Title: Drained battery after flooding
Post by: k.j on May 01, 2007, 09:28:53 AM
I have a \'93 RX-7 twin turbo and the other day I flooded it. My fault, I know. I did all the usual, removed the plenum air intake, the EGI relay (I damaged the case for this getting it out) and the EGI fuse. Removed plugs and cranked it over. To cut a long story short, had to get a tow to get her started. Lots of blue smoke as expected, but after giving her a good run, it started popping and banging when I put my foot down.

Fair enough, thought it was just burning off excess fuel, but the next day, the battery was flat. Charged it up and checked for any current drain. Was pulling about 2 amps with nothing on. I mean nothing at all. Gave it another run, same as before with the popping on stiff acceleration, left again overnight and a flat battery greeted me. Was reading about 2 volts.

Anyone got any ideas what might be causing this drain before I go buy another battery? Don\'t want the same to happen again. Also, do you have to replace the seal on the plenum after taking it off for access to the plugs? Can I use a sealant or something?

Last folks, I stay in the Isle of Skye, can anyone reccommend a good Mazda dealer in Inverness or Aberdeen for an engine rebuild. She\'s got about 98k on the clock.

Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

I doubt its anything related to rebuild... you probably poped out a few vacuum hoses by accident when removing /moving the plenum. Google the vacuum diagram and go check it over when you have time.

In regard to the battery dieing fast, I would expect you have some type of short circuit or always on item (lights?). Try removing the fuses from the fuse box of certain features of the car such as radio etc and see if the battery lasts.... if it does, do elimination thing, add a fuse for every day, and if the battery doesn\'t die its not related to that circuit... sorry for saying but its a bitchy long process. Once you know the circuit, you know where to look.

Alternatively, inspect as much as you can. The only wires connected to the shell would be negative/earth cables, anything looking dodgy, take a picture and show us and we can tell you if thats right or not :O

Apart from that all I can say is good luck :)

Get your battery tested, or put it on a overnight trickle charge,  could of damaged it, letting it go so flat :)

Thanks for the replies lads. Yeah, kinda guessed I would have to check the fuses etc. Crap I know, but it was of my own doing.
This website is excellent for anything Mazda related. It\'s really good to know there are other people out there pitching for you. Many thanks to all.

I had the dead battery problem a couple of years ago.  In my naievity, I just replaced the battery thinking it was dead.  The new battery then died.  I then began removing fuses.  It still happened.  The only thing left was the alarm and tracker, so I contacted the company responsible for them and they immeadiately informed me that the system I had was not good at power saving and they replaced it the next week - problem solved.  During the issue, I bought 2 batteries and a trickle charger which I use all the time now anyway because I don\'t know when I\'ll next use the car.

Now, in the last 2 weeks, my battery has been dying very quickly.  Left off the trickle charger for 2 nights and it was dead and needed a jump start.  Even being on the charger it struggles to spark.  I\'m hoping that it is just the  battery needs replacing due to constant trickle charging (3 years) as nothing else has changed.  I\'ll find out for sure next week when I have it looked over.

Thanks ChrisBoid,
I\'m gonna check the fuses, connections, everything on planet Earth to try and suss what the problem is here. Have been looking at a few threads on your web site and it seems lots of RX-7 owners have had this problem.
Like you, I\'m loath to go and buy another battery until i figure out this problem. Do ya know how to disable the standard alarm/imobiliser? Mines works (after a fashion) the indicators flash, but no alarm audio/siren.

Thanks for your reply mate.

I\'m not sure it can be disabled as that would present a security hole.

Oddly, my alarm stopped making a sound when arming/disarming ages ago.  It is an option on the alarm but following the instructions I was unable to turn the audible beep noise back on.  As I actuallly prefer it silent I didn\'t chase the problem.

When I tried to start my car the other day and the battery was flat, the alarm went off (thinks it is trying to be bypassed).  Now the audible beep has returned when arming/disarming.  I have no idea what is causing that behaviour!

Is gone back to default mode,  instruction book should tell you how to turn beep off/on

Agreed, but I don\'t know what happened to silence the beep in the first place.

When the alarm is fitted it comes from the factory in default mode,  IE alarm beep off,  when guy comes to fit it, he programmes it to beep when turned on/off,   because the battery has gone flat,  it resets to DEFAULT mode :)

When u try to start it with battery low, it causes it to do this,  if u take the battery off, and put it back on,  it doesnt do it. :)

My experience isn\'t quite consistent with that.  One day the beeping just stopped and it didn\'t coincide with the battery going flat.  However, once the battery went flat and the alarm reset itself, the beep came back.  Perhaps I fluked turning the beep off?

Either way, what your saying makes sense and I am not worried about it :)
