Title: Clutch burning
Post by: Rocho on May 23, 2007, 09:55:17 PM
When I pull off with plenty of revs or just hold the car on clutch for even a short time I can smell my clutch burning. Its not slipping but its a very strong burning smell compared to other cars.

Is this normal in the RX7?

Mine did this when I first got hold of it. I simply had a new ACT performance clutch fitted and at the same time had the matching ACT flywheel and counterweight fitted as well. Perfect now. No burning smell or slipping. Just grippy grippy!

has it got an up rated clutch, like the simple excedy fast road clutch etc.

if so they are made from a bio (organic) material and on pull away or holding it on, it will slip a little and will cause it to smell, this is due to the material used.  it kind of melts causeing a slight moulten layer.  aspestos didnt used to do this but now you cant use this, as it is a bad material etc.

the more uprated clutches go away from this bio material and use more of a carbon metalic etc, which does not smell in the same way, however it makes it more snatchy and more of an "on/off switch" type clutch.

best thing to do is not hold it on, in traffic etc.  as i said mine used to do it, on pull away, normally when cold, or faster launch.  all though the clutch couldnt cope with the power of my car and it fried the clutch and put heat spots all the way through the fly, within 5000miles.

As far as I know its a normal clutch, doesn\'t feel very snatchy / slippy. I\'ve been deliberatly easy on the clutch recently but it does seem to be getting worse. It dont bother me, but when you pull off (aka show off) and then get that look from the passenger hmmm whats that funny smell from your car? It dont impress!

this is what happened to mine half way through the tunnel run then on the way back it totally died.  and i couldnt not accelerate for toffee, could speed up by about 10 mph every minute of very gradual fettling.   it was even slipping in reverse on a flat drive, lol....
