Title: overboosting possible causes?
Post by: scooby_si on January 24, 2004, 05:37:14 PM
didn\'t noticably do it initially on my journey back from collection but soon i noticed boost gauge (dual turbo timer gauge un which was supposed to be disconnected for SVA & there is a boost gauge anyway but the muppets appear to of unplugged the boost guage & left the TT/boost gauge plugged in & operational  )
Anyway wood happily read 1.25 hg/mm or sumin or other which as i recall is the same as bar which i no is a stupid amount for a car with only induction & back box as mods!
Anyway not been doing full throttle there after to avoid such occurancies but what are possible causes?
I no recall the "rats nest"/piping is often a big cause but it still would happily go OTT boost even from cold this morning....
Any other cunning plans or possibilities as my memory fails me but i have seen it mentioned many times before......
Cheers
Si

Hi Si,

I can\'t be bothered to find my conversion calculator dubri
but overboosting at this time of year in this kind of weather is quite normal a sthe air is so dense. I came back down the m3 the other week and everytime I hit the accelerator even only half way I was hitting 1bar of boost.

fair enough m8 although when i looked down & saw 1.25 at one point i thought it was likely to be sumin more awry? Either way if >1bar is not cunning with stock bits then i guess it\'s restraint time on my part.....

Thats odd ... mm HG  stands for millimeters of Mercury (HG is the symbol on the Periodic table for Mercury)

Normal Atmospheric pressure =  760mm HG

and 1 Bar = 1.013 Atmospheres

therefor 1 Bar is about 750 mm HG

Not sure what your guage is reading in though ? doesn\'t look to be reading correctly if it is really mm HG !

Probably is mmHg.  My Pulsar read in mmHg, as does the negative side of the guage in my FD.

i\'ll check what the reading was worded as i may of misquoted what it called it but plan is to hook the proper boost guage & remove the TT/guage.......but i\'ll check later what the story was but i think it was certainly a large portion of boost as i did, as i recall start to get fuel cut at 1 point which was partly what allerted me to this

Mod wise all it has from a power point of view is induction & back box, not sure of make dont look like any of the more obvious uns but hey i dunno (http://www.stupid-boy.com/smilies/contrib/dvv/sconf.gif) although Miguel didnt either..... Still struck me as silly levels of boost for no silly mods.......

doh yeah the previous measurement was just when -ve boost positive reads the square thingamies (yes i forgot again lol) but is bar thingy as i recall, so that being the case it does seem a silly level of boost for no reason so if this is a common occurance on even standard cars other than not giving the loud pedal a firm press whats best way to prevent it is a boost controller the way forward?
Si (dont wana have to keep looking at gauge to no when i need to stop pressing pedal i\'d rather have a proper controlled boost i can use)
