Right heres the situation, me and my mate have been mega into cars now since we where 16, now were just in a position to start getting the funds together for our prospective cars me (RX7 obviously) and he has decided he want a Evo vi now I’m a bit worried! i\'m wondering how they compare on the track? i will be looking for an rx7 with mild mods straight through, power fc, etc and hopefully getting a modest 250rwhp? how will i fair.
PS i know alot more about fd\'s than he knows about evos but our general knowledge about cars is the same.
neil
on a bone dry day u might stay with him but anything else and he will whup u..the evos are all wheel drive have anti yaw control and with just a few mods can seafely run 350bhp and about the same torque all day every day
the rex looks better and is impressive but cant match the tech wizadry of the evo
umm well, his evo vi will roughly cost 3 grand more than a good rex so ill be able to throw that into it maybe a racelogic tc system might even things up! i wont want to spend money on the engine as it doesnt follow the master plan :evillaugh :evillaugh :evillaugh
I have owned both. I hate AYC, the pumps go and then the diff which will cost you many £££ (the diffs are £2000 alone) if your gonna get one, get an RS sprint with no AYC they are the ultimate. I did a track day at Brands in my 6, it felt underpowered, too under steery and the brakes were rubbish. On the road its a different matter, a serious point to point weapon, it would dispatch roads so quickly you harldy knew what was going on. Its such a completely different car to the FD its very hard to compare them to be honest.
also a lot depends on driver skill, dont matter if you have 1000BHP and the best handling car in the world if you dont know you braking points and you corner position you\'ll get beaten every time
As for which is better?, they are like chalk and cheese, the RX is a track car whereas the mitsi is designed for rally stages
Here\'s my friends cars.

Evo is trouble free reliable power. (yes I know its a IX)
FD was a maintenace nightmare for him, now sold.
He misses the FD though because it was more raw and needed a driver,
He says the EVo is just a mechanical marvel and makes him look better than he is.
Check out more pics on his site http://www.fooboy.net/Aaron/Cars/index.html
Russ.
We beat the times of the Evos round Combe in our Rex Admittedly we are on slicks and they are on road tyres...I say road tyres, they are as close to a slick whilst remaining road legal
However the Evo\'s are 500bhp....and we are 4 seconds a lap quicker!
as a road car the evo will be hard to stay with let alone beat they are just too good straight out of the box
i had the equiv impreza the p1 ad had it modded running 350bhp and 330 foot pounds and wet or dry u could plant it in any direction and thats the way it went sheer power/great brakes/great suspension etc the 7 looks better but just cant match these cars as road cars and in the damp u will soon be doing the wild thing
There must be a lot of very poorly set up Fd\'s out there!!
Ive had Imprezas etc (well my wife has cos lets face it all 4 wheel drive cars are gay) all well modified, classic and new age, prodrive etc.. I have driven other peoples Evos too and it amazes me when people say these types of cars will out handle an FD. Any muppet can drive a womans car fast, the rex rewards good driving it does not mask poor driving very well. It\'s one of the best rear drive cars I have had in the wet too. A wet and bumpy back road would favour the Evo but there would not be much in it even then in my opinion.
I have owned an Evo IV and just bought myself a VI Tommi Mak as I missed evo ownership for a couple of months!!
The Evo\'s are fantastic all round cars. The performance is usually better than people expect and the handling is awsome. You would however certainly pay a lot more for a standard VI as compared to a standard RX!!
Around the track is as much down to the driver as it is down to the car. I have only owned the RX a couple of weeks and I love the rear wheel experience and am looking forward to the possibility of a track day soon (as soon as I resolve my boost issues).
Unlike Bramble, I love the AYC (although it does take some of the fun out of driving). What would I prefer? A £2K bill to replace AYC or a £4K bill for an engine rebuild?:2eek
If you just want the cars for track days then I guess the RX is the one to go for but if you will be using them on the road as well, then probably an Evo.
Actually, thinking back to my first standard FD it had sweet FA grip in the wet and certainly caused a few sweaty palms so in this case I probably ranted a bit too much. :)
have to say again as nice looking as the rex is it is great for track but out there on the roads the evos and imprezas will whup ur arse at the first sign of a damp road in the dry the best u can hope for it to stay with them but u wont whup em...driver skill is only for the track anyway as racing on the road is a mugs game
ive taken loads of impreza\'s on street you must have just had bad experiences :p
you cant count cars that are parked up:Tongue1 :Tongue1 :Tongue1
cheeky git :p
i think you\'ll change your mind once your car is finally finnished by carl ;)
its back and needs some miles on it but havnt got a lot of time at the moment..feels very responsive at the moment though will get together when i have more time to talk cars blah blah
For what it\'s worth,
Get a monster 3 rotor, still won’t keep up with those techi things round the country lanes dry or wet. BUT! I doubt if you will find an Evo to stay anywhere near me on a dry day on a good open road, I will kill it stone dead, in fact I will make it look, rather silly. But it\'s gonna cost cost loads! :spank

must have been a dry day and running over 400hp this guy is talking standard rx7 ad standard evo..the rex needs a ecu for light fettling but evo will be ok with basic mods and will be knocking on 350hp territory
So a average (term used loosely) mildly modified rx7 i.e with power fc, straight through say 300FWhp with the same driver ability would lose to an probably unmodified evoVI being highly competitive i want to win round the track! racing on highway, down back roads doesn\'t really mean anything to me but losing on the track to also my highly competitive, ungraceful winner of a mate will leave a nasty taste!

going with an fd no matter what
These cars cannot be realistically compared, they are too different, the only comman things are that they are Japanese and Fast !
They will never tick the same boxes.
FD\'s are beautiful, rare, individual, agile electrifying things and offer an incredible ownership experience to those who cherish them.
Evo\'s are very very fast 4 door family saloons, but will never be verging on the supercar experience of a proper FD.
Similar speeds, different league altogether though.
fd all the way!
i have found many cars i\'ve raced scoobs evos etc etc even new mainstream cars are very powerful to 60 but ive always found the fd just keeps going an going and going ........ you get the idea.
no lag depending on setup and a well setup one will dust off most cars. all dependant on variables ie power driver setup spec and road.
oh yea just to add friday morning absolutely dusted a brand new 2007 xkr convertible :rollin
definately agree with the different league comments though.
i think the fd is a true drivers car with a real supercar feel from the shape to the feeling.
it has aged 15 years and still looks better in most opinions than any evo or scooby whereas a 15 year old evo...
however i want a fd now because i have sorted all my woes with it and found it to be overwhelmingly fun!!
in a simple way when it was average or a ordinary 14 year old rx7 it had xxx amount of problems some were obvious and some not some showd signs and others not. after alot of fettling 6 months worth infact my car is almost sorted to a very good standard meaning its is now so much more powerful predicatble and rewarding to drive and own!
the amount of bad fds out there i think exceeds any other such supercar.
when i first got it and with all the problems it wasnt that fast and handled...well not at all so i didnt want it after a while! now i just want to show everyone what it can do more so on a track than the streets.
saying all this i dont consider myself a "driver" of an fd for too much longer as its not financially or literally practical.... in comes evo/supra more cruisers i think and practical in so many ways if i am honest i would say these are more mainstream and general all rounders whereas the fd ticks different boxes altogether.
as a family car i cant see better than a evo or a scoob not sure about fuel though isnt the evo the worst jap?
my 2p.. or probably 3p looking at the length :rollin

Road racing is a mugs game yes. But most of us do it a bit, hopefully, when it is relatively safe and dont get carried away. It is hard to resist although I am getting better at resisting as I get older.
The rest of your statement - well its hard because I think we are talking bog standard cars in which case your opinion has some merit, but not much :chat . But who drives a standard FD? I drive mine daily and its a bl00dy riot in the wet or dry!

Totaly agree. It really depends on which boxes you want ticked. As much as I love Evo\'s, I\'m totaly taken by the FD:InLove (my first FD!) So much so that I\'m already planning the next FD that I want:D. Even though I have some boost issues to reslove, the car is awsome. I\'ve been in m4drx\'s FD and I\'ve gotta say he\'s got one sweet motor, incredibly fast and revs forever. Can\'t wait to get my FD running sweet.
Best way to reslove this......have one of each:Giggle

same here... :) there\'s just something about the FD and rotary engine that gets you hooked more then you realise... lol :driving
I disagree that 2 different cars cannot be compared together. You can compare any car to any other car
How does the Vehyron compare to a fiesta? In actual fact you need to be more specific, that\'s all.
How does the Vehyron compare against a fiesta around a track? Easy: the vehyron whips arse!
But how does the Vehyron compare against the fiesta for going to the supermarket and getting the weeks shopping for a family of four? Pretty dreadful, the fiesta is better.
So, in fact, it\'s the specific comparison that needs to be analysed.
Is it how does the \'7 compare against the Evo round a track? Or in the wet? etc, etc
i ve been fairly specific already
Yes, and therefore people should not be saying they\'re not comparable!

An evo is easier to drive quick than a Rex imho, as it has all those \'driver aids\'. So if you and your mate haven\'t done many track days the evo will whoop your arse. If not it\'ll be fairly even I think.

I have owned quite a lot of hardware over the years. S14a 200sx - modded, Alfa 156 GTA - modded, 93 FD - modded, Evo VI TME - modded, and now I have my 2001 FD, plus an RX8 - both modded.
All of the cars have been great for certain reasons, and I have enjoyed ownership for certain reasons. Each have been worth owning, and each car has been head and shoulders above the rest for one or more aspects. A recent Top Gear article I read went through the "top 50 fastest cars" and number one was "the last hire car you had" - on the basis that you would rag the t*ts off it and not care - it just seemed so much faster than anything else !!
As others have mentioned, it\'s very difficult comparing the Evo with the FD. If car ownership to you is about the total experience, then it\'s almost impossible to look at in this way.
For me, I have returned to the FD as it is more of an exclusive and considered marque than the Evo. I had the TME (or the Evo 6.5 as some call it) which is widely considered to be the best of the Evo\'s outside of the extreme limited edition stuff. Yes, it was damn fast, yes it went round corners on rails, I modded it with the usual air, exhaust, ECU, etc and it was a beast. However, it never felt as fast as even my lightly modded first FD - something to do with being sat up begging in a whopping great family car shell. Don\'t get me wrong it was neck breaking acceleration, plenty of positive Gs in the corners, but it just didn\'t feel as fast as it actually was.
In terms of handling, it was incredible, but felt rather artificial. As others have mentioned, it does it all for you. So much so in fact, that you need to drive it differently to the way you would expect in order to keep out of trouble. I had a lesson with the local dealer in order to prepare for the experience as when you start losing it, you have to fight every instinct to back off, and keep the power going. If you don\'t you will lose it - big time. Due to the driver aids, it also gives you a sense of bravado that it dangerous - you will drive beyond your limits as you trust the car to make up for it. If (when) you do finally lose it, you will lose it big time and probably kill yourself.... In the FD, you can feel the handling, you are much more tuned in to what is going on, and you drive within your own limits. To me that is much safer and more rewarding.
On top of that, the ownership experience was totally different. I get people wowed by the FD, wondering what it is, even people who don\'t normally notice cars do, there is a real respect for it\'s design and it\'s beauty. In the Evo, you do get noticed, but by a totally different type of person - no disrespect intended, but typically it\'s the Nova/Fiesta/Max Power (of old) type of teen that shouts "oi oi - Evooooo" at you. Pull up in a petrol station in an Evo and invariably a Burberry clad 19 year old will saunter up to ask you if you have nitrous.

A subjective well rounded post :)
hmm, this is an interesting topic for me, as i`m in the middle of deciding whether or not to sell my RX7 to my mate and to buy an evo 5.
I`ve had a tuned evo 4 gsr, and loved it...but nowhere near as much as I love the rex.
I`ve always wanted the evo 5 though, they just look so mean, probably the best looking evo imo. I really dont know what to do, and this post isnt really helping me decide lol
evo or rex, rex or evo?...AARGH! lol

Thats because these family saloons start to run out of steam at 80 whereas the fd is just getting started:WaveBye
well a while back when my car was running around standard power maybe a little more i had a go with a 300 bhp old shape impreza on a dry long straight road, i was behind him and we both booted it at about 20mph and up until about 60-70 i found it hard to stay with him and then after that he just ran out of puff, once i got into the magical third gear i was right up his backside, i reckon i could have taken him aswell but was a busy road.

olly what mods do you have to compare to those??
filters, decat r magic zorst and ecu lol but still i doubt my little rx7 would compete with 700bhp
im talking put both cars near enough standard side by side and the rx wins full stop
oh yeah i know that, the evos are pretty strangled in standard form, altho most cars are these days to meet eu laws n regs
and i bet if you put a 700bhp evo against a 700bhp rx7 the rx7 will win hehe:chat

Then there is something wrong with your suspension and/or tyres.
nah the clutch is a bit fiesty, and when i let it out with a bit too much power on she tends kick kick about abit, its on tein coilovers and was set up by hunter 4wheel center in japan, so the suspentions pretty spot on and its got eagle f1\'s on the back and yoko advans on the front
Never driven an Evo so can\'t comment on performance comparisons, but to me the Evo has as much character as a dishwasher (probably handles slightly better though):D .
i dunno they have ayc and the rs diffs are pretty good altho the form of the drive is compleatly diffrent, their 2 diffrent cars with 2 diffrent set ups, when the rx7 was designed they had passion for one thing and that was fun who cared about bot space and a glove box to big enough to hold the manual, now the evo has to forfill things like 4 doors room for babys and a big boot for shopping to make it copetative in todays market
like i said 2 totally diffrent cars
2 true the evo is the fastest production 4 door, it is not designed anywere with raw power like the rex
Round a track the Rx7 wins every time! Period!! Come rain or shine, the Rx will have it, there is one of the Jap vids with an Evo Rx and a Supra I think, and the Evo is the first to fall off in the rain. These slick diffs aren\'t all they are cracked up to be! Sometimes raw talent behind the wheel makes up for it!

4wd in rain aint as good as people do think. i think on 5th gear awhile ago they had a 4wd fwd and rwd cars out on a section of track on a VERY wet corner and the rwd was far quicker throught the corner.

Yes if both the Evo and the Rex are in a average to fast drivers\' hands then the Evo might give the Rex a good run, but stick a good driver in both and the Rex will annihilate the Evo. The Evos running at Combe are 500bhp+ and although they aren\'t on slicks they are still 4 seconds a lap slower than my times in Rx (only 261.77bhp too! ;))
