Title: Injector questions
Post by: ScuttleRX on January 13, 2004, 07:29:57 PM
Have been checking the injector duty and im frequently going into 90% so think its time to uprate the fuel system, but im a bit green so if some of you guys could help me out that would be great;)
For reference current mods are: downpipe, apexi intake, cat back  exhaust, and a power fc +commander - mapped by WGT running 0.9bar          Future mods are only likely to be an intercooler, insurance is too high to go mad just yet  ;)

1/ Ive seen that there are primary and secondary injectors, are both of these normally uprated or will just changing the secondary\'s suffice

2/ How many hours labour am i likely to be looking at to get them fitted

3/ Once fitted is a re-map required? this may be a stupid question but I dont know whether they alter the fuelling or simply have a higher max fuel rate

4/ and finally, other than a fuel pump, are there any other parts of the fuel system that could do with upgrading

Think thats the lot! cheers for your help guys

Andy

oh, any UK places sell injectors?

Normal procedure is to fit bigger secondaries e.g. 1200s as these fit in the stock fuel rail. Or you can swap the stock 550 primaries for 800+

Dunno mate, couple tops, depends whats done in the end I guess?

Think yer fuel map will need looking at. The current fuel map in your ECU is set to fire your secondaries for x-milliseconds for a given rpm/load in order to achieve your chosen air/fuel ratio; if u you swap the stock injectors for bigger ones the ECU will still fire them for the same duration but as they flow more at a give rail pressure they\'ll put in too much juice and you\'ll end up richer than u want - you get the picture - you\'ll have to trim back the fuel map where the secondaries operate across the board.

4/ and finally, other than a fuel pump, are there any other parts of the fuel system that could do with upgrading
Get your self a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. Probably enough to get u out of the danger zone by upping the pressure at the rail.

Any of the specialists - check out the vendors section for a few to contact. Or ring Pip if he\'s yer local?

HTH befoer the techies get here :)

(http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/otn/wink/thumb.gif) Thanks mate, thats a great help, see what you mean about the re-map, i didnt think about it like that. Unfortuantely Pip isnt local, why i was hoping didnt need a re-map:D

just thought of another question

do the secondaries operate all the time or do they only work under heavy acceleration.

Dont know if primary/secondary refered to what sequence they inject fuel, or whether secondary injectors just supply extra fuel when needed

There is a crossover point with primary/secondary injectors, which varies depending upon boost. The more boost, the earlier the secondary\'s kick in.

During transition, the secondary\'s start before the primary\'s reduce to prevent a lean spot.

If you have an Apexi ECU, you are laughing. Put in bigger secondaries, tell the ecu the new cc of these and the ecu computes it\'s own compensation, so no need to remap. Your fuelling should remain as it was before, but your displayed duty cycle will go down, and your new capacity for fuelling will go up.

Most of the 1200/1300 cc replacements also share the same lag time as the stock 850\'s, so no need to alter any lag difference in the injector settings.

Regards

Max

Bigger secondaries it is then ;)

Cheers max

Had a feeling the Power FC might do this. Some other ECU\'s wont though and will need manual triming of the maps...

When u off back to the dyno btw mate? :D

Soon as the boat arrives from Japan with my Diff and the lads down Copnor can squeeze me in ;)

Need some good pub talk figures, I think a gentle run at 0.8 bar and 400 fly should do the trick:rollin

Sorry for the hijack

No, No, No, No!!! Water injection and 1.2bar at least :D

And if it takes out a chunk of tip I\'ll ram you in via the exhaust port to collect the shrapnel ;)

OK, 1.2 bar it is, but only for the rollers and maybe rotorstock :)

Oh, only 1.2?  you know 1.5 would be better Max :cool :D
