Ok
Could someone please take a look at the pic and tell me I\'ve undone/removed enough to free the turbos.
I\'ve undone all the small pipes and stuff
Thanks
Undo the 2 bolts with the "U" on as well :)
Ant
Thanks Ant
There will be more..........................
John
Lost the engine through water leak and looking at the rotors as they come round, tips look intact and there\'s no swarf or bits in the turbos just oily gunge so fingers crossed
Do a step by step of your progress with pics? (would be interested to see).
Will think about doing a progress report but for now have another problem to resolve.
Almost down to the block but can\'t budge the pully nut, so far I\'ve split a
19mm socket, used a better quality one and split the extension bar.
I guess the only way is to take the block to a garage who have air tools, so looks like I\'ve ground to a halt for today.
John
You probably need a 3/4 inch breaker bar, thats what I had to use to remove it on the 12A.
How are you going to remove the fylwheel nut, then ! ?

I found that nut to be a right PITA - the reat where easy in comparison! I used lots of heat, braced the engine and used a suitable breaker bar.
Lots of bad language is also reccomended :Giggle
john im in solihull
give me a bell if you need the f/w removal tool, 54mm socket and or a hand

air impact tools are the way to go for those flywheel\\front pully bolts :D
Well the pully finally came of with the second air tool first one just wasn\'t up to it.
The flywheel was a mission, manufactured a pull plate, heat and hammer took a lot of encouragement but it\'s off [thanks to Craig] - now down to the middle bit.
Any more suprises lurking in there?????
Well it\'s in bits, apart from the front pulley and flywheel it wasn\'t too bad.
I\'ve taken about 130 pics and although it looks a mess in the attached pic, there is a system. I have three rows and I will start where I laid the last bit.
Just seem to have mislaid the valves, but i\'m sure i\'ll find them. :rollin
Will it be back together for the spring meet at Haynes Museum, perhaps we ought to take the opotunity to lobby them for an FD book.
Are you going to port it John? or anything special while it\'s out?
Good luck Bob
tbh I think I\'m past the age of wanting more tham the original spec delivers. Sad I know but there it is.
Also I\'m of the mind that when Mazda created the FD they built the engine with a balance of durability [don\'t all laugh at once] and performance in mind, albeit with no consideration to fuel economy whatsoever.
John
Go on John you know you want a bridge port in there:Laugh
Quotetbh I think I\'m past the age of wanting more than the original spec delivers. Sad I know but there it is.
Likewise John, i\'m sat here wondering why iv\'e bought a pfc, huge DP, Dolphin ex, and saving for a mid pipe! when the car runs perfect never floods pops or bangs.
I\'d rather be building a Rotary that my scorpio thats just lost a conrod thing!,
Hope all goes smoothly with it, see you at haynes meet, that\'ll be two silver FD. s
Bob
I\'ve taken the plenum off and was expecting more pipes, is this the normal amount or as someone said it has less being a later model
John, mine\'s a 92 and definitely has many more pipes than that.
John
thats because its a later model, the rats nest was replaced with that black box, this contains a load of air ways which replace the pipes seen on the earlier models...very neat and tidy....
good work John

Hayward Rotary
Ok
I\'ve built the block and have started to reassemble all the other stuff.
I\'m sure i\'ll get it all back together in the end but if there\'s anyone around my area thats done this before and could spare a little time, the help would be most appreciated.
John
OK anyone in my area got the dreaded 54mm socket?
i have one you can borrow john
im by you to if you want to come collect it

Hi John,
You offered to help me when I was doing mine so I\'ll return the favour. Any questions or broken bits etc. Mines off the road so we can rape and pillage if need be.

Back together at last.
Thanks to all those who ahelped along the way.
The car + engine of off to be checked over and joined together on Tues.
I hope it works after all this.

John
That has gotta be THE most nerve racking part of the whole build imo:2Rolleyes
What parts did you replace then john? Did you reuse the housings, apex seals etc
I was lucky, as it was a water leak I stopped driving it.
Carl examined the rotors, housings and plates and said they were all in v/good nick so took his advice and did all the seals, tips, \'o\' rings etc.
The only non broke thing he advised me to replace was the water pump.
John
Sounds like the same situation as me. All plates look good nick, but the gasket on the waterpump is a right sod to get off. I may as well replace the thing. How much was it john?
Didn\'t seprate the parts by price just paid a lump sum for all the bits.
Didn\'t have any trouble with the water pump gasket - the funny shaped one or the regular shaped one on the housing to block?
Only had one bolt left over as well, pretty pleased with that.
I never had trouble with any other gaskets. I used loctite 7200 gasket remover, but it dont wanna shift the gasket on the waterpump plate with the wheel on. I\'ve tried everything, blow torch, boiling water, even a wire brush in a drill. Im just gonna replace it whiles it\'s off. Was just wondering how much they cost?
I’ve just checked the date I started this post, 14th April, with car coming off the road in March it\'s about 10 weeks…………..took a long time.
Well it’s running again, not perfect but very close and I’m pretty chuffed that it goes at all.
I can’t take all the credit and claim it was a total DIY job, so as per award ceremonies there are ppl I would like to thank.
Knowing Carl was always there in the background to offer his expertise and advice was invaluable, not forgetting his great team who answered all the noob questions professionally without making me look stupid.
I don’t think I would have tackled the project without the support from Hayward Rotary.
Another great guy from the Forum [although his FD is LS1] Craig [tinker27] who took the engine out for me and is booked to tidy up an oil leak from the sump, my fault.
And Gary, I found the rebuilt DVD’s he sells a tremendous help, would have struggled without them.
So apart from the oil leak, running-in and check over I think I’m just about sorted.
Tell you what though sitting behind an engine when you know every nut and bolt intimately is a scary thing, all those things that could go wrong.
Still I guess I’ll find it easier next time aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
