think it has become quite a bit more complicated recently, if it is a personal import though it may be very straight forward.

No registration shouldn\'t be too much of an issue. Provided you have the following:

1) You\'ll need to present the DVLA (the body that issues your road tax) with the customs forms from importing the vehicle to prove duty has been payed. 2) You\'ll also need the car\'s original log book (do you have this?)
3) A lot of patience (I\'ve been through the process without 1) and 2) and believe me, if you dont have these, you will be dealing with some of humankind\'s most basic members :Hammer . If you\'re lucky you might find someone with a brain to help)

Its then a matter of restoring the car, getting the MOT sorted, and going back to the DVLA to get your tax disc and reg which provided you have 1) and 2), should be easy. It costs a few quid to get some of the paperwork sorted but is not much. And you\'ll be tax exempt (i think!) which is good.

First thing to do is call DVLA (0870 240 0010) to confirm what you\'ll need.

Good luck!

"log book" means a registration certificate.
"tax exempt" means you wont have to pay for an annual road licence.
You will need an annual roadworthy, and insurance (C urrently insurance on the RX-2 is £80/year)
