Title: Just fittet a new clutch, but I have a problem...
Post by: Aikio on May 03, 2007, 05:49:56 PM
Hi.

I just fitted a new clutch on my 92\' FD but when I was starting up, it wouldn\'t get into any gear. When I look through the inspection hatch on the box everything seems to be working, the diafram(?) pulls out as it\'s supposed to, but it seems like the lamell plate doesn\'t release so the clutch is constantly on.

The pedal has a constant pressure when I step on it, and it pops right back out when I release it.

Is there anywhere I can adjust the clutch or something?

like here?:

sorry about the bad english. I\'m not that good at technical english...

make sure the rod between slave cylinder and clutch arm is situated in arm properly it can miss the dent and cause this problem.just release slave cylinder to check

The other thing it could be is you have put the clutch plate in the wrong way around!!!

I certantly don\'t hope thats what I\'ve done wrong, because this is the worst thing I\'ve ever done with a car... I\'ve never had this much scrapes and stuff on my hands and arms in my life :P

so i vented the clutch today, and adjusted the pedal so now everything feels right, but I still couldn\'t get it into gear.

And since the back wheels isn\'t on the ground, I started it up in first gear... this in it self worked out ok. and now I could put it into every gear i wanted. But when I stepped on the clutch and pressed on the brakes I could hear the clutch plate sliding on metal. Then I stopped the car immediately.

I don\'t know exactly how the clutch is supposed to work, but when I\'m not stepping on the clutch the clutch plate is pressed onto the flywheel, and when I watch through the inspection hatch and the clutch is stepped on, the clutch plate is in contact with the clutch housing (?). Is that the way it\'s supposed to be? since it\'s not working I\'m guessing thats not how it\'s supposed to work :P

Any input would be appreciated!!!

Morten..

think jonofd3 is right sounds like plate is wrong way round. if your getting metal to metal theres not much else it could be. its not what i suggested earlyer as that has different symptoms. on the up side its much easier 2nd time. Phil

just read my reply and it looks a bit cheeky at the end but wasn\'t meant to be. its a bummer but realy the box has to come back out to inspect damage if any. but you would be suprised how much quicker it will be. keep in touch with progress cheers Phil.

Hi Morten, sorry to hear you are having problems.

I have a couple of questions so we can try and help you,

If you bolted the center plate and the pressure plate onto the flywheel did you then clip the release bearing to the pressure plate after fitting the gear box?

Have you fitted a race type clutch ?, if so the clutch arm (fork) in the gearbox may have bent.

Get someone to operate the clutch pedal while you look into the bell-housing and you will see if the "snap ring" has connected the pressure plate to the release bearing properly

As you will have found these clutches are "pull type" and the arm pulls away from the flywheel and does not "push" into the pressure plate like other clutches.

I get this sometimes with my clutch, works about 80% of the time but then for some reason it wont shift into 1st (unless i bang it in) and i get the same sound you get...

Well... I didn\'t have a center alignment tool, so we fitted the pressure plate, and the center plate on to the gearbox first, then we fitted the box, and then I fitted the pressure plate through the inspection hatch/bell housing thing under the box.

I\'ve got a friend of mine that just said to me that it might be that the center plate is just a bit to fat? and that I just need to drive the car a bit?

The clutch looks standard, and it\'s a ACT clutch. http://www.gothamracing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=100_443_107_111_190&products_id=292 (http://www.gothamracing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=100_443_107_111_190&products_id=292)

This one I think...

and the snap ring works as i should...

I suggest that maybe the pilot ( spigot ) bearing may be faulty, probably damaged and is now binding on the shaft.  I reckon this could be Kieron\'s problem, too.

If you are certain the snap ring is still connected and it is operating the pressure plate then sorry but you will have to take the gearbox out again.

Look at the clutch fork if you take the gear box out and look where the dowel holes are and look for cracking and see if the fork is bent.

As Martin says it could be a collapsed spigot bearing but normally if needle rollers have fallen out the gear-box to engines faces do not meet properly and you have to force the bolts to get them to pull the gear-box in.

Also where its only a small bearing it tends still go into gear but "drags" and then kills the gear-box quickly as the spigot shaft is unsupported.

If you find nothing obvious after this I would suggest that you look carefully at the clutch assembly itself because unfortunatly ACT are quite poor re-manufactured clutches made from old units.

never ever heard of plate being to fat. and would you want something that badly designed fitted to your car if it was. DONT drive your car as you will just cause more damage. take your gearbox backout and save yourself more headaches and expense. also when you were lifting gearbox with cover attached to bearing this could cause damage to parts and i would recomend you fit onto flywheel first. even if you have to line it up by eye. but its upto you. cheers Phil. By the sound of it I think my verdict earlyer is spot on, as one way the clutch plate has the clutch friction plate to the flywheel & the wrong way the centre spline presses against the flywheel........ which is why you got a metal grinding noise when you pressed the clutch & break together!!!

your right Jono. this is easy to spot when you fit to flywheel but easy missed when fitting this way. Phil

So... the box is on the ground, and the clutch is of, and the clutch friction plate was mounted the wrong way..

So I\'ll be killing a good friend of mine within the next week :P

But...

One of the bolts to the clutch had destroyed the hole (not sure what the word is, but where you screw the bolt onto the flywheel) so I can\'t do anything before I get my lightened flywheel, and It should have been here about 2 weeks ago...

I\'ll get some pictures up later tonight, as I need to get some advice about the part of the center on the clutch friction plate that has been grinding onto the clutch housing... From what I could tell It wouldn\'t have anything t say, but I\'m not exactly an expert on the subject, so I was hoping you could help me...

Morten.

Here is a pic of the damage on the flywheel.

And does this have anything to say when I reinstall the clutch?
