Title: New RX owner
Post by: h_kaz89 on May 31, 2007, 01:32:44 AM
Hi everyone.. new rx owner.. Been reading through the forum and great help. Been through some cars, mine and friends, but i must say the RX must be the best looking car. Dont know about performance, as i havnt driven mine yet as its in the garage. Just wanted to know if you got any advise. Ive been reading and its not a good car for a younge driver, and as im 18 i fall in that category. But ive been through a fair share of cars, and had experience with RWD cars. I got the car from a salvage, and was even hoping the previous owner is on this group, so i ask him about the car. Upgrades im doing to the car:

1) HKS Pro V Piggy Back
2) Trust Greddy Intercooler
3) HKS SSQV BOV
4) Blitz twin Air induction Kit
5) Upgraded AST
6) HKS Turbo Timer
7) Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, Water Temp and Boost Gagues.
8) Efini Center Wheel Caps
9) HKS Intercooler Pipes

Upgrades already made to the car:

1) Sports Exhaust
2) Suspension (Not 100% sure)

Any comments will be much appreciated, as i want to keep this car for some time, and what ive seen till now, RX7 owners are very helpful. You don\'t get the same help with other car owners. So im happy to be part of the club. Any things to watch out for? Any specialists in London i can go to?

Yes I know it looks bad, and i feel sorry for the person who had it for me, must of been hard loosing her, but in safe hands now, and most definatly going to be looked after. Its been in the garage all week and should be out by tuesday next week, all ready to be driven, and cant wait. Ill post pictures of her once shes finished. Its done 80,000km, so 50,000miles, what ive been told, its either reached its rebuild time and needs one, or it may have had one already. If any of you recognise the car, number plate, please message me letting me know anything you already know about her. If the owner is here, getting in contact with you will be great. The car was at santa pod, as the paper work was all in the car, and guessing either crashed their or on the way back.

Any ways thanks alot, and will be hoping for some advice/comments.

welcome to mazda rotary club and an interesting time of morning to join lol! the car still looks better than most cars out there! unfortunately there arent any specialist companies in london although hayward rotary arent too far away. a compression test would be the best way to check the health of the engine. where abouts in london do you live? i live near brent cross. and insurance is a b**tch! :)

hi and welcome
i think your a bit out of your depth at the age you are?? your asking for trouble!!!!
1, insurance, they are going rape your arss and it\'s going to be more than the cars worth

2, fuel, i hope you have deep pockets

3, if you mod it, you may never get insurance on it

4, it costs about 4k for a decent engine rebuild

sorry but this is reality:Grrr

Hi Kaz and welcome,

Good thing about the car is the wheels appear to be pointing all the same way so lets hope its superficial and that the salvage yard havent "adjusted" things to look good and get a sale !.

On the age side of things, I myself went through this many years ago.

For my 18th birthday I brought myself a 3.8 Jag and then paid more than double what I paid for the car in insurance !, but boy did I want that car and the sacrifice was more than worth it.

We have had several 20 year olds in the club over the years and maybe they can give advise to you on where to get insured.

Hope it all works out for you.

i\'ve had mine since my 19th im insured with crowthorne insurance services but they arent the best of companies just the only one that would quote. you need to pull some tricks out, perhaps with a cheap postcode, classic policy as you wont do many miles as you think unless you are really loaded in which case insurance wouldnt matter :rollin

get a woman on the policy that normally helps too. from the sounds of it, london and rx doesnt sound good mate i hate to say. its a group 20 car.

finallly also you may want to remove the number plate pic when your looking as insurance companies like to check forums from time to time.

good luck!

Best plan...get your Ards license and insure it with Competition Car insurance....you can then insure with the intention of doing some sprint racing!!  Mine was incredibly reduced and they don\'t quibble about modifications either!

Good luck with the rebuild!

If you are worried about the straightness of the vehicle....get it jigged, SGH at the bottom of my sig will do that....bit of a journey, but as I\'ve found its a bugger to set up if it isn\'t straight!

Don\'t bother with the Turbo timer....big waste of money in my opinion!  There is bugger all oil pressure at idle, so the better idea is lift off the throttle and let everything cool down, the turbo timer doesn\'t let your brakes cool down and they need too just as much as the engine/turbo.

Have fun, and stay away from wet roundabouts...especially if you suspect diesel ;)

I\'m 19, my insurance with 0 NCB and all mods declared is 3880 /year. (Month to month basis), with me as the only driver, 8k mileage /year. I know its a lot of money, but my car is 100 times more kitted than yours atm :P

Try Budget Car insurance. Also, if your 19th is soon, wait until then, it makes it 100 times cheaper. Last year it cost me 4800 as a second driver using my dads 6year + NCB. Just because I was 18 I think...

Would be worth waiting a little while :)

i live at 2mins from dollis hill station,5mins from willesden green! hayward rotary would do the compression test for 25 pounds,5% discount when a full member i believe! well there is a place called sureterm that has insured a guy on the club for under 1000,but the catch is you must have be 1st driver in another vehicle. so i got a micra that im fully comp on for under a G and when im 21 will get a policy with sureterm so i wont have to pay too much hopefully!

Hi, thanks for all the help. I was thinking of getting a traders policy, as they work on what the log book states for engine size, therefore i will be insured for a 1.3 and not 2.6/2.8. With traders aswell i can drive any other car i want, even if i take third party. Not 100% if i can get it as their are rules and regs, but i buy and sell cars so hopefully i fit in. If not, im screwed.
Any ideas on compression places in london?
Oh and the wheels are fine.. the damage hasnt reached the wheel. It looks worse than it is. Its nearly all done, going to be out of the garage by tuesday. Any of you know who used to own the car? Or anyone knows how i can find out?

Just south of Newbury.

Alternatively, try a Mazda dealer who are used to servicing RX8\'s (and have a rotary compression tester to). Although alot more expensive than Haywards to do the test, and not nearly as much fun to drive to!!:D

There is an insurance part to the mrc site - have a look in there, if you haven\'t already.

Hi Kaz,

I can\'t criticise you for wanting a performance car at a young age, I\'ve been paying stupid premimums since I was 18 due to my car choices.

If you want my advise, it looks pretty stock at the moment (less the prang )as does the engine from what you\'ve described. There aren\'t many around anymore like this, keep it like that, it\'s plenty fast enough compared to pretty much what any other 18 yr old will be driving. This will keep your premiums down and will also help your resids for the future.

Sorry if that\'s boring, but like many of us on here, I\'ve shelled out loads over the years and looking back was it worth it? Yeh probably :Giggle

Solution = Drive without insurance, you are all a bunch of scallywags! 4k insurance for one car alone! Although £3880 is not a bad quote lol. What a waste though as 4k can buy you another car!

I wouldnt dare mention any thing to do with racing to an insurance company. I got told insurance company\'s dont like people with ARKS or ARDS licences.

Im a very careful driver....I never race on the road...thats what the track is for....you ask the guys from the cheddar run ;)

I\'ve never know insurance to be a problem with an ARDS licence, and I\'ve got two! one for racing and one for instructing.
3/4k for insurance is bonkers though.

I know this isnt the right way to go about things, and its probably not very..erm..honest.

But I would seriously consider registering the car in your mum or dads name, and pay whatever the insurance is (say £500 - £600).

Then buy another car for yourself, a little run around..and insure it fully comprehensive with a company which lets you drive other cars TPFT. Then you can drive the RX7 legally. It`ll probably cost you around £1,500 ish for both premiums depending on the run around.

Obviously once you turn 21, you`ll have some NCB and you can insure the RX7 yourself.

(Oh by the way I dont know the insurance loopholes and clauses, I know that I can drive any other car TPFT on my policy, but i`m not sure if your restricted to cars of the same engine size and lower etc..it was just an idea lol)

hi mate, yeah if its ready by tuesday, i will bring it to ace. If i dont come with that, i might be around with a black mr2 turbo or a crx (friends cars). Them two are killing me, keep on ****ing me off about how my engine can blow any second. Just waiting for it to come out of the garage so i shut them up.

Getting your ARDS license is fine....piece of cake, along as you can remember flag signals, pass a medical, and prove to an instructor that you can drive!  Cost is about £200, but worth every penny!

As for the insurance idea of getting your mum and dad to insure.....there was a guy local to us that was refused his insurance claim, because it they had proof he was driving it regularly.

The insurance company know about such things....and you really should be careful posting things on here as I\'m sure the insurance companies read these forums!

I know they are getting very hot on this at the moment and fewer companies are offering this service, and those that do are charging higher premiums for the privelege for exactly the reason stated above.
Its up to you but do remember that doing this your RX will only be insured at the minimum required cover ie THIRD PARTY ONLY, no fire or theft cover.

Welcome to the Club bud - good luck with the RX. Certainly dont be put off by the mechanical side of things they are v easy to work on - alot of people say they are rather specialist but iv been working on them since i was 14/15

But if im honest i think your a nutter paying silly insurance prices - i simply couldnt justify paying those sort of prices for a raod car - iv grown up around rx7s and would love to jump into one but my god im not being ripped off on insurance!

And i notice you mentioned traders policy you may well struggle on that at 18 - i looked at going onto our company policy and i can go on for nowt , can drive anycar within reason for business use BUT for personal use im restricted to a 1.2 at 17 , then 1.4/1.6 at 18 then im free pretty much for personal use at 19/20. Also premiums are high. Something to bare in mind.

Anyway good luck bud - look forward to seeing progress pics

lol thanks for advice olly-civic but ive dugged deep enough in my wallet to go and break it now.
Gord about traders, my friend just got his policy and hes 18, hes restricted on 1.3 but traders insurance goes on the log book engine size and not anything else, and im luky enough to have it as a 1.3 :D.. Going to add my self to his policy, as he happens to be ma cuzn..
Darko shame i didnt see you man.. was their in a micra and mr2.. The micra was the blue one that went in the middle of the round about and embarresed it self with the attempted burn out. My mate was driving and he burnt the clutch, and now its slipping.. Nyc to see you around north west some were.. Maybe you can have a look at the car and tell me what you think. Its going to be out on thursday hopefully, unless the garage delays again. I was their today fitting my induction kit and dump valve. Dont know why but took me 4hrs.. is that normal? because ive done it to mr2s and take like 40mins..

This is my first post ever on this site although I have learned alot over the past year of looking through various threads on this site, so thanks everyone.

Kaz have you tried a company called greenlight?  www.greenlightinsurance.com (http://www.greenlightinsurance.com/index.php?Referrer=BangorCruise) or call 01277 263030.

They quoted me £900 for mine with 1 year NC, but I do have access to other cars and I am limited to 6K miles, but all mods are declared.  My car is currently in the garange and will stay there till 24th October :( Then I\'ll have 2 years NCB and the cost will be £810 for the year.  I know this might seem alot to some of you but I live in NI and no one over here will touch a modded car with over 200 bhp (yes I know its 280bhp, 93 type R Jap import).

Current Mods
Tein adjustable springs on the car
Full C West Aero Body Kit on the car
Aero GT carbon rear wing on the car
HKS induction Kit sitting in a box in the boot
Blitz BOV sitting in the same box in the boot
And 18" Alloys (not purchased yet as I am very poor at the mo)

First years excess is high £550 but this will drop to £350 next year.

Roll on the 24th Oct :)

They only went 280 in 99 when they revised there turbo\'s and the UK cars were 235bhp not 255bhp.

Lol, i\'ve seen worse spelling of Japanese.

All JDM RX-7\'s upto 1996 were 255bhp mate.  It was only the 99 onwards that were 280bhp.

They misslead me :( the lots of bad words.

To be honest doesn\'t matter much as its quicker and more powerful than I had expected.  Driven cars with more hp but they didn\'t seen to accelerate as well as the Rx7

Only been out in it once since buying it and got temp insurance for a day (well my mum did) to take it my parents house to go into storage (My house doesn\'t have a garage) and I\'m not going to be insured untill the 24th Oct.  Can\'t wait.
