Title: Evo-Stik Liquid Metal
Post by: RedRummy on April 21, 2007, 02:00:32 PM
Hi,

Is Evo-Stik Liquid Metal  (http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp;jsessionid=BXDPYLZ2MMKAECSTHZPCFFQ?id=22533&slotName=null&homeRef=&cm_re=CROSS_SELL-_-SLOT3-_-22533&catId=PRODUCT_DETAILS&ts=60131&destination=/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp%3Fid%3D22533%26slotName%3Dnull%26homeRef%3D#) suitable for bonding metals together that could reach high temperatures?

I need to do a quick redimentary fix on my exhaust heat sheild... (it has a long crack caused by the high temps in that area)

I thought I\'d try an used some Evo-Stik Liquid Metal to bond the two sides together...

I can find virtually no information about the properties of the stuff - the tube it comes in says very little, other than "sticks metal to metal, permanently". No warning labels, no flammable labels.

It seems to have worked ok, but I\'m a little bit afraid of it catching light if it gets too hot...

The only info I could find really, was a post on the Land Rover forum where they\'re saying its great, but no mention of if it can be used for metals that get hot.

:xconfused

Good plan, with only one minor drawback...

Most people I know, know even less about cars than I do..  :rollin

Funnily enough, the liquid metal stuff says you can use it instead of welding  :Thumbs-up

is it off the car? what is it made of (stainless or mild steel or aluminium?) and which heat sheild is it ? on the manifold or is down the exhaust system somewhere?

For something that gets as hot as an exhaust I don\'t think epoxy of any sort will be anywhere near as good as a weld

yeah, its off the car, and i\'ve already stuck it with Liquid Metal... it was seeing ti dry that made me think it might be dodgy...

my original thread is here (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37160)...

it functioned fine when on the car, it just rubbed and squeaked as I went over bumps..

trouble is, if now covered it in liquid metal dunk, so I\'d prolly have to get a new one if it didn\'t work...

dufuss :Hammer

if it\'s just the one for the back box stick in back in and i am sure it will be OK, it\'s not that hot in that area at all really and it\'s not that close to the silencer anyway

Used liquid metal on my old VW Polo, the head gasket had gone and to save time and money getting the head skimmed me and the bruv used this with great results. Had the car for about 2 months after doing the job and it was still holding together. Put the car up for sale, you know the old get rid quick trick:2eek , anyway not sure if the new owner has had any problems. Sold as seen is a great way of getting rid of cars:Giggle . Give it a go it may work hth.......cheers Leigh.

well, it seems to have worked just fine...

Went for a spin today for about an hour, and there was no smoke etc ;)

Looking at it, it still seems intact and not melted or charred.

It has an odd texture when set, its like rubber... but its made of two metals.

Though I think this stuff goes in the same bodge category as Gaffer Tape  :D
