Title: noisy rear suspension
Post by: JohnP on May 12, 2007, 03:10:10 PM
hi, just bought my 1994 RX7, and it has very loud rear-suspension.

i was just wondering if they have common problems with nackered bushes? anti-roll bar bushes etc.  Doesnt knock if i go over say... a speedhump, but stick me on a background where the ground is un-even on diff sides, then i hear it.

also, who would i need to speak to, to get a set cheaply.

I the back end in notorious for being noisy. I think the pillow balls (i dont know ether) are the main culprits, but iv changed all of the rear bushes and still get knocking. I\'v been now told it might be the shockers. Sorry mate not much help really. the same as any thing on a 10+ year old car. the problem is that when you replace one thing, it highlites something else, and so the merry-go-round continues...

Would the noise occur if you pushed on the back of the car downwards or when you push the side?

Worn pillowballs are known to cause knocking noises in the rear, 3 either side iirc connecting the hub to the toe and trailing arm. Not cheap either, another possible problem could be worn diff bushes.

jack the back wheels up and see if the wheels will move back and forth as if holind the wheel at 9.15 position!! i did my pillow bushes to day fixed couldnt belive how little movement could make so much noise!!!

Pillow ball bushes were around 50quid each from Mazda - although try some vendors who will probably be able to supply them cheaper.

I see you\'re in Wellingborough - I\'ve used RGS on several occasions (last time was a couple of years ago to replace 4 rear bushes - which incidentally cured my knocking) and were always very helpful.

Interesting one for you with regards to kncking at the rear. I have had it for months and moths. did the bushes, check the boot catch took the spoiler off for a day to if that was the noise. Turned out to be the exhaust hitting the rear toe hook!!!

i\'ll go wiggle my exhaust in a bit then.

i\'ve noticed i can make it knock when i accelerate hard, or brake/come off throttle suddenly.

Same symptoms I had. Replaced 4 bushes and cured the problem. Also very noticeable (on my car at least) that when jacked up, both back wheels had movement (mine was vertical - rather than the 9.15 as suggestd above). No movement after bushes were replaced.
