Title: wheel stud removal
Post by: mosguido on May 07, 2007, 09:30:13 AM
Hey,

Just a quick question, what is the process for removing a wheel stud (so it can be replaced or rethreaded).. I have been reading quite a few sites, some say it needs to be pressed out? Otherss say a varying amount of other methods..
What is the correct one? I have an FC if that helps..

If it does require some sort of pressing or whatever ( i have no idea what that is!), what does that involve and is it something i can do at home with normal tools?

Cheers

They do not need to be pressed out. once you have striped the area down to the hubs, brakes, calipers, discs off etc, You can tap the old or damaged ones out or loose with a meaty hammer. Once they are loose you push them out etc. Then tap the new ones in then when you tighten up the wheel it will pull the new studs into place.

You should NOT try and remove the stud with the hub still on the car!

When banging away with your \'meaty hammer\' you could damage the bearings.

Remove the hub and bang away to your hearts content, or until the stud is removed. ;)

I\'m widening the front by 10mm and the rear by 20mm due to arch extensions - does anyone know a good source of lengthened studs ?

Will need the spacers too but read that thread already !

Cheers.
