Title: Bank Holiday Project
Post by: Hayward North on May 27, 2007, 07:40:13 PM
Well finally found a cwest style front end so this weekend has given me the opertunaty to put it on.

After fitting removing  and refitting it a hundred times im almost happy with the fitment, gonna be transfering the rubber trim that runs between the bumper and bonnet to the new bumper.

I have made some really nice braces for the bottom of the bumper as well as iv seen 2 manny aftermarket bumpers that move when you shake them.

I have to admit that even though i dont think its a genuin cwest the quality of it is amazing and fitment is very good.

Just need to paint it black, make air ducts out of ally for the rad and oil coolers and fit some black mesh.

Then hopefully my RotaryArt scoot style bonet will turn up :D

Thanx guys :D
Am taking my time as i want it to be a top jub insted of just chucking it on.

Im also looking for some quality mesh preferably black, anyone know where i can get some online ?

Nice thing is the bumper has left me loads of space for a FMIC :D , Whereas the standard bumper didnt have room for anything substantial.

So nope ya eyes are fine :)

Been Fine tuning the fitment of the bumper today with the adition of securing the braces for underneath the lip of the bumper, in perticular the sides as i have never liked the way that the bumper fits with a flair to the side that is wider than the rest of the car.

In the 1st picture you can see that the sides flair out with no bracing.
In the second picture it has a much nicer line and is the same width as the rest of the car.

Also added some aluminium panels to direct air flow to the radiator better, also looks better as it looks like somthing is missing without them, kinda empty.

1st and second pic are with and without ally pannel to direct air towards the rad.
3rd pic is what the looked like before i fitted them.
I used cardboard to make a template and transferd it the the aluminium, then sprayed them black.

Well im happy with the fitment now and this is how she stands at the mo.
Managed to retain all my undergards and trays including the brake duckts that go from the stock splitter and cover the oil cooler bottoms.
Some small areas require a gauard making but these are going to be a near future job, for now priority lies in painting it black with 2pak base coat and 5 layers of clear coat.

Mesh and duckts are fitted in the picture but my crap photography skills make it hard to see.

Have you suffered from the dreaded corrosion of the wheels? We\'re still getting ours routinely replaced under warranty, including the bling chromed ones; I\'m thinking of going for a LapTab Flash Chrome (http://www.lap-tab.co.uk/alloywheels.php) finish after warranty\'s up, as seen here on RX8OC (http://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12756&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=laptab+flash+chrome&start=15).

I havent sufferd corrosion but i have a bodyshop attached to the car sales department so it wont be a problem.
That said i do like the LapTab finish, would sort my yerning for a shineyer wheel as i love the clean look of the rx8 wheels :D

I see Lap-Tab mentioned above.

I took my wheels to them for advice - crap - perhaps other ppl have had good service but I thought both their customer service and advice sucked.

Took my Re three piece in asking what could be done, they couldn\'t tell if the outer rim was polished or chromed [these are specialist ppl mind] and all they wanted to do with them was powder coat them silver

\'I don\'t want that\'
\'Well that\'s all we can offer\'

I\'d been in a year or so ago with the car to be told I\'d have to take the tyres off and split the rims myself, which I did.

Since then they have a posh new reception with the obligatory bird fronting but I\'ll never go back.

Perhaps I went on a bad day.

I did bump into one of their workers outside who said try a magnet to see it they\'re chromed - not an offer from his company who just weren\'t interested.

Ah, good job iv decided against changing my wheels or colour of em, decided that the standard RX8 alloys suit me down to the ground, if they tarnish then ill just refurb them in our paint shop for free :D , maybe just change the colour to a gun metal grey insted of silver.

Thanx for the info though.

^^^^ johnf: Thanks for the heads-up on Lap-tab. Though a few \'8 owners appear to have had a service, and the results look stunning (IMO), I am a bit skeptical because they offer a \'turn-around in one day\' or \'while-you-wait\' service; whereas other places have quoted 3-4 days minimum... I\'d probably rather the latter and have the finish done properly?

^^^^ Steve -- car\'s looking great, especially the wheels ;) Gunmetal would look good IMO, maybe you could offer a service to out-of-warranty \'8 owners too? :D
