Title: New Fuel tank
Post by: AtomicRex on June 12, 2007, 08:09:25 AM
Seeing as though we are, at the moment, only running in short 20 minute races there seemed little point in running with a heavy 75 litre tank....so we\'ve opted for a new 45 litre space saver from ATL.  It weighs absolutely nothing....has a central collector pot, so fills on all aspects of motion (Acceleration, braking and cornering)....Its fully foam filled, and has all the dash fittings already attached.

My original idea was to put a new cell underneath the car, thus keeping the CofG down, but due to the guard around the exhaust, the tank would need to be offset.  Also I\'m intending to flat bottom the floor, and design a new rear diffuser, so being able to capitalise on the space would give a far better effect.

The old system....which works well, Brunswick put it in as a copy of their own car, uses a secondary pick up (on the exhaust side), then with 2 facet pumps feeding a swirl pot, this reduces the problem of slosh....however now with the cell completely foam filled, the chances are a lot lower.

Also with 2 chicanes at Combe the fuel, albeit only 25 litres, has to change direction quite violently and in quick succession, this throws the handling off, and could be an explanation as to why the back end is starting to become unsettled only in the chicanes and not in the other corners.

So........

Fitting was rather straight forward.

We cut a big hole in the wheel well, got rid of the sharp bits, and sprayed the exposed metal.  Forgot to mention, already removed the old tank ;)

Stick new cell in, then used one of the straps from the existing tank to hold the new one in place.  The Riv nut gun came in great use once again!!!  A must in a persons tool kit...even impressed Tony when he came to visit :p

Cut the new hoses to length and fit the -6 / -8 fittings...wire up the pumps, and jobs a good\'un

Taking it out to the Ring as is, but will have to make a new fire wall before the next race...just needed to wait to get a filler neck, otherwise the firewall fouls against the dash fittings.

I think it fits quite well, and although 45 litres sounds a little low, will give between 50 and 80 miles on track, and if I take it out on the main road....should be 140 miles.  Should be able to find a Shell station in that time ;)

Big thanks to Rog, for helping to fit it all in.....but more importantly not losing the plot with me when trying to fathom out the pipe runs!!! :D

Very interesting. The other tank is for the water injection?
After helping out that weekend I went and bought the biggest Rivnut gun I could find!

It is the water injection tank......

Now bow down to the god of rivnut guns!  Should be the only tool in the box!  Well other than a drill to make the hole first ;)

Actually I used to tell people it was the fuel tank, and that being a 1.3 it was very economical!  If only they knew!
