Title: New Clutch - not sure
Post by: johnf on January 19, 2004, 09:36:11 PM
For about a month I\'ve thought my clutch was on the way out so I\'ve been driving with that in mind.

Decided to test it tonight by trying to pull away with the hand brake on. The car pulled well so I planted the foot brake as well and it stalled at about 2500rpm.

The symptoms are that when the second turbo comes in around 4500 revs \'it aint right\' the revs go quicker than the car for a while and there\'s no real \'kick\' anymore. Sounds like classic clutch slip but how can I be sure before investing in a new clutch.

Is it that 4500rpm is when the most power goes down?

Could it be anything else?

Do I just wait and see how things develop?

I\'ve driven 2 FD\'s recently that have done just this; seem ok a lot of the time but hammer it across the transition and theres little power being transmitted until torque drops off enough I guess. Changed clutches in both (they were pretty mullered) and all was fine once more...

Hi John,

It\'s definatly worn out as l have come across the it only slips when the 2nd Turbo cuts in several times now with the 3rd Gen.

Thanks both,

Just needed confirmation from the experts before parting with the money.

Just out of interest how miles should an FD clutch last on a standard car? and much do standard one\'s cost?, i.e for just the plate and for the whole clutch assembly.

Cheers,

Paul:)
