Right. Next stage on the RX7 is to beef up the ICE system. It\'s a 1993 UK spec FD13.
I have already decided on a head unit to fit a single DIN slot (gauges in the bottom din panel). Just now need some speakers.
I won\'t be going down the sub and amp route, will just be replacing all of the speakers in the cockpit.
What I need to know is... what are the dimensions and depths of the standard speakers?
Door speakers? (Components?)
Rear speakers? (Are these 6x9\'s?)
Front centre speaker? (What is this?)
Are there any other speakers fitted in there as standard?
Or just the five?
Not sure if it has seperate tweeters up front???
Once I know the dimensions and depths of the standard speakers I can then search for some decent replacements.
I would also appreciate it if any of you other guys that have done the same as this could post up which speakers you have fitted, have tried, would recommend or not recommend. That would be helpful.
Cheers. :guinness
For starters, there are a couple of \'sounds\' threads, including my "Time to get the FD ICE\'d up" thread. May be worth reading those...

Mazda in their inifinite wisdom decided to use annoying speaker sizes - the fronts are 16cm/6", 17cm/6.5" will not fit without surgery. The rear ones are 6x8s which again is an unusual size. In both places you have bog-all mounting depth as well.
If I were you I\'d buy a really nice set of components or coaxials for the front, forget about the rear speakers[1] and the centre speaker. The centre is only useful if you\'ve got the necessary electronic wizardry to give it a mixed signal from both channels. Or a 5.1 unit (in which case you\'d want the rear speakers as well) but most 5.1 units sound, well, not very good when emulating surround sound.

Nope, space for coaxials only unless you\'re willing to stick them on top of the demister or modify the A-pillar covers (which is what I\'m looking at).

I know that you can fit (just about) JL Audio VR600 mid-bass in the stock locations if you cut out the rain cover in the back and put in a 6mm baffle and from memory they have about 70mm mounting depth. You can\'t really use a deeper baffle if you want to keep them under the door card, which rules out leaving the rain cover in place. 17cm will not fit unless you make some severe modifications to the original mounting plate, ie cut the original mounting off and put on a bigger MDF baffle.
Something like this may fit just with a baffle as they have a very small mounting depth:

I would keep the system very simple initially and go either for some decent co-ax like the Boston Acoustics above or a set of components and run them through a small amp - headunit amplifiers are generally adequate but using a decent separate amp both makes their life easier (because they don\'t heat up that much) and does improve the sound as H/U amps usually aren\'t quite as powerful as expected and start clipping rather early.
[1] Unless very carefully set up they tend to mess up the sound stage somewhat fierce. The prime example is my runabout dodgymobile Merc 250D with 4" fronts and 6x9 rear. Depending on the music you\'ll have the three top strings of a guitar coming from the front and the three bottom ones from the back. Interesting sound effect but overall a bit rubbish.
