The vert finally made it to the "new" bodyshop last Thursday; they haven\'t actually started work on it yet but went over the car with a magnifying glass to determine as to what needs doing. And that list is getting longer by the day.
So far, it looks like:
- Strip all the stonechip that the previous bodyshop applied. The quality of the application is awful and there are signs that it wasn\'t prepped properly underneath. That\'ll be the bottom 6 inches of the car paintless then.
- Undoing and re-doing the sill repair, but then even the MOT tester knows about that
- The newly applied paint on the top half of driver\'s side rear wing has to come off (well, I insisted after they said it wasn\'t applied that well), the rear wheelarch there is developing a little rust which they\'ll cut out and replace so the whole wing and part of the door need painting
- Top of the windscreen frame has a couple of stonechips in that want cleaning and painting
- They discovered that the hood (about a year old) has a hole/tear in it on the driver\'s side. They\'re getting someone in to look at that as well...
- Some of the "straightened" bits like the bottom of the driver\'s door aren\'t so need redoing
I\'ve asked them how much of the car would be wearing its original paint afterwards, if it turns out to be less than 50% I guess I should be enquiring about the cost difference to a full respray...
This "doing things properly" attitude seems to be bad for my wallet again.
blimey - sounds a fair bit of work !!
should be a nice car once they finish though :D

Yup, and it keeps getting worse - I think that\'s the issue with engaging people who know what they\'re doing...
I\'ve quietly asked them how much of the car they\'d expect to strip to work out how close to full respray territory we\'re getting now.

I would blimmin\' well hope so!
Nice to hear of no short cuts and a car really being looked after
Indeed. I\'d be interested in their details if you\'re happy to recommend them once the job\'s done.
cheers,
Steve
i was thinking that aswell !!
i need the front bumper on the cab respraying :D
Yep, if/when I\'m happy with the work I\'ll be happy to pass on their details...
Stu - don\'t even thing about that!
I "just" wanted a hole and a scab in the bodywork sorted and now we\'re talking about respraying half the car.
good luck with mate...
if they are any good at repairing the hood then id be interested in the company details.
They mentioned they were going to have a mate of theirs look at the hood as I don\'t think they do upholstery. Not sure if they do that as a favour for me or if they use this guy from time to time as he supposedly has a day job...
That said, once I know what\'s what, I\'ll let you know.
And the latest good news from the bodyshop:
They have found a panel that doesn\'t need work or paint! :Thumbsup!
That\'ll be the bootlid then. Every other panel on the car needs paint, at least partially so this is beginning to look like a full respray by now. Probably even windscreen-out job as they\'ve found some rust on the windscreen surround that may not be fixable with the screen in situ.
I better have a liedown, I\'m feeling slighty queasy.
oohhh , open wallet surgery then
And another progress update...
The good news is that the hood\'s OK - they had a look a grinder\'s cab (thanks mate) and confirmed that what they thought was damage to the roof was in fact, normal.
In contrast to what they initially thought, every panel on the car needed work and the windscreen had to come out, too. Apparently they found something rather nasty lurking underneath there, so I\'m kinda glad they did take it out despite me being a bit apprehensive about that.
The quality of the previous "repair" was deemed "interesting" - under the badly applied stonechip they found several layers of uncured primer, plus it turned out that bottom of the driver\'s door (that the previous bodyshop was supposed to straighten) wasn\'t exactly straight, either. Oh well, all of that crap is gone, they repaired some more rust damage that they found while the car is partially dismantled for the work as well so it should be good for years to come.
And even before they started I had decided that I was going to go for the full respray option - at the end of the day they would\'ve had to spend so much time blending in the repairs that the fully monty turned out to be the better option.
glad you are getting progress
the chap who came down to look at the cab seemed pretty cool and knew what he was talking about :D
Wahay! It\'s now MOT\'d and I shall journey to Bolton tomorrow to pick it up.
thats great news matey :D :D :D :D

I\'ll disclose that once I\'ve had a chance to check out the car - mind ewe, I\'ve paid their bill before seeing the car :). Nothing funny going on, it\'s just that I\'m not going to recommend anybody without checking out the quality of their work firsthand.
Especially after the disaster with the first bodyshop who came highly recommended by another member.
I\'m pretty fussy about bodywork but I think for once I got out-fussed by a considerable margin. So that\'s a good sign then.

Didn\'t know that, but knew that Grinder was close...
Not after recommendation m8, just curios cos i live in Bolton , and know a few body shops ;)

Furrynuff. You\'ve got a PM.
God, I\'m knackered - been away 13 hours to pick it up.
The paintwork is of stunning quality (which it blimmin\' well should be, given that there are four coats of white and two coats clear on the car) and it looks like new (or better).
Unfortunately the comparison with the FD suggests that the dampers are even more tired than I thought they were...
*sigh*
More expense...
PS: Apologies to the "near Bolton" contingent (especially Grinder) - as I had to take the train up instead of the plane as planned, there was barely enough time to collect the car, let alone meet up with anybody. Sorry about that.
Glad you got it back OK Timo. Sounds like they have done a decent job of it. Post Pics! ;)
Curios as to why u had it painted in Bolton, I do know he his a very good sprayer, ?
Mick
@ Kermit - I\'ve got some in-progress pics and will try to take some of the finished article tomorrow as I need them for the changed insurance valuation anyway.
@Mobilemick - bit of a long story, but the short version is that one of the guys at Sprayteck (Kev) is a mate of mine, mostly due to the fact that we\'re both bikers. After the hassle and aggro I had with the previous bodyshop I didn\'t fancy my chances down here again so after talking to a few mutual biking mates who had work done there, I decided that I\'d get good job done by them. Not to mention that I usually prefer to go to people I know to have work done that I can\'t do myself.
dont worry about not calling matey - im sure i will see it as RS4 :D
Actually, as I may be in the UK for RS4, I might attend after all.
And here\'s two pictures of the finished article, taking earlier today:

The pictures don\'t quite do it justice but give you an idea just how gleaming it is.
Looking sweet. All the trouble has been worth it in the end.

oohhhhh very very nice :D
