Title: Changing an oil cooler pipe... how easy is it?
Post by: Jim_rx7 on April 19, 2007, 07:54:24 AM

This pipe from my drivers side oil cooler has split. I need to source a new one and swap it over.

Anyone any idea how easy it is to replace? The oil cooler side shouldn\'t be too difficult (I wouldn\'t think so anyway).

But where does the other end go, and how easy is it to get access to it and remove it? Will it be stuck on stupid tight??? :2Confused

Any help appreciated... also if anyone knows where I can get another pipe?? (I will post a request in the wanted section also).

Finally, some rx7s only have one oil cooler. Is it possible to easily convert mine to only run with one? (if it\'s easier than changing the pipe). Or would it be advised to simply source the needed pipe.

should be easy enough - just had a look on mine. The drivers side oil cooler pipe goes to the block under the aircon pump (not on my car in this photo).

It is the one nearer the pulley.

The other pipe on the oil cooler runs across the car (under the cross member beneath the AST, etc) and feeds the other oil cooler (presuming yours has twins!)

Hope that helps,

Tony

Yeah... it has twins.

So is the pipe I\'m replacing going to the block or the other oil cooler?

I can\'t tell from your pics which one has split. Best bet is to have a look at the car, if you remove the undertray you will be able to follw the pipe back easily.

My advise it don\'t loose the Clip :) The Clip holding the Engine section of the pipe to the Oil cooler section tends to ping off if you are not ready for it (there are 5 pipes from memory from the engine to Coolers then back)

The Job is not to hard to do, The engine side Pipes are alot easyer (there is a bit of oil about so the mountings tend to come off without snapping) but all in all if you have a Jack and some WD40 its not a Bad job.

May be worth investing in some new Copper washers, but often you can reuse the old ones.

It\'s the inner pipe (if that makes sense?)

Did mine a few weeks back whilst it was on ramps.  It\'s not too hard but like everyone else has said do not lose the clip!  Drain the oil is the first job.  Then just use a small screwdriver or similar tool to spin the clip until it starts to lift then lever it out.  The pipe should just pull off then but be careful of residual oil left in the system.  The other end of the pipe should release in the same way.  When you put it all back together make sure the pipe is fully engaged before placing the clip spin it until it slots in.  Start the car and cross your fingers, mine pressurised and then i found out \'messily\' that i hadn\'t engaged one of the ends properly.  Hope this makes some sense if not i could probab;y talk you through what i mean!

Sorta makes sense.

What\'s this clip business all about? It take it it isn\'t bolted on anywhere?

The Clip is like a fast Relise type thing, the joint is below the battery.

Its realy easy to Split, just flick the Big clip off (just take it easy and watch where it goes ;))

Then once its off wiggle the Pipe and it will split, its like mazda did it to get the engine out a bit quicker :)

Clip on the oil cooler side also?

There are two clips (In and out lines) its so you can Split the Oil coolers and the Engine without having to remove the Bumper and Dirt Trays etc.

There is just one clip per pipe.

So one clip per pipe. What\'s on the other end of the pipe? A bolt to the oil cooler side?

thanks

lol, no still a clip!  The only other fixing is on the other pipe into the oil sump which had a bolt through it with a large copper washer i believe...

£30 .... lol.

A vendor suggested that these can be about £400 new!!!?

Fair enough, I bought second hand, but at the same time I asked about and this isn\'t a common part to fail. Think I was just unlucky tbh.

Ok... havnig some issues with this one!... lol

Here are my new pipes...

They are 100million times better than my old ones, so I thought I might as well just replace them all.

I\'ve removed my IC and battery/battery tray.

I\'m trying to remove the shorter pipe from the left hand side of the car (if facing it) first. I\'ve removed the clip that goes around it, but now I can\'t figure out what I\'m supposed to do!!

I\'ve pulled the pipe, tried to prise it with a screw driver... nope.

There are what looks like bolts or something?? Am I supposed to do anything with these? I\'M CONFUSED?!?!?!?!

Above is the pipe. If you look at the new ones, it\'s the shorter one coming from the left. (so you get an idea of what\'s going on).

Please?!!?!!.... what do I do now?? :D

Quote from: mazda baitThe pipe should just pull off

Actually I didn\'t try just pulling it!.. lol.

Will pull it tomorrow and see if it comes free.

PS : I got a complete set of pipes for £30 posted in mint condition! :D

I\'ve finaly managed to get the 2 pipes off both the oil coolers. It wasn\'t easy as two were seized on!!

All I\'ve got to do now is remove the piping from the hoses that come from the engine.

The two pipes, which connect to these two pipes....

The only thing is, these don\'t look in very good condition and most likely are gonna be stuck like some of the other ones were.

Here\'s one of them here....

I\'ve sprayed them in penetrating oil (can\'t find my Wd40). But does anyone have any other advice on how to get them apart if this doesn\'t work?

(I\'m gonna spray them again tomorrow and then attempt it Wednesday afternoon.)

Well I finally got the old pipes off (what a job!!!), and the new pipes on. Again, what a bluddy job!! There\'s no easy way to do it apart form putting the pipes in at one side and trying to feed them through to the other.

Hopefully they\'re all connected up tight enough!! Only time will tell.

I\'ve never had so many bits of rust etc fall into my eyes in my life!! ... lol. Oh... and coolant when I decided to move a radiator hose! ... lol.

I\'m sitting here thinking that some of the pipes might not be engages properly.

Is there anything I can do to make sure they are? I don\'t want to fill with oil, then find that a pipe leaks everywhere!! ARGH!

You can only push and wiggle so much. Is there anything you can do to help them engage? I noticed one of the connectors was full of crap that I scraped out etc, which helped. But I\'m still not convinced that they\'re engaged properly!

Is it a two man job? One person push the oil coolers towards the pipe, and the other wiggle the pipe slightly while trying to push it into place?

Definitely easier with two i should imagine.  I had one that hadn\'t engaged properly but you soon spot it when you start it up....:Laugh

Anyone fancy giving me a hand to force them in? .... :D
Title: Changing an oil cooler pipe... how easy is it?
Post by: mazda bait on May 02, 2007, 09:38:55 PM
I did find that you can be fairly heavy handed with them.  When you engage them and drop the clip in give it a real tug and push and just check the clips not trying to pop out.  I\'m afraid that\'s all the advice i can give you really, until you get pressure in the line you\'ll never know!  Just be prepared to turn it off at a moments notice!!

Best of luck to you anyway!

Well maybe more of a loud pop as the pipe came off and sent the clip flying!  But obviously the pipe was under pressure and oil went absolutely everywhere!!!  Not to scare you at all.....

oh bugger!... I can see it flying off... oil going everywhere... and me losing the clip!!... lol.

Think i might still have a couple of spare clips knocking about if worse comes to worst!  I\'m sure it\'ll be fine though.

I\'m thinking to make sure you get a 100% seal you could do the following?

The hose sits into a connector on the oil cooler which can unscrew from the oil cooler itself. So you could unscrew the connector, connect the hose and clip, then screw it onto the oil cooler? That way ensuring you get 100% seal? It should be able to spin etc, although it\'s connected to the pipe.

I\'m gonna give it a bash anyway. Will still need two people tho, so someone can push the oil cooler towards the connector/hose.

I\'ll let you know how I get on, will take some piccys too.

Nah... I think I just forgot to connect it at all!!... lmao.

I checked over the pipes connecting to the oil coolers. Put the clips in and gave them a good pull etc. I forgot the pipe that connects from the engine to the drivers side cooler!!!... lol.

I connected it up (after the massive oil leek!) and gave it a good pull. Hopefully all the rest are fine now and none are going to pop off!!!

I\'ll find out Saturday when I do it!!!
