Job for this afternoon was to get the stock exhaust off ready for the new one next week, well cat back anyway. Started by removing the insulator cover of the cat and then the bolts holding the y pipe to the cat. Then removed the two screws from the hangers holding the y pipes to the chasis.
Next went along and removed all rubber exhaust hangers, got them all too so thats not my problem. As i was doing this i proped up the cat with axle stands and the back boxes. Now the exhaust should be attached by nothing. Had a jiggle on the silencers trying to pull the exhaust to the rear of the car ie; to remove it. This is where i got too, it dont seem to wanna budge and i didnt want to yank it around incase i caused damage. This is the first exhaust i\'ve worked on so totally newb. I know stu removed his and i\'ve read the thread but theres no detailed explanation of how he got it off and i cant find any other related threads that help.
Am i missing something obvious or is there a knack to getting the y pipe to sepereate from the cat. All bolts were fine and came off without a hitch, too my amazment. Exhaust is in amazing condition too, hardly a spot of rust and boy aint it heavy. Any help appreciated
Adam
are you sure you have got all the hangers, there are two at the front end of each silencer that are quite hard to see.
It should only be a flange joint that should drop apart.
best of my knowledge there are 8 points holding it all on
1 - the 2 nuts hold it to the car ( Y pipe )
2 - there are 4 rubber bungs ( 2 on each tail pipe )
3 - 2 metal uprights just behing the silencers that go onto hoops ( these are bolted to the chassis
apart from that - that SHOULD be it
has the y pipe seperated from the cat OK ( you can pull it side ways from the cat ) or has it "welded" itself together at this point ??
Stu
Yeah got all those points covered, should be loose and ready for coming off. Just seemed that i was pulling and wiggling the tail pipes a bit much and didnt wanna cause damage to the downpipe!!
Would it be best to let the silencers rest on the floor, then have another go. At present thay are sat on boxes holding them just below where they would usually sit.
Cant quite make out if its seperated from the cat at all yet was turning dark as i got to this point. Dont think it would have welded itself on as the nuts came off withoiut a hitch and all looked fairly clean and tidy. Will have another attempt tomor afternoon. If not out with the hammer and chisel
THere may be a large amount of exhaust sealant keeping the two halves stuck together - dont be afraid to get brutal with it :yes
thats what i like to hear brett :D
Dont know if this is of any help......

Cheers Rico, helped alot, your cat looks as bad as mine lol.
Anyways had a good wiggle and tug from the back end and it dropped to the floor nicely, so all off with no damage. The new one arrived this morn....Thanks Stu :D .... And as soon as i got home i was out getting it fitted, pretty easy job really went straight on without a hitch, made a gasket from gasket paper for the cat end on the exhaust, worked nicely. Heres a pic of the old one

Cheers for ya help though, think i just need a new donwpipe and de-cat now as mine look pretty damn awful. This can wait for now though, had enough of
wiggling around on my back getting dirt in my eyes and generally being caked in grime, grease and sealant lol.
All in all 100% :D
Looks OK matey
i tried to get the selotape off the end - but it arrived like that
so what did you think of the packaging :D :D
your old one looks in good nick aswell :yes :D
The packaging was Top Notch, think parcel force couldve dropped it from the sky and it wouldve been safe lol
Yeah impressed with the state of the old one, the cat forward is another matter, think i almost put my finger through the cat\'s mid section. Bolted straight on though, shame i cant start her up :Hammer
it might not be too loud if you are still running both cats
i dont have any on mine ( hence it boosting happily to .9 bar :D )
Yeah sure it will sound just fine, once it up and running and got its MOT i\'ll sort the other end of the exhaust out, not to fussed at mo as got bigger fish to fry, ie getting it running and on the road
yeah i know what you mean :D
