Title: Can i adjust my boost manually?
Post by: Gman on January 17, 2004, 10:13:05 AM
Have a broken hand controller for my pfc and want to lower the boost to stop me taking off!

Untill you get a replacement commander I would suggest putting a restriction in yer exhaust - maybe replace the cat for the time being? 1.3 sounds very high - you on stock twins?

As far as i know i\'m on stock twins.  It doesnt spike to 1.3 at steady boost but only climbs when i give it some during the first turbo cycle.  Is it possible for the 2nd turbo to start before the first has finished?

Being a bit dense when it comes to engines and exhausts i dont have anything to put in my exhaust apart from the Bung at the end.  (the import company stated exhaust as aftermarket - could be an HKS system)

The bung *will* help a bit. If you dont want to be rebuilding it next week you need to keep out of WOT enough to stay<1bar. The stock fuel system is not near able to fuel consistently for 1.3bar. And the stock turbos wont last too long be wrung out like that day in day out. If youve not damaged any thing already you\'re lucky and should give the poor thing a break. 1.3bar is nearly twice stock boost - without a lot of mods you are only gonna end up one place; moaning how crap Rotors are whilst sat at you preferred Rotary builders paying £3K+ for a rebuild...

I\'m not scare-mongering mate, LOADS of motors have popped with far less abuse. Keep driving it at 1.3bar and sooner or later (I\'d bet sooner) you\'ll do a feck load of damage. I\'ve seen a couple of engines that have dropped seals or had a rotor touch at 1.2bar+ at high rpms; rebuilding these isnt cheap, you\'ll basically be chucking the remnants of your motor in the bin and starting from scratch. And thats A LOT of cash in parts!!!

Take it easy dude!

I agree with you Rich:D  Might be a good idear to ring your prefurred tuner [will have to be a rotary expert] and get them to remap the ecu, they can do this with either thier own commander or preferably with Datalogin. Do you know what other mods have been done? - Like injector size, fuel pump ect.

I certainly have been taking it easy and not abusing it! - thats the problem, when i want to overtake i have my eyes clued on the boost gauge and nothing else!  It has only boosted to 1.3 bar once and more than 1 bar a couple of times due to my careful driving but i know i\'m not getting the full joy of my car:(

So hopefully i have not done any damage yet and at more than 0.9 the fuel cut thingy kicks in so i dont go any faster anyway!

Dude, fuel cut isnt a good thing either!

What exhaust system do you have???

Reason I ask is if the Power FC gets more than a little over the boost its set for it will fuel cut. And as youre getting fuel cut it must be set pretty stock boost-wise. I dont think a Commander is gonna be enough to sort this out, you need some one with Datalogit I think so you can play about with w/g duty (dont think you can do this with the commander, max?).

Even this may not be enough though. I think the exhaust is the problem may be; too little back pressure for the stock wastegate to cope with. Adding back pressure may be your only solution.

First though, get the car to a Rotary guy who can look at the map and play about with it with Datalogit. Soon :)

If i put the bung in the exhaust will that add pressure?

To be honest i dont know what exhaust i have, could be an HKS one.

Will hopefully take it to Nemesis later this week - there the only people remotley close to me.

Yep, a bit. It did on my old Apexi system. Probably make a not very pleasant noise but grin and bare it until you get a Rotary guy to look at the car.

Do Nemesis have Datalogic? Was the exhaust supplied and fitted after the ECU?
Did your supplier give you a list of what had been done to the engine - it is always a worry buying a modded car. With the Apexi it is not always possible to regulate the boost pressure enough and might be you need a full on boost controler. You need to get the car to an expert asap.

ECU and Exhaust were fitted in Japan.  Nemesis do have Datalogic but i may see if i can take it to Max.

The Mods were HKS hardpipe kit, \'aftermarket exhaust\' and the ECU.

So the car has come over from Japan and not been re-mapped for UK fuel ect.  Is your exhaust system loud, very loud or ear bleeding loud:D. Without any back pressure through the exhaust it is very difficult to control boost spike. Do you know what your boost pattern is ie standard is 10:7:10 max should be 15:12:15 [psi]?
If you have an upped boost setting you should be looking at bigger injectors and fuel pump.
Hope this helps

Gman, just out of interest have you spoke to Nemesis, just I went there a few months ago to have some parts fitted, enquired about getting the ECU mapped but they said they didnt have the neccesary gear and suggested WGT (who i used).

Unless youve just asked them to alter the boost and not full re-map..?

Just been at Jasons (T2rew) most of the afternoon, he was helping fix my induction kit.  Whilst i was there we took the fuel cut box out as it didnt really need to be there and put my bung in my Exhaust.  And wow what a difference this has made, no over boost, no fuel cut just a very smooth very fast car maxing at about 0.7/0.8 bar.  My theory is that taking the fuel cut off the PFC allowed it to remap itself and now i have some half decent settings.

I will still get in mapped as i have a de-cat exhaust.   Nemesis said they can have a look but wont be able to do a full map so i will take it to someone from here.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and special thanks to Jason for sorting it out.

Heres to fast, happy, no overboosting driving  :cheers
