TBH mate, If i was you i\'d look at a slightly higher milage car with a fresh engine in it, maybe even talk to a few Rx7 rebuilders and see if there are any they would recomend to you.

I\'m not trying to put you off FD\'s but i know alot of people that have been stung  buying cars that should be ok for another 20k and wern\'t.

If you want a Good FD experiance buy a good one. Bad FD\'s can Bite you Hard and fast in the Wallet if you are not clued up when you buy one.

The main advice to you is do LOTS of reading up and ask lots of Questions. Don\'t be shy there are lots of Die hard Fd owners on here that will give you advice that will save your bank manager\'s Sleepless nights.

The car you are looking at, firstly the Milage would worry me a bit (there is a Good chance its on its first engine), As you will read everywhere get it Compression tested by a Proper Rx7 place with the correct tester (you should have 6 readings and they should all be within .2-.3 of a bar and about 7bar in a Perfect world)

If you get it to a Rx7 Garage get them to drive it round the block and tell you what they think of it! I say this becouse there is a masive diffrence between a Good tight FD and a Poor fd, a Poor FD to some one thats never driven one before feels like a normal car (but a bit knocky) a Good FD feels like a super car :) and it will put a Smile on your face every time you drive it (just watch you don\'t get Addicted ;))

even ifit has got 40k and good compression, the water seals may not be great especially on an original 10 year old engine!! Id still advise buying one thats been rebuilt properly

This is one of thoes things...... Do you chance buying a car with more than half the expected life expectancy used or look for a car with a rebuild??!!

The choice will have to be made by you my good man!!! I jumped in to the RX world from a great hight..... fell in love with a car and bough it straight away. the body work was respectable (not perfect & still isn\'t) and the engine was an unknown factor as it came from a doner car!! I got it for 4750 after a little haggeling, and 8,000 miles later she is still running like a watch. I don\'t know if I had a lucky experiance, but I\'m not complaining!! I know a rebuild is going to present itself to me one day (hopefully not too soon) so I\'m just putting money in an account one side for when the day arrives!!

Title: So I\'ve found an RX7...
Post by: N777CK T on April 19, 2007, 07:00:46 PM
OK... so i went to see another one today... they only just got it in yesterday...

Fresh Import
1997 Type-R
72,000 miles
Buddy Club P1 Alloys
Nur Spec Exhaust
Interior was in near new condition. V. good with added (apexi) gauges boost + another temp gauge
Bodywork was good - it hadnt been valeted yet though.
Panel gaps were all good

now the niggly bits... we werent allowed to test drive it because it hadnt been registered and they never register their cars until someone has bought it.

We did start it up and there was no smoke from the exhaust, the oil pressure showed up as a 4 (how good/bad is that?)
both turbos showed no signs of oil leaking etc...
obviously because its a fresh import i cant be 100% sure that its had a rebuild and although it has done just over 70kmiles the engine was very clean.

At times like this i looked at other points which would show signs of how well the car had been treated...
Now im guessing from the Tyres (Pirella Potenza something or others cost over here about £1k for a full set) that the last owner in japan had spent a lot on his car / so looked after it well...
After all if the owner buys tyres that are that expensive then surely he would have had it rebuilt??

Its up for £5,850

Now i am interested in the car as it is quite rare in white, good condition from what i could see and one of the few that are around for sale that i can put my 1996 private plate on...

Please let me know what you think? It would be a shame to miss out on this car if it has had a rebuild!

get a comp test done!

most fd engines look clean whatevere the mileage.

and if your spending nearly 6k  -  demand a test drive man
Title: So I\'ve found an RX7...
Post by: N777CK T on April 19, 2007, 07:40:02 PM
didnt know how to do a comp test - im guessing as its a fresh import they wont have done a test on it themselves.

just did a search and found that mazda can do them for £40... is this right? do they go and check the car for you? If so should i go down there with the mazda mechanic to make sure he doesnt get paid to say its better than it is? lol...

Is this a specialist jap importer - if so the comp test request shouldn\'t be an issue.

If this is the original engine without proof of rebuild I would\'t risk it unless you think it\'s worth 8.5k as that\'s what you could end up spending within the next year.

well its from F1 Autos .net in Southampton docks so yes they are a specialist jap importer...

But i understand that NO importers know if their cars have been rebuilt because of documents getting lost from japan...????
who does rebuilds for £2,500 then? I thought they were like £3,500 - well from reworx anyway!
Title: So I\'ve found an RX7...
Post by: Jit on April 19, 2007, 11:23:41 PM
get it compression tested....ask them to take the car to somewhere like rx motors or reworx and get the compression test done. if it transpires the car is on its original engie, then walk away...the water jacket are on the plate will probably fail sometime soon.
some builders such as rx motors will rebuild for 2600 as long as you dont need new parts...the more parts ned replacing, the higher the cost gets!

yeh i will phone up and ask them that...

i reckon they will say no if i ask them to take the car to somewhere like rx motors or reworx and get the compression test done though :(

theyre in southampton so not too sure which is the local Rotary tuners to them?

just about to buy the car in an hour or so...
phoned up the garage and asked about a compression test - he said if i buy it they will compression test it for me - if the results are bad he simply wont well me the car anyway!
fair enough i thought...? wish me luck!

Y???????????? That sound dodgy as hell to me mate.No one in their right mind would buy a car without test driving it first, you SHOULD NOT have to pay for it before you drive it.Ok maybe its to do with insurance reasons in case you crash it but he must be covered for that being a garage.Go into any main dealer VW,Ford etc and ask to test drive a car....no problems, no money up front.

Definitely something going on IMO.

AST stands for Air Seperation Tank.

ok so the latest news... damn this is turning out to be a mission...!!!!

i phoned up F1 Autos to get my deposit back... spoke to the receptionist and she asked why i wanted it back... i tell her simply because i had to pay the full amount before i was even allowed a test drive!
she said "really... thats strange - sometimes that does happen but ill speak to my manager and phone back"
5 mins later i get a phone call and she says they\'ll phone me tomorrow as they are about to close but they are gonna try to sort out a test drive!!!!???????

wtf?

apparently the salesman who was showing me the car and who ive been contacting the whole time is the "sales manager" and they "leave him to sort out his own sales" so to speak :S

really not sure what to do now as it could just be an annoying salesman thats the problem but if i do go back there i\'ll be demanding a new salesman to serve me...

Make sure that on any of the paperwork you have, if you have any, that it doesn\'t say that the deposit is non refundable.  If it doesn\'t just say you want you money back, plain and simple.

I think these guys sounds a bit strange to put it mildly - it\'s not like you\'re buying a 500 quid banger here.

When I bought the convertible from RoTechniks last year they even delayed shutting up shop on a Saturday so I could go and try it out.

I\'d go somewhere where I\'d have the feeling that my business is appreciated.

so f1 autos rang me back today and after speaking to "the boss" they are arranging a test drive for me... i have asked for a different salesman as i will not buy any car off the first one!
so the boss or the boss\' personal assistant is going to do show me the car for the test drive and they aer phoning me on monday to arrange it...

seems like a bit of a turn-around to be honest?

any suggestions? :)
oh yeh it hasnt been undersealed! that needs to be done doesnt it?

p.s  forgot to mention its not just me that went and saw the car - i was with my mate who has an fd too! so hopefully he would spot anything unusual... i\'ll most likely get him to test drive it! And all that for under £6k ?

RE: NOT LETTING MY HEART GET TO IT...
I just dont want to let it go IF it is a decent RX7...? Its pretty perfect on paper as it looks in mint condition, in a rare colour, pretty new compared to most rx7s around meaning i can also put my private plate on it!

i know what you\'re trying to say but surely if a compression test and coolant pressure test showed that it was all well, its all good right?
surely im not being stupid with this? thats why there was no chance i was buying it without a test drive at least in the first place!

just so i know - what coolant pressure tests should i be expecting for a decent engine?

thx! nick.

This is no longer about the car, its about you. Even after it being trouble you are still pushing and thats why the boss is involved; they can see someone with the bit between their teeth and sense a sale coming either way. Hence the little turnaround and the promises.

I\'ve done it myself, at least once. You don\'t want to give up, even after you should. Christ i\'ve bought some ****! Sooner or later you learn that if its that much trouble it just isn\'t meant to be.

Every time i\'ve bought something really good its happened really easily, fallen into my lap. Every time i\'ve tried to hard, not given up and ignored the advice of people telling me what i am telling you now i\'ve regretted it.

PLEASE just stop and wait a week. Twenty quid says it\'ll dawn on you, once you\'ve accepted you won\'t jump in, that its just not right. Broken bumper, no test drives, no testing until you\'ve bought it (and if it fails you get all your money back - purlease!), salesman who are suddenly cut loose to keep you happy as you keep coming back regardless, then you can do the test, then this, then that.

Walk away PLEASE and in two weeks you\'ll find another and it will be better and it won\'t be hassle and you\'ll realise how wrong this one is. RX-7s in good nick on original engines are pouring off boats CONSTANTLY; there are millions of them.

When i was looking i saw three and i thought the first was good until i saw the second, then the third was better still. I know what i am like (like you, by the sound of it!) and i had to try so hard to keep a level head and not jump in head first too early. Then i found a beauty.

So have some patience, walk away and keep looking.

Andy

(or am i just going round in circles now?)
