Title: Wheels to fit FB
Post by: Rx7V8 on May 16, 2007, 10:58:25 AM
Hi, I have just bought a 1984 FB with a slight modification, a V8 now resides where the old motor was. I know some will say this is a disgrace a travisty etc, but I has happened and to be fair is it makes for very interesting car.

I need new tyres though (I have 4 diffent makes on the car at present and the back end lights up a bit to often in the wet). What I am asking is there anywhere to get decent tyres for a FB, mine has 14" rims, and Falken appear to be the only company (i have heard of before) offering tyres in that size. I know I could get new alloys but I have enough toys to buy for it at present.

Thanks

Standard Size is 205/60 14inch H Rated. Fitted on what Mazda called \'Sonic\' rims. You might have enough insurance problems without changing wheel size away from standard.
Best tyres I\'ve come across for general road use are by B F Goodridge. That\'s because the tread and tyre wall profile are very near to the old Dunlops that Mazda used to fit from the factory. (Some tyres look like balloons when viewed from front or rear e.g. old Goodyear NCT range).
Tyres are scarce in this size, as youv\'e found out. Also try Yokahama or Bridgestone.

Had Yoko A539\'s on my old FB. Size was 195/60 R14. Liked them a lot. Got them from Demon Tweeks for about £45 each. Had Falken\'s of the same size on the front. The Yoko\'s seemed to offer a slightly wider contact area compared to the same size Falkens.

Been using khumo KU19\'s all round on mine, about 50quid a tyre. Quite happy with them in the wet and dry but car is still less than stock power, about 80bhp at fly. Car gets used daily and i don\'t hang about :D

They are only in 195\'s though. The original tyre size is rare as hell !

I have a set of 4 on standard rims that have next to no miles on them (traded up shortly after) they are 3 or 4 years old but have been stored in a cool dry garage with no load on them (ie. not on a car) would consider selling them if you wanted some. They are falken (Z512??)  205/60R14\'s on the standrd rims

bit far for you to come get them though!

I always seem to be putting the boot in to peoples suggestions don\'t I. Sorry about this habit, I\'ll try and be more positive in the future!
The trouble with 195 by 14 inch is that whilst you can get them easily, they are not standard. Therefore if you have a smash and the car has an assessor who knows his job, the insurance company might walk away from it. Doubt that you can just declare them as 195\'s either because why would the insurance company accept a narrower tyre just
because they\'re easier to get?
Mike\'s sound like a windfall to me. Rims as well by the sound of it.

Thanks for all the replys, I would live to change out the wheels and tyres, but it is a long way to travel.  I will go for the falkens as I can get them in Aberdeen.

If someone could tell me how to post photos I will.  Biggest problem so far is a worn trust bearing, which i will fix tomorrow if the clutch arrives on time.

The next task will have to be building a new exhaust, or mdifying the one on the car. The exhaust hangs too low on the car, and grinds.

Does anyone know what the max size of exhaust the original one was, i could get one and mate it to the V8 if it is wide enough.

there is another option, the car is very low and hard, I could go back to std, but hat fun would that be.

Theres loads of room underneath. Best bet for posting photos is to use something like //www.photobucket.com and use the img link to post them up.

Looks a great car, very tidy, but I don\'t know how you\'ll deal with the exhaust because of course the normal car only has the right hand side to locate to the offside of the rotary. You can get a \'Double S\' system from a firm down in the West Country. I think you can see the system in bits on their website. Front pipe is about 40mm (two into one just before the front box).

it doesnt seem to sit much lower than standard probably just the extra weight, mine is as low as you can go without coilovers or shorted shocks but i have no trouble with the exhaust!

Thanks, Could you give me the website/company name please.  At the moment there is a 2-1 silencer that splits back into 2, so I may be able to jerry rig everything to go down one exhaust.
