Title: after market steering wheel/bosses etc
Post by: D1 WTF on May 10, 2007, 05:12:57 PM
i am going to be fitting an after market steering wheel and snap off boss, i have heard mixed things.  the person i bought the boss off seems to think i dont need a boss (momo or simular), the quick release will just go straight on to the stock rx7 boss.
i was under the impression that i would need to get a momo boss thren bolt the quickrelease to that, then the wheel to the quick release.

the silver boss in the pic is one that came with my boss (it is cracked) as an example but apparently it is a stock rx7 one, can anyone confirm this?  cause if it is then the quick release should simply bolt to the one in my car.

the black part is the end of the quick release that needs to attach to a boss.

hope that aint too complicated, thanks in advance for any help

it looks quite alot like this, i would be inclined to think that it is an aftermarket boss
like this (http://www.evasivemotorsports.com/merchant2/graphics/interior/rapfix_short_boss.jpg)

I don\'t think that is stock Rex boss.

It is very easy to change.  You can get bosses off ebay, although I would test it first for fit.  5 min job to remove the old wheel  and try that.

how do you take wheel off.  bit of a stupid question, but airbags scare me!!!!

Post by: Joeh on May 12, 2007, 05:04:27 PM
disconnect the airbag first then otherwise it may explode on you :( ... (in extremly rare rare rareeee cases :O! )

Disconnect battery be safest.

Pull cover off wheel.

undo big nut.

Remove steering wheel !

Don\'t be scared Sam, you can do.  Do you want me to come and hold your hand ??

wait!! when you try and pull off the steering wheel make sure your not sat in the driver seat - it will pop off and bash you right in the face!

That is the correct boss. Also, when you come to take the wheel off, loosen the nut off but do not remove it from the shaftg - then when you pull the wheel off (and I recommend you use a 3 legged puller - cheap to buy from a motor factors) it won\'t ping off and smack you in the face. The loose nut will stop it.

Sorry, I thought you were wondering if it will fit an RX. It will cos it\'s the same as the 2 I\'ve seen on my car. I\'ve never seen a staqndard one though. I did have  spare but sold it a while ago.
Removing the wheel is pretty straight forward, so you could just pull the wheel, then see if the quick release fits. If it doesn\'t you can fit the standard wheel back on for now.

When pulling the steering wheel, just remove the horn button or horn shroud, then remove the 21mm (usually 21mm) nut in the centre till its only on by a few threads then pull on one side of the steering wheel whilest pullung the oposite side in and out, when the steering wheel pops off the nut will stop it from knocking you out :D
I change about 2 steering wheels a week on MX5\'s and 1 out of 10 makes me pull my back as they take just about every bit of effort to remove them.
Rember you have to pull real real hard thats why you leave the nut on a few threads.

If you have an airbag then the procedure is a little different.

Looking to do a similar job myself but I have a question......

Quote from: strange_days_ukPull cover off wheel.

Mine doesn\'t seem to want to come off.
I have an airbag/original wheel setup to come off.
Do I have to undo the nuts on the back of the wheel
that are covered by the little rubber seals?
If so progress is going to be limited by the loaning
out of my torque wrench set.

Do you have an airbag ?

If not then remove the 3 10mm nuts at the back of your steering wheel and then follow the instructions i posted a few back.

If you have an airbag you need to undo the 4 10mm bolts behind the wheel, then the cover will come off.

Yeah I do have an airbag.
I\'ll have to get my torque wrench back before I can
get those nuts outta there unfortunately.
Once thats done, what do I do with the airbag?
Just pull it out and then on to the big nut?

You need to disconnect the battry then depress the brake peddle for 30 second to fully discharge the electical system, Airbags have been known to go off whist removal, then follow the instructions.

You could come across a few problems changeing a steering wheel from airbag to none airbag.
1.You may find you dont have a steering wheel boss as most wheels with airbags have the boss incoperated to the steering wheel, so you will need a seperate boss for the new wheel.
2.When you remove the airbag your airbag light may stay on and the easyest way to get it to go off is remove the bulb.
3.Lastly you will prolly have a coilspring (think thats what its called) behind the steering wheel that will be inset into your steering wheel shroud cover and the new boss will not cover it.
4.Oh and lastly lasty your indicator cancalors may not work.

There are manny variations in steering wheels so my instructions may vary.

The incdicator cancelling should be ok. There is a purple plastc ring within the stalk body and that still hooks into an aftermarket boss like those in the pictures.
I\'d pop over and sort it for you if you were closer - it is easy once you\'ve done it once.

Sam.....Bring it down with you when you come to help install the fuel system.

We can do your steering boss after that??

You dont want to trust that Tony....he just comes down and steels your seat bolts ;)

Tony, you wouldn\'t happen to have the instructions for that boss still
would you? There\'s lots of gasket type things in the box and I\'ve got
no idea which order they go in!
