hey guys ive been looking at many examples of rx7s for sale. there seem to be a few for sale on pistonheads at between the £2000-3000 mark.
what im wondering is, would buying a car in this price bracket be worth buying? im aware that its been known for the odd rx7 to require a rebuild but if i was buying the car cheap and budgeting that it will need a rebuild, do you think it would be worth it in the long run?
the way i was thinking about it was i would then have the choice over who i had rebuild the engine and to what specification. plus i would be responsible for running it in properly and would be driving it with essentially zero miles since rebuild
but on the other hand, is it going to be too much hassle? are there likely to be ongoing problems i\'ll be faced with, outside of the normal problems im talking here. people always say \'you\'ll never regret buying a mint car\'
if i was to buy a rx7 it wouldnt be used as a daily driver and i have the time and space to keep it off the road whenever its not being used/broke, so im really just looking for advice off you guys who already own the cars, or who have went down the road of buying a non runner and fixing it up.
thanking you in advance,
bob :WaveBye
welcome to site m8
buying one thats not had a rebuild can be abit dodgy but then again buying one with one thats had a clean bill of health can also go wrong(happened to a few guys on here).
if you can theres a place in glasgow called the garage and if u did intend to buy one maybe see if mark(boss)would check it over for you.
i got mine cheap as the bloke thought it needed a rebuild(dodgy garage said it did) but turned out to be a very good engine.
so best thing is take your time and if ur p for abit of a rebuild then take the chance if not then id go for one thats just had one and not had much milage on it.
hope this helps and hope to see you on the 22nd july at crail where most of us scots rex owners should be
Hi
I looked on piston heads and in auto trader and around importers for about six months until i found a real gem of a car which owner had looked after ,still had to spend some money to get to a spec that i liked, but i spent more money but feel it was worth it,as my car almost like new now,in original spec.So get looking for a nice rare untouched model.
Good Luck.:)
If you can find a dirt cheap car that already has a blown engine or suspected near-engine failure, and then budget in for a rebuild from the start, you could end up saving yourself some big bucks. I cant see any reason why a car you rebuild yourself (or pay someone to do) would have any more problems than if you just buy a mint car in the first place, and like you say you get a little more say in the spec to suit you.
I bought an rx with what was supposed to be a rebuilt engine, so I paid a premium, guess what, it blew up in a little over 3 weeks. But once I paid to have it rebuilt, the car was absolutely perfect, never had a single fault (until I crashed it into some armco)
At least if you buy one that you think will blow up soon, you will never be disappointed, and may even get a suprising amount of life out of it! :)

thats exactly what i was thinking. i wouldnt want to pay for a supposed \'mint car\' with rebuild and everything then it dies anyway, then have to get it rebuilt again. plus if i get the car cheap enough i wont be gutted when it does go bang because i have budgeted for it
cheers for the info guys, and the welcome! it gives me something to think about. i still have to paint my s13 and get it back on the road before i can sell it on though.
one other thing. ive never driven, or even sat inside a rx7. they look quite small! im 6\'5". is it gonna be too small inside for me? the closest thing ive driven to a rx7 was a mx5 and it was waaaaay too small for me! the roof was too low, and my knee got trapped between the steering wheel and the doorcard!
and mikey on 22nd july wont everyone be at JAE? i know thats where i\'ll be anyway :)
bob
6\'5"?! You are gonna have trouble. There are some tall people on here who have modified the seat rails to slide the seat further back but I\'m not sure any of them are quite that tall!
What\'s your s13 like? i drive one at the moment, until I can afford another RX!
the s13 is fine for driving. its a bit bigger than a rx7. usually find leg room\'s no bother, but head room suffers
hmm, i may need to get a look inside one methinks!
bob
im 6`2 and I just fit comfortably, at 6`5 u`ll really struggle I think, u`ll need to modify the rails and buy a smaller diameter aftermarket steering wheel at least.
oh and back on the topic, I bought my white fd for £5,000, and its mint, had a few nice modifications too, but was pretty much standard. Interior and exterior are in top condition and the engine is absolutely perfect. I`ve not had any problems with her at all really, she`s been the most reliable jap car ive ever owned and ive had a few.
She had been rebuilt by WGT 15k miles ago, so got plenty of life in the engine too.
If you ask me, buying a cheap 2-3k car, you`ll probably get a dog which hasnt been looked after, the bodywork and interior will be shabby and there is a lot which can go wrong on cars, not just the engine (electrics, diffs, drivetrain, suspension etc etc).
Try and get a standard-ish car with a rebuild from a GOOD rx7 specialist, you may pay an extra 2-3k, but u`ll have a car which is mint from the start.
It doesn\'t seem to make any difference these days what condition the car is in, although I say it myself my car is in very good condition, and when I tried to sell it earlier this year, I got precisely zero interest.
Mint original bodywork, 8 years of careful ownership, very tasteful and expensive mods counted for nothing. It seems to me that no recent rebuild equals no sale !
Well I for one will not rebuild the engine just to sell the car, I would rag it round a track until it dies before I do that.
In conclusion I would say judge each car on it\'s merit, get it checked by a specialist such as Rotechniks and not get hung up about rebuilds.
