Title: Help No Spark.....
Post by: bobert on May 10, 2007, 11:45:44 PM
I have recently re-built my 13b engine due to a snapped tip.
The engine went back in with no problems and it fired up and was running fine.
It was idling for about 20 minutes when it suddenly stated spluttering, missing and then it died.
When I tried to re start it was trying to fire but it just would not have it.
After a bit of investigation I found that the rear trailing coil pack was only one firing, and by this time it was getting late so I decided down tools and go home.
The next day I went down to fix it, when I was cranking it, it did not show any attempt to fire, it just cranked over and over.
Whilst cranking the engine I probed the HT leads with a spark tester pen, I found nothing coming down any of the HT leads.
I have got a 12v ignition supply to the ignighter and to all of the coil packs.
I have checked resistances from all the wires out of the coils to the ignighter and from the ignighter to the ECU, these are all ok.
Under cranking I have checked my rpm reading on my pfc and my crank sensors are working.
can any body help me out because I am running out of ideas.

You sure the immobliser isn\'t doing this? is your ECU properly connected? If the ecu isn\'t connected properly.. it won\'t even attempt to spark/fuel but the car will still turn over.

Best of luck

I removed my immobiliser yesturday and its is still the same.
my fuel system is working because i can smell it when cranking.

the next thing I need to do is plug another ecu in. any body got one I can borrow?

Make sure that you hold the throttle to the floor when you try to start it so the anti flood system kicks in and won\'t inject any more fuel so you can push out the fuel sitting in the engine :)

8 bit Fd\'s are 4 Plug (i.e. up to late 95, the 16 bit are three plug 96 on)

Am i correct in saying you have No Spark Front or rear? have a Look to see if there is Juice going in to the Coil packs? (the Coil pack Loom is usaly pluged in next to the Front plate on the Plug side of the motor)

I\'d also make sure the Ground next to the Ecu is good and there is a Good ground to the Coil Rail.

When you had it Running, was it smooth and idled ok? It sounds like some thing has come off (plug/Ground or Blown a fuse???) Does it Crank ok? And have you Put new Plugs in?

There is not spark out of any of the coil packs
I have a 12v ignition supply to all the coil packs.
All the wires from the coils to the ignighter test out ok (good continuity).
It started up fine, the idle was a little rough for a few minutes but after then it was fine.
Yes new plugs have been fitted.
It cranks ok.
I am going to have a better look at the earths tomorrow.

my last engine rebuild did this, i tried for 2 days to start it again, deflooding several times,  i eventually discovered the plugs were knackered, when you start a new engine all the vasoline and engine build products knacker the plugs, thats why engine builders usually use old plugs to start the engine for the first couple of times,  then put new ones in.

When i checked mine i took the plug out put a lead on it and there was no spark it was so knackered.

I have checked all my earths and they are ok.

There is nothing coming out of the coils to even make a spark.

I have been testing loads of wires this evening and I have found the following.

There is 12v going from the coils to the ignighter but there is nothing going from the ignigter to the ecu.
As far as I am aware there is a switched earth inside the ecu that controls the coils.
So if there is no signal from the coils then it won’t fire.
I am going to try an ignighter tomorrow and that should cure it.

Seems that there are a few people having issues with the Apexi PFC unit at the moment. I\'m one of them. lol.

I would suggest replacing your plugs though mate as antnicuk said. Shouldn\'t use new plugs on a new build - they\'ll just cake up in all of the grease and build compounds that were used in the rebuild. To say that you had it started before fine after the build and just couldn\'t start it again. I would suggest that the ends of the spark plugs have been caked in crap. Try new set of plugs before you waste time trying the more awkward, less obvious routes mate.

I took my plugs out last night and they are fine.

even if my plugs were nackerd their would still be a signal coming out my coils and down the ht leads.

my car has nothing coming out of the coil packs, so I have to look further down the line. like a possible signaling fault.

Tiger_kpt.
whats the problem with your power fc?

Four words mate.

"Water on the brain"

Read the following thread: -

Although different situations. Your problems sound similar to mine, not exact, but similar. According to Pip, a common problem with PFC\'s. God knows how water found its\' way there!

Think you dropped into WGT\'s whilst me and Fletcher off this forum were waiting for mine back. Came into collect some bits for your build I recall.

just a thought, did you plug the engine loom plug in that doesnt go to the apexi, it plugs into the car loom right up under the dash board on the passenger side, i think that one does the coils.

yes, its the white plug.

Am I rite in saying that a standard ecu will start the car even though its single turbo and all the rats nest has been removed?

I am not sure it will run with any of the Sensors unplugged? Mine ran like a Dog when i had my Stock Ecu on and ran fine with the PFC??? They like every thing conected.

But i know if you have anything other than Stock Injectors in the Primarys it won\'t run For sure.

I was just reading before a Thread about PFC\'s, did you know there has been  few with simalar Problems to you are seeing recently. Out of intrest do you have a Comander? Does it apper to be working correctly?

I am running 850cc Primarys.

yes I have comander. every thing seems to be ok on it.

I really need another power fc just to plug in.

It seems dead Weird how it was running fine one minute, then it went down to firing on one coil then the next day their was nothing, its like something is breaking down. like the ecu
