Title: Your opinions please! turbos???
Post by: Baz116 on May 28, 2007, 06:25:34 PM
Well, Friday 25th may, just about to enjoy the bank holiday weekend in my rex when, yep, it breaks! Think 1st turbo has siezed, so basically i wondering whether to;

a) replace with new standard turbos, sensible but boring!

b) replace with some high flow turbos from WGT

c) single turbo...

d) another option that your going to tell me about!!!!!???!!! :p

Im thinking option b) but just wondering what other people think/have experienced???
thanks.

Go either stock or single for what you pay for high flow turbo\'s you may as well go single. Speak to anyone that has used high flows and see what they think most i\'m sure will say they wished they\'d gone single.

Hmmm... I\'m kind of in the same situation... looks like the rear seal is starting to go on my first turbo... Clive said it\'s not anything to worry about at the moment but I am thinking about a decat which I think will hasten the demise of the turbos, also got HKS intake and WGT SMIC to add....

Personally I\'d be heading towards a small single turbo conversion I guess. Just remember if you upgrade the Turbos then you\'re going to be looking at intrcoolers and other bits etc. including ECU and mapping anyhow...

The only other option for me would be to replace with another standard pair and convert to non sequential.

Not really any help but as the high flow TT\'s are only £200 cheaper than a T04E single conversion then I think a single conversion would be the best bet!!!

thanks kev, not too sure about the single turbo though, i`ve heard there good for the track but for road use twins are better, is this true?

*puts little finger to conrer of lips*  ONE MILLION DORRAH

seriously... 600 was what i paid. that was for a 2nd hand new set (ie they had never been run on a car but had been bought by someone else first)

For a brand spankers new set, why not go for the 99 spec twins from mazdatrix.

looks like you\'re set already then bud, I\'d see if I could get a drive/ride of someones single and see what I thought.. Is the ecu mappable out of interest? Sorry haven\'t been round here for long so am still learning.
Good luck with whatever you decide mate!

With a small turbo then there\'s no issues with lag its only the big power guys that have to compromise in this regard.

Kind Sir,my opinion would be: sell your car and buy an OLD SCHOOL car without any turbo\'s :Thumbsup!  Run a cool BP or PP motor, have many happy motoring miles without any worries.:Typing  YES old school cars do pull the chics........:Ladys-man :wiggle

I\'d go for 99spec turbos.. Just look at the RE-Amemiya touge monster.  Enough said. :P That\'s what Im going for if/when mine goes..

Another thing to think about is insurance. Bunging in a set in new twins, even 99 spec won\'t make a difference. I heard that Insurance companies will hammer you on going single if you are under 30...hence why I\'m waiting a year to do my single conversion.

Another option D ;) Get both of the existing turbo\'s rebuilt. Shouldnt cost as much as a second hand set and they\'ll be as good as new and last for ages.

i have a low mileage set of 1999 turbo\'s that have done 30k miles, they are NOT 99 spec as they came from an RB model but the car was a 1999. No play and the blades are all very good as they were replaced before the engine died so no tips have been shot through them.

Offers,

sorry for the thread hi jack

Go single

It is great, I have a medium sized general bearing tub and it rocks.  Lag is not an issues, you will not stop smiling.

It doesn\'t have to cost you a huge amount, here is where I got my turbo from

Antnicuk... I have a little pang of guilt as it\'s Baz116 that needs these more than me so lets see what he has to say first and if any more bids come in,
Thanks

Strickerz,
extremely gentlemenly of you to say that, but i`m hoping that the warranty i took out on the car will cover it, i wont find out until pip has a look at the car on fri 8th, so (kicking myself in the teeth) i`ll have to stand down from this generous offer as i can not guarantee i will need them. (I`ll probably need them now i`ve said that!!!) thanks anyway antinicuk and strickerz.

O, and,
what is the difference between the turbos on mine (1994) and 99 spec????

Gonzoninja, thanks i`d forgotten about that minor technical difficulty!!! i`m 23 so no single for me

Andy.A, good point!, but if the warranty covers it surely they`ll put new ones on,.... hopefully..........

thanks, i`ll update you with either a rant if they deside to be ******** or a happy smug message to say its fixed!!!!

And oldone,,,, you`ll never change me!!!!!!!!! :Tongue1

cheers for the advice guys!!!!

Title: BNR Twins
Post by: nicksterrx7 on June 03, 2007, 07:45:21 PM
Or to be completely different why not go for a set of BNR twin turbos?  Good for upto 400 rwhp.

Just got a set myself (still running the engine in).  The guys at Rotechniks seemed impressed.  They are fully remanufactured with Garret made 360 degree barings.  The turbines are larger and the \'intakes\' widened.

Keep the twins driveability but with single turbo power.  Seems like the best of all worlds.....apart from the lead time - took me 4 months to get mine back.  Lets hope they are worth the wait.

Had my high flow twins from pip, and never regreted them. I run 285 bhp atw on stock fueling. He said with fueling upgrade would get another 30 bhp on a safe setup. No lag at all, and far more power than standard. For road use only i cant see why people want mediun and large single turbos.

Off top of my head in no particular order...

Better temps
Better Power
Simpler setup
More Reliability
Better Driveability

I\'d go T04Z if I had a big budget.
GT35/40 meduim budget
T04S Small Budget

My T04S is frikkin awesome on the road, and MUCH safer in the wet than those pesky twins !!

How many cars are written off because of that 2nd turbo kick.
