Title: Old bolts are bad mmm-kay!
Post by: probedb on May 13, 2007, 08:17:28 PM
So I decided since I had everything back to start putting my engine back together. I had 2 bolts snap on me, one is stuck in the exhaust manifold and needs drilling out, another thankfully came out with a monkey wrench. Thankfully I felt another going before it actually snapped and it was seriously elongated!

Just a word of warning to anyone attempting to reuse bolts from a 14 year old car...dont! Well it\'s just a suggestion :) I\'m ordering new ones before going any further as I can\'t take the chance.

I would always recommend new exhaust bolts and nuts unless they are stainless, it really isnt worth the risk of that sheared bolts just where you cant get at it. Hope all yours came out alright.

I would recomend against using stainless Studs (there realy easy to snap) the key to not braking Studs is to use Brass Nuts (there quite soft and don\'t rust on)

they must be hard to use? How would you tighten them up? surely the Brass Studs are to soft? Are you sure you don\'t mean Brass Nuts and Stainless Studs?

I\'ve got the studs and turbo nuts, it\'s actually some of the smaller ones that snapped like those holding the oil metering pump and also the ones that hold the big actuator onto the exhaust manifold. No reply from re:worx yet.

I also snapped the 2 bolts that hold the wastegate actuator on. I just run a tap down and used ordinary bolts. I also managed to thread one of the turbo to downpipe studs whilst taking it off which is quite odd as i only removed and refitted the downpipe a month previous. Just spoke to ray crowe and ordered a complete set, not cheap tough at around $9 per stud!!

lol, you try removing bolts from a 22yr old car. Been doing the 1st gens bushes on the rear. I haven\'t snapped a single bolt :Giggle

Best bet is to get good quality release spray and wire brush the exposed threads on the other side of the bolt. Once unseized they come off fine.

Although exhaust bolts are a complete mare because of the heat, they rust to death !
