Hi, more info required, I have notice the headlamps on my 1984 FB are in the "enough light to get you to the toilet on a dark evening" rather than the "enough light to get you home" league as they should be.
I have seen the Phillips bulbs offering 50% more light for the same wattage. Before I go unscrewing things do Phillips do headlamps bulbs for this car or is there an alternative?
Thanks
i have uprated Philips bulbs but didnt see much difference, however i belive it is down to the old style headlamp itself newer ones offer more reflection so i ordered some of these

I\'ve never had a problem with my stock lights and think they are pretty good if not highly acceptable and being a night rally driver I am a little picky when it comes to lights.
The large round lights are usually far better than most 80\'s and 90\'s designs of lights that didn\'t benefit from computer designed complicated free form reflectors. Your problem might be down to degraded mirroring on the reflectors or perhaps some first gens came with the useless sealed beam units that Mazda favoured for some obscure reason in later pop-up lights.
My suggestion would be to buy some decent replacement units (they aren\'t that expensive and they are universal fit) made by someone like Hella or Ring (i.e a known make) and a decent set of bulbs. You could try Osram (I used these uprated bulbs in my rally car http://www.dclighting.co.uk/ ) or if you are feeling flush you can get HID conversion for sensible money these days (I think Mazdarotaryparts on here is still doing a group buy on them)
OR you could change the bulbs first and see how it goes ? does the mirroring on hte lights look OK? or is it dull or at all corroded ? what about the lenses ? are they OK. It might be worth checking the alignment too as I expect the V8 up front makes the nose dip a little more than standard, alignment is key to good lights.
Thanks for the replys, I will take the originals out and have a look at the reflectors. I don\'t know yet if they are sealed units. The alignment should be OK, just passed an MOT. (if I am correct that they check that at MOT time)
Thanks.
