Hi Guys,
I\'ve been a rex owner for 18months now, I\'ve done that annoying list that we all have to sort so now I\'m thinking of upgrading.
I\'ve got...
Standard Jap ecu
Standard air intake & filter - to be replaced with K&N oem filter
De-catted 4" ss exhaust
Blitz BOV
I\'m want to keep it fairly standard but want a bit of extra power, should I repalce the ecu or consider something else? I also have a computer in my car for music), does anyone know of an ecu that can be programmed by software rather than an additional unit like the apexi?
Also I\'m thinking of removing the BOV and reconnecting to the air filter, can I anyone convince me that I should keep it for performance reasons?
Nic
Apexi is a complete ECU which is programmable not an additional unit.
I have some strange ECU which is purple which allows you to connect a laptop to it on Serial cable and program and monitor everything.. but APEXi ECU is better in my opinion.
BOV should be as close to the turbos as possible... or on intercooler piping.. never heard about it being fitted on the air filter piping.. ?! err.. lol...
You\'ll get more power from changing your ECU and getting your car remapped then most mods.. most likely your jap ecu has already been mapped for high ron fuel (100ron) and higher boost.. but could cause detonation if thats the case... because the fuel is not easily available here.. I think Shell vPower is not even 100ron. anyway :O!
Keep your BOV where it is.. it helps save your turbos slightly :o

Shagged turbo\'s after a few miles due to back pressure and turbo stall.... the result of not having a dumpvalve. That enough??
I think what Rocho is asking can he reconnect the bov to the original air box, which is as it comes from factory so no problems.
If my interp is correct
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh so translation; "Im thinking of going back to recirculating instead of venting to atmosphere"
In that case Rocho, yes do it.
Yes that is what I\'m thinking of doing with the BOV, sorry I forgot you can\'t read my mind. But you\'ve not really answered my question, I\'m I better off keeping the BOV or re-connecting back to the OEM air filter to recirculate. When the BOV is venting, it would be venting a mixture of un-burnt fuel + air which surly would be better being fed back in? Or is that not how it works?
Joeh, any idea what the make of that ECU is? That is what I\'m after, an ECU that can output all the stats in real time to the computer (just as a gimic for my LCD screen) I didn\'t fancy having something like the commander flopping around when I\'ve already got the computer plumbed in.
hiya mate noticed you were in derbyshire , where abouts you at if you dont mind me asking , the bov is a personal thing really cause yours will be fitted with a standard bosch type recirulating valve to each turbo so its a case of if you want the whooooosh or the wastegate style chatter (providing you have aftermarket filters) that is ??
I live in South Normanton just off J28. Do you know of any meets thats going off round here?
As for the BOV I just fancy seeing if she runs any differently when connected as it should be. Twice I got round to it and thought nah I\'ll go for a ride and have some fun instead.
oh right not to far then , nagh not many meets round here but keep ya eyes open cause we sometimes have a meet up , in fact there is a show this sunday if you fancy it ? few of us are heading up there for the unofficial mrc stand at the rising sun jap shop near leeds !
wont make any odds at all mate its just if you like the noise or not ??? personally im
p tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh all the way :0)
I\'m thinking of going to Santa Pod this weekend and having a go on the strip. I\'ll bear it in mind though, cheers.

In a situation where a vehicle has a mass air flow meter, i would say yes a recirculating is the best option as your venting off metered air, which would cause your car to run lean when changing gear or backing off from hard acceleration. The rx7 however doesnt have an airflow meter, instead uses a map sensor which measures the exhaust fume content. Therefore venting or unventing wouldnt make a performance/maintenance better. Purely down to wether you like the noise or not?.... Hope thats been abit of help.
Thanks Kevin. Thats exactly what I wanted to know.
Diverting back to the ecu, I\'ve found this...

Bacially does exactly what I want. Has anyone used this before? I\'ve just got one concern, having the PC always connected to the ecu whilst driving then mix in windows crashing or some other fu, is there any risk in this situation? I will of course only be using it for monitoring but still I think you may see where I\'m comming from?
just had a glance over that site and isnt that just an extra to go ontop of the Apexi rather than an actual ECU.
Another Derbyshire man. welcome matey, :wave

How do?
Are there any meets going on round here that you know of?
I occasionally meet up with the FTO boys, want to join us sometime?

Yep, that\'s the baby.
That\'s what most tuners use to tuner the Rex\'s... trouble is, its expensive.
What computer set up have you got?
You can monitor the ECU\'s settings in real time (up to eight at anyone time as it has eight data channels)
You can also write back any changes you wish to make, for tuning purposes... but as i say, it costs a fair bit.
I\'ve now got in and working fine (this is an old post) I haven\'t use it for tuning, she is just running on the base map and will be tuned by WGT in two weeks. After that the next upgrade will be a lambada sensor (hopefully one that can also talk to the computer) so that I can start tweaking her myself.
I\'ve got a mini-dell pc hooked up to an lcd touch screen.

If you go to past meetings you can see my rx on the pics, the matt black one with huge rear wing.
Let me know if you wanna convoy down for Rotorstock buddy, sunday 12th August, am gonna put a thread up in the convoy section shortly.
Kev - did you not sell your FD then matey ??
