Title: Is this normal?
Post by: Tim_B on June 02, 2007, 07:02:22 PM
Well I have had my Rex about 4 months now and I still drive gingerley round the corners :2eek Just don\'t seem to have any confidence in it despite it never doing anything to worry me :3Confused

Was out in the integra earlier today and had a great rag around :driving  I noticed it was RX7 weather though.  So went out a bit later and drove the same roads again in my RX7.... only much slower :2eek

I looked down at my cornering speed at some points and noticed I was going about 10mph slower than I would be in the integra, plus I am pretty slow out the corners too - scared of putting the power on too soon :2Rolleyes

So my question - is this normal for a new owner?  and how long did it take you to be confident with your car?

It is my first rwd car btw and I have been in 3 crashes in 8 months (none with me driving), these may be conributory factors.  But still it is annoying me that I\'m so slow :2Mad

Get the suspension checked and the geometry 4 wheel laser aligned first of all, then see how you feel with her.

Please tell me you aren\'t driving on Jap rubber, they are awefull tyres.

Rears are UK, fronts are jap - I thought they were just **** in the wet, but not so bad in the dry.

Don\'t think there is anything wrong with the suspension, previous owner had 4 wheel alignment shortly before I got her.  Its more my confidence levels :o

my advice is mounts and suspension, even experienced rotaryheads had a scare!

set up is everything as i think the vast majority have thier car set up badly.

engine mounts and alignment are the big ones

You have to have a scare to make you a better driver, we all like to believe we are good drivers but you only learn from mistakes, take it easy until you get a good feel for the car, once you feel it you will be able to drive it better ;)

do a track/activity day and you will be amazed!!

i underestimated the car after 6 months of ownership.

changed my mind about power upgrades too as i found out that it really is enough for the moment for me :)

cannot reccomend it enough mate

Took me a lot to get proper confidence in the car - I still think im not 100% confident (maybe thats also a good thing)

I had laser alighned the car, replaced some bushes and fitted coilovers - It just inspires you - also as it handles better it seems that bit slower and more composed so you naturally carry more speed through!! :wiggle

Am planning to do an airfield day with Andy Walsh so that should help alot, done one before and it really helps :Thumbs-up

Dunno about coilovers, I have some fitted, which I think makes the car feel unsettled when I go over bumps.  Will get a geo set up at some point though - should help matters.

Guess its just gonna take (alot) more time to get used to it.

if you ask me mate this is a much better problem to have than being new to RWD cars and then being too cocky.

far too many rx7`s get smashed up because of this, especially in winter.

ive had a 400bhp mr2 turbo and believe me those things are scary, rx7`s are much much easier to handle, in the dry they can grip and go as good as anything. (oh and ive had a teggy type r too, the dc2, i`m not surprised you corner quicker in it, they inspire confidence...they really are fantastic cars, but not in the same league as the rx7 mate)

Trust the car, it wont let you down :)

No, but it might kill you.

Be careful

Don\'t push yourself

Or the car

It\'ll only end in tears.

If you want to race it, take it on track.

just scare the guy a bit more why dont you :2Rolleyes lol

I wasnt telling him to go racing around the streets, I was simply telling him to trust the car and enjoy driving it (just like he does with the integra)

I had all 4 wheel alignment done at my local garage and they told me it was a good as it will get. I still wasn\'t happy and took it round to Pip at WGT. He told me they had done a terrible job on it, realigned it again and it was a completly different car. Now I chicken out before the car gives up on me!

Same everyone else on this one! get a good setup, get some good rubber, and she will be very good in the dry! ( carry on as you were though in the damp and wet) thats when they become funny asses!

i am driving my FD3s now 10 days, ands its true..: i am a lot slower than in my turbo mx5.
my problem is the handling with the p/s, without it (in my mx) i got a much better feedback from my front tires

greetings Michael

Something that was said to me when I first got my Rex:
\'You\'ll find you\'re own limits before you find the cars\'
So true. Get some proper driving instruction. It makes the world of difference to your day to day driving. Its much more worthwhile than spending a couple of hundred squids on something shiny. I reckon I\'ve saved the costs several times over through better sympathy for the car and what the engine is doing. I did a couple of days with John Lyon and would highly recommend it. I want to go back and do some more time with him this summer. I would have gone back a lot earlier if I\'d had the cash.
