OK, before I get flamed, I know that this a bit of an un-answerable question, but I would appreciate some opinions, especially from people that have owned any of the cars.
I am looking at spending about 6.5k on a new car but I can\'t decide what to go for.
The options are:
RX-7 obviously
Nissan Skyline GT3R
Mitsi Evo 4
Alfa GTV V6 (the"safe" bet?)
I know these cars are all different and I love the RX-7 above all but is it realistic to think I can get an everyday driver for this money?
Any comments on running cost for the above would also be welcomed.
a standard RX7 could be a daily driver, and £6k would get you a very good stanard one. A modded one would cost about that for a good one, but the running and maintenance costs would be high. (well, higher than a standard spec one)... when they go in for work, they generally need several days for work to be carried out, so a bit annoying if its your only car.
Similar for Skyline... could get a good standard GTS-t for that, but you won\'t get a GTR for £6k... not one that would last a week anyway... ;)
Not sure about early Evos, but cos they\'re all electronic, they generally cost more when things go wrong.
dunno about Alfas, but I thought they used to be pretty flakey.
that\'s about the extent of my limited kowledge.. :rollin
Here\'s one of many in the forsale section http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38009 (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38009)
There\'s no certainty with any second hand motor and it depends what you are after stockish as in the example i\'ve pasted or modified cars of which there are also plenty in that section.

If you want a dependable daily driver that you have to rely on my personal opinion would be to look at the cars that go for a price where you can get one of the best ones. I\'d say 6.5k would get you an average to good standard Rx7 with a rebuild, but still around 15yrs old so will never be bullet proof. Same with the other ones you mention, except the GTR which you wont get for that price. I run a cheap daily drive as well so I don\'t have to use the rex as a daily drive, I\'ve found the money and stress it saves is more than worth the money. Esp as cheap second hand cars can be got for next to nothing these days.
I have not really considered getting a second car. Problem with that is I am sure I would end up driving the Rex everyday.
After all, my drive to work has some nice, fun roads and I reckon I would spend the whole time thinking how much fun it would be if I was in the car I left at home :)
That black one is drool worthy. I prefer the stock look and I am not too bothered about mods as I am sure a standard Rex will be a handful until I get used to it.
Obviously the lack of an engine rebuild is a slight concern, but I guess a compression test will easy my mind a bit.
I might have to get off my ass and visit RX Motors. They are only 15 mins from me and they may be able to give me some impartial advice.
you cn have mine fer 6.5k :) off to wgt on monday for remap n comp test so whoever buys her has some reasurance shes all good, was rebuilt in japan but no paperwork to prove it bud, engines pretty standard, just the exteriors not lol..
Try n be a bit more help lol...
RX-7 The best car you will own n drive by far..
Nissan Skyline Nice cars but i wasnt that impressed we it to be honest, didnt feel anything special..
Mitsi Evo 4 nice cars again like the skyline nothing special in my view
Alfa GTV V6 (the"safe" bet?) m8 has one of these, and says he loves it but would never buy another lol.. rex is more reliable lol
Depends what your after bud.. the loonacy of a rx7 :yes or a easy to drive at its limits car.. i.e in my view the skyline/evo.. felt it was a boring drive because it does everything to perfect if you know what i mean?
cheers
give me a call 07737 257 377.

Oh, I forgot to mention. I saw a red and a black RX7 in convoy going through Shaftesbury the other day.
A very pleasant sight on my commute home :).
Where abouts in Dorset are you matey,
Cheers Bob
I live in Blandford Forum, what about you ro284?
Christchurch, mate but i go through Blandford every day next week, working in hazelbury bryan. have a silver type X with all the extras, if you want to see one close up perhaps we could arrange something,by the way i have seen a black one FD just on the other side of child okeford, but i dont think the owner is on here,
cheers Bob
RX7 = Not Reliable
QuoteRX7 = Not Reliable
Disagree, never had any problems with mine since rebuild 12k ago, 30 months ago, it does not pop bang fart, never flooded, and doesnt smell of petrol, one of the most relable cars you can get for the age no rust either,
Bob

only if its owned by a money or was owned by a monkey.
if you maintain it like a proper sports or supercar which isnt exactly expensive it has no reason to go wrong. and tbh most people use them 3k year to 6k a year so that 10-20 years in my eyes.
oil n filter change every 2000miles youl be fine :) if you upgrade fer reliabilty there great cars n reliable..
I have an 95 bathurst FD with brand new rebuild by Rotary Imports with warranty for £7k.
Is stock except cat back, apexi ecu, turbo timer and panel filter.
see below for link.
YOu could import a mint or highly modified 2nd gen Rx7 for that sort of money - £6500 would probably get you a 350bhp FC from Japan ;)
Join the FC side - you know you want to.....:Giggle
I know someone sellng ablack turbo 2 fc with a v8 engine in £850, or without engine £650. Bodywork could do with a good polish or blowover but chassis is mint as it\'s on stands. I had a good look underneath
QuoteI know someone sellng ablack turbo 2 fc with a v8 engine in £850
Get in the corner :flamed
Actually im wrong, it\'s an old v6 ford engine. It looks like it\'s been stole from a museum lol. My mates interested in buying it for a track car, obviously putting the 13b 2616cc motor in.
I wouldnt use an RX as a daily driver, I\'d get a honda... oh yeah I did :Thumbsup!
DC2 Type R daily drive and the \'beast\' as a toy
You can get a GTR for £6500 easily but will be the R32 GTR revision not the bigger R33 GTR and deffo not the R34 GTR

I gotta agree with this statement. Probably the most reliable car I have owned!
Thanks for all your comments.
What time do you come through Blandford ro284?
I have seen several FDs about. One often parks near me, it has a headlight conversion (looks like a four eyed frog) but the body work is pretty tatty.
I also saw a nice shiny black one go through a few weeks back.
I have considered Honda\'s but they seam really expensive for what you get, especially the Integra\'s.
An FC..... not really my thing. It is the look of the FD that has really grabbed me. However if it had a V8 in I would seriously have to think about it :)
Thanks for the offers for cars also. I have seen all of these advertised before (I have been keeping an eye on the market for a while) so if or when I decide to get an FD I may be in touch.
I have a really nice very low mileage silver 93 fd for sale, I am in bournemouth, so not far, full rebuild etc 5495.00,

Hey Chris, who rebuilt (is warranty transferable?) the engine and has it got any mods (lowered suspension perhaps)?
I take it it needs to be broken in?
Any more pics of interior?
Anything wrong with it?
QuoteHey Chris, who rebuilt (is warranty transferable?) the engine and has it got any mods (lowered suspension perhaps)?
I hope Chris rebuilt it mate, he did mine, and i was fortunate enough to watch a lot of it, very very Thorough! (worked for Maza and another top specialist) mine has done around 12K now, it\'s never missed a beat and is a fabulous drive, i have done like many RX7 owners and bought a new Apexi with comander, a huge downpipe, huge decat pipe and a repacked cat back, but i havent fitted any of it, the car is great as it is, so will probably sell all the bits on.
The Black one you saw with the quad headlights is the one that i know of and agree dont like the lights, flip ups are best IMHO. i go through Blandford around 10, come back around 6 or 7, but i\'m off sick at mo, hope to be ok by next week, i suggested having a look at one, because i know how difficult it was to do so when i was looking, but best bet would be to have a look at the one Chris has TBO, but don\'t hang around, good ones with a new rebuild are more sought after,
Cheers Bob

Hi,
The engine was built by myself, (ten years as a mazda mechanic, followed by 12 years of specialist rx7 work)
I take it it needs to be broken in?
It has not been run in yet and needs a 500 miles below 4000rpm (a good chance to get used to the forst turbo :)
Any more pics of interior?
I can get some more pics, but can assure you the interior is mint.
Anything wrong with it?
Asside from the right hand front wing having been painted.... not very well, it is a very very good example with genuine 39000 miles.

Rx7, words cannot describe the beauty! just look after it, and dont plan on having kids because theres no room for them in the back!!!!!
Skyline, dont know, sorry.
evo 4, some of the evo 4s get crank walk. This was the 1st 2.0l engine mitsibusi released, evo5s onwords are ok, but evos are all yaw rubbishy computer driven thingys, GET A PROPPER CAR!!!!
Alfas, renouned for electrical problems.

Damn and I was gonna try and sell you my Integra :D .. seriously
Would make the best daily drive and alot of car for the money imho.
Of the ones you\'ve listed its got be the RX7 - but you knew we\'d say that on a rotary forum right :yes They\'ll all break down and cost a fortune to run but the RX7 will be the most fun, unless you love driving in the rain. And, of course, it looks the best :InLove
Whatever you do don\'t get the alfa :Nono!

Hey Chris, what\'s a type S then? has the front splitter been ripped off or did it not come on that model?
What\'s the rest of the paintwork like?
Is the suspension adjustable?
Do you back your rebuilds up with any kind of warranty?
Why did the engine blow with only 39k on it?

Lol, no plans for kids. Infact a Rex might be a good deterrent :)

Hi
The a type S is the entry model, it has a couple of subtle differences from the type R. It is fitted with one oil cooler, no front splitter, no front strut brace and cloth seats, rather than alacantra (i prefer the look of the cloth seats)
Paintwork is in good cond throughout and suspension is not adjustable (although I have stock springs which can be fitted).
The reason for the engine rebuild is that it was fitted with a boost controller in Japan, the new uk owner lent the car to his brother, who decided to \'adjust the boost\' there was insufficient fuel for the boost, and she chipped an apex seal.
Come and have a look at the car and we can discuss all other points.
Chris
mines for sale :0)
Hmmm reliable hey... how many of you have had an engine rebuild then? I\'m not saying I don\'t love the RX but they are about as reliable as Del Boy after 5 cans of special brew.
Almost everyone on here has had an engine failure or some major problem. So much so that people feel the need to learn how to rebuild the engines themselves (due the frequency of strip down). Do you think they have posts on the GTR or SXOC\'s "How many people\'s engines have died after being rebuilt with less than 5000 miles"
Perhaps bone stock they are good for 60000 miles but lets be honest - it\'d be more sensible to buy an RX8 or 350Z as a daily driver backed by a nice dealer warranty rather than a 5-10 year old FD backed by a warranty that excludes this that or the other

Bit of a sweeping statement that? :( Out of the thousands of Rx7\'s only a very few have required multiple rebuilds and usually thats because of human error. Sorry to have a rant but I\'m getting pretty sick of the current rotary/rx7 bashing thats going on! :flamed
aye whoever says that they are unreliable blow up all the time is talking nonsense,. stop running stupid boost and you will have an engine that will last long, even as stock these cars are fast enough to kill you.
ive had mine a whole year and not had any major issues. yeah will probably need rebuilding one day, but any high peformance engine needs work now and then.
when a GTR engine blows up it costs twice as much as rotor to rebuild, best thing is a lot of people learn how to rebuild a rotor themselves.
quit bashin the rotor, its a VERY reliable car. no mine isnt for sale.

interestingly I have read some very scary stories on GTROC including one which went along the lines of: "my RB26 suffered catastrophic failure, cost me £12k to rebuild, lasted 1000 miles and the bottom end went, took it back to the engine builder they agreed to cover half the cost of another rebuild then about six months later it went again, now taken it to another builder and paid out another £10k but at last I\'m happy with the build!"
As far as my maths goes that means some poor sap has forked out over £28k to sort out his GTR! I think £3k (even if it has been done twice in a year) kind of pales into insignificance eh? Like everyone else has said, if looked after properly, there is no reason why an FD can\'t run happily for 6-8 years without any sort of rebuild required.
I think the reality is that due to the age of most of these cars, ( mines 14 now, ) The main reason the engines fail is not mechanical, but failed water seal grooves, i mean the cast iron plate water seal grooves that rust, and the reason being you never know how much or if any coolant corrosion nhibitor has been used in Japan before the car even gets here, the total miles on my car is only 62K which is not a lot! and it certainly suited me that the engine failed for the unfortunate previous owner, as i was able to get the car i wanted and afford a rebuild, and is one of the most reliable cars iv\'e ever had, getting a rebuild done when needed is best seen as an investment,
Bob
as has been said many many times before, regular service, say 1500-2000 miles with plugs, oil filters and a good oil, coolent change say every 6 months.. a good map to an apexi and these are more reliable than most other cars out there, as said above a skyline engine will cost around 7k to be rebuilt.. and im sure most will tell you that have rebuilt there own engines, its all part of the fun.. home builds cn range from 800 to 2000 depending on how bad n how many plates are needed, and im sure everyones close to a few members that will be more than willing to help cus everyone on heres genuin n top guys/gals :)
my 2p lol... flame me if ya want.. i know the dribble im sayings true :evillaugh
Well as an RX noob it is hard to get a good idea of how long an RX7 will last.
From what I have gathered from post on here, if you buy a rebuild it should last you 6-7 years, which is fine with me.
What I don\'t want is to buy a rebuilt one (obviously paying more) and then it blowing within a few years as that would be a big financial pain in the balls.

My initial thoughts on this are that I may be better off getting a type r (with an apexi)already fitted as I will no-doubt end up buying braces, Apexi and front splitter which will cost me a bit and may increase the insurance as they are mods.
Having twin coolers seems like a sensible option too.

And I can also recommend the cars that Chris sells, as thats where I got mine from in March. Drives like a dream :3gears-rh .
Price now £4995.00
Very very cheap for a low mileage rebuilt gem of a car.........
If you want trouble free FD ownership, she is definately the one, new clutch less than 5k ago, all switches, solenoids, coils, vac pipes etc, inspected and tested:Thumbsup! .....
By reliable I\'d look at how often it fails to start or gets you home on the back of a low-loader.
Happened with mine once on 4 years and 25k miles of ownership and that\'s from a split clutch line.
Even when the water selas were on the way out it still started and ran well.
Even when I blew a tip playing at high boost on a runway it managed to hit 164mph and drove home (and bashed a few Civic type R\'s in the process)...
Well maintained FDs are as reliable as any car, more so than (for example) an equivalently aged TVR.
