Title: FD interior electrics prob
Post by: D1 WTF on May 15, 2007, 02:19:48 PM
my head unit keeps going  dead, at first i thought it was the fuse in the back.  so i replaced this and it worked for another month (the old one didnt look blown).
then recently it did it again.  again i replaced the fuse and it worked again (again the fuse was not blown), but this time only for about 40 mins.  this time i pulled it out, put the same one back in and it turned on.  starts on standby, so press the button to turn it on----it then goes to tuner, press the button again-----almost instantly as soon as it goes to CD it dies.  no light at all.

at about the same time as this first started the back lights in my dash (speedo etc) started playing up.  the needles would light up but the faces wouldn\'t.  it sometimes just sorts its self out, either over a minute or maybe it is a bump in the road.
however if when the are not working, you play with the back light dimmer wheel, up down, up down etc.  it will suddenly start working.  often, goes off again a few seconds later, but playing with the adjuster, will sort it out.
generaly speaking after the car has been running for twenty mins plus it normally stops playing up.

i think it is something to do with a bad earth.  as i think both units use the same earth.   does anyone know where this earth is situated etc
or any other ideas????

it may be pulling to much current when you select the cd (as this needs more juice) but as you say it will be down to a earth behind the dash somewhere! rather than the player either pull the stereo out and have a good look with a torch for any wires near bare metal stripped wires etc, the only way to solve it for good sounds like continuite checks or pulling the dash off

you got a loose wire in there somewhere! either a bad earth or positive there will be joints in the loom behind the dash-mostly hidden  try tracing the obvious ones first and check earth points for rust or corrosion. good luck
