Hi Bob,:wave

Over the weekend i tried to do the modification that you had done here http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25031 to the fans and Relay No. 3. I bought a lower temperature fan switch rated at 90 and ran a single wire from here to relay no. 3.

However, the fans do not come on. Do you have a wire colour(s) off that relay 3 or a picture that you could take to help me out as to why my mod is not working. It may be that i have run the wire to the wrong terminal on the relay?

Hope you can help please!

ASH  IT\'S  the small green wire (/black stripe ) to connect to COIL,( relay no 3 )This is the one from the Thermoswitch, you could also link another wire to this at the relay, wire it to the cabin to one side of a switch, the other side from the switch to earth to switch on the fan, without having AC on, if you get stuck, my mobile is 07799523900 you need to be sure the Thermoswitch is working! what one did you get? i think i have one.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the info, which one is the no. 3 relay if you are looking from the front of the car, just need to make sure. I also need to check the thermoswitch (i bought one off ebay rated at 90 degrees for a Turbo 11 RX7) as i think that i may have shorted it on the installation by mistake - hope not.

If you have a spare one rated at 90, i may need it ;)

I will have a look tomorrow evening, if i do get stuck if its ok i shall give you a shout on your mobile - thanks again!

Bob and anyone that maybe able to help...

I found the green wire with black stripe, removed it and placed the wire direct from the switch to the relay. Then i switched the Ignition on and the fans came on straight away??

How does the switch work? From the readings i took off the green/black wire is that the wire has a positive voltage, so why does the switch pull the relay when i have not even run the engine??

If the switch is knackered, would it send the wrong signal???

Cheers

Ash the Thermoswitch completes a circuit to earth only when the engine reaches the  temp it\'s rated at. or should do! sounds like a faulty switch,
there should be no continuity between the single wire terminal on switch and it\'s metal body when cold, what switch do you have?

Hi Bob,

I bought this switch from here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=200073161406&rd=1&rd=1 however, when i went to tighten the switch i got a spark fly off it from the spanner i had touched it with (forgot the battery was still connected - school boy error:Nono! ) the spanner touched i think the stat housing and switch - could the switch be blown, or have i bought the wrong switch??

Ash i don\'t think there should be any supply to that switch with the ig off! so not sure why you got a spark, have you got a multimeter/continuity tester? something wrong somewhere for that to happen, so start by unpluging the relay no 3 and see if you have continuity between small green wire,  black stripe, (relay end) and any metalwork on the engine, if you have then either the switch is a normally closed type ( should be normally open ) or faulty, let me know the result, phone if you like,

Update:

Fans now work when engine water temp reaches that written on the switch :driving . It turns out that the switches i had bought were normally closed and the original switch is normally open. Then when it reaches approx. 108 degrees it closes and then completes the circuit to bring in the fans.

It actually turned out to be a broken wire, so i fitted the original switch back in place and ran an independent wire (as per ro284\'s) and it all work\'s lovely now!

Cheers Bob :cheers
