Title: Oil Temps In The Summer
Post by: Laeeq on May 24, 2007, 05:40:11 PM
Now that the summer is almost here, what are peoples thoughts on ideal or safe oil temps in the summer.  For me its very very important to run rotarys on cold side in the summer and one of the thing im looking at getting replaced are the oil coolers and if the standard coolers are not up to task.

any info guys...i have very big openning on both sides of my car\'s oil coolers with some ducting and will be installing the guages to keep an eye on ideal/safe temps...:2Confused

mine usually sits at around 60 whilst driving, and rises to around 90 or even just under 100 in heavy, prolonged traffic. if it gets this high i usually pull over and stop for a bit, although it drops quickly once on the move again. having twin coolers helps :wiggle .

btw, did you get my email!?

Has anyone though about putting a small cooling fan on the oil coolers?? Somthing like the fans used on the side air intake on the MR2\'s would be a good size. Put them on a switch so that when you are sat in traffic you can turn them on & keep your oil temps down!! I\'m going to be doing this soon enough myself!!!

All depends on the oil used and how its being used.

Get the same temps as RAW 60 - 70 deg normally and up to 95 if sitting still but always drop quick when moving again.  Only difference the summer seems to have made is that the oil gets up to temp much quicker.

Mine are pretty solid.  I\'ve got standard twin oil coolers and when I\'m giving it some it\'ll stay about 70.  Cruising at 70mph it\'ll drop to about 60.  If I\'ve been booting it and then get stuck in traffic it\'ll rise to about 90 at the most and then start to drop down.  I seem to remember a post oilman did a while ago about oils.  I seem to remember of the top of my head that about 120:eek:  was when an oil stops staying in grade and you should start to think about using a thicker oil.  I\'d imagine better quality oils deal with heat better.

Surely the same temps in the summer are the same in the winter?

It\'s just the time it takes to get up to temp?

But in the summer you\'ve got the ambient temp being far higher than in the winter and therefore your not going to be able to get rid of the heat as quickly as in winter when its colder.
As long as your moving it should be ok but anything over 90 personally I\'ll pull over, put the bonnet up and leave her for 20-30 mins to cool.  Better safe than sorry.

True but the delta between ambient 30C and 2C and oil temps of 90C is enough but not that massive... Running temps should be the same as the oil coolers have a thermostat as I understand.

But for a fully synth we used to see anything under 120C as fine, but that was also on a I4 engine, so it could well be different on the 13b.

My normal temp it 80C, recently in the hot weather its been between 90-100 (never higher so far). I\'m using 10-40 mineral oil.

I\'ve got one of the earlier FDs with the single oil radioator.

Should I be concerned?
