Title: How would you prolong the life of your rotary ?
Post by: RobPhobos on April 13, 2007, 08:40:39 AM
Just out of curiosity, say you were pushing around 500Bhp, what would you do to make sure the wee rotary doesn\'t need a visit to the rebuilders every 6 months or year ?

Just accept that an engine designed to put out 250-280 bhp pushing out 500bhp will require much more maintenance if you actually use the power.

Clearly there are certain key things that can be done to prolong the life of any rotary... ensuring cooling is sufficient is probably the most important!

Rebuilt It!

2 hours to take it out,
2 hours to strip it,
2 hours to clean it,
2 hours to re assemble,
2 hours to fit accessories
2 hours to refit to car!
Job done

Real low boost, downside is you won\'t be making 500 brake.

Don\'t drive the bugger...!!

But that kinda defeats the object.

As said before, keep your cooling under control. Ensure all consumables are maintained properly (oil, filters, etc etc)

Run WI
Run Premix

These  two things will help it to ensure you have low combustion temps, less heat is good, and Premix will ensure good lube of the seals when running higher power as the stock OMP does not really provide enough lubrication at high HP levels, so with good lube and WI you are less likely to warp your seals

spot on  :cheers  ................   my sentiments entirely, other than rebuilding it of course!

nope, i wouldnt build them for others if you paid me!   I couldnt think of anything worse than being a Rotary engine builder/tuner for a living.  Your customers are never going to be satisfied for long!

Don\'t drive it, Just look at it and Polish it just for god sake don\'t drive it.... LOL

Only Joking, I\'d have to agree with the Lower boost theory, if you have it set up foir 500hp does\'nt mean you have to run that all the time. Plus to make a Rotary last takes Lots of TLC and Respect for the car.

i agree they are sensitive engines but i dont think delicate is the right word as when they are set up right they really can last well considering the power. I did seriously look into using a different engine but decided against it on a purely cost basis.  For me everything else is more expensive but i would definately back anyone doing a V8 conversion.

If the water temps are good, the intake temps are good, the tune is safe and you rung w/i and premix they will run long and hard. Where you encounter problems is when one of the above is slightly out the chances it will fail whereas another power plant might survive.

I\'m no rotary fanatic, far from it but they work for me and they are what i know.

nah 7k miles and 4 months on two engines is good i think    lets see how long the 3rd engine will last

should a normal stock car last longer with premix then?

If you are running an engine that is producing twice it\'s original power you have to face up to the fact that it will need frequeent maintenance. \'aint no way around it.
My old 4 cylinder race engine would be refreshed evey season - that is only around 300-400 miles! if it wasn\'t it would be much more likley to fail the following season.

Power costs. The End.

Just under 4K hard driven miles on the HB and going strong (Premis baby :D), record for me, 1st engine I done when OMP failed on the rear rotor was only 2K miles, the second one I done was warping the seals on the front rotor not enough lube at high boost that was 2K miles as well again OMP is cr%p for high HP.

So premix is working well for me at the mo now with added AQ WI :D, I think next time I blow it Im gonna have a go at it myself in terms of rebuild get Era to teach me. But I have a feeling that wont be for another 10K miles at least

12k on 500 as a daily. OMP no premix or water injection running at 1.1 bar. Gets ragged as often as traffic conditions allow. Was going pre mix but Pip more or less talked me out of it. Finding some wood to touch right now.

Hmmm clicked quote not edit.

sorry to be ignorant but what does premix mean??
Title: How would you prolong the life of your rotary ?

adding 2-stroke oil to the petrol on fill up at a ratio of 100:1 to 200:1 depending if you have the OMP still installed or not

thats good going, its obviously a strong engine with a good tune.  :guinness

Do you run it at 1.1 bar all the time, i\'m suprised your gearbox is holding out!

1.1 or 0.8 use 1.1 by far the most though :)

Gearbox changed last week. At around 150quid for a good used one thought I may aswell just keep changing them until a proven upgrade comes to light (keeping an eye on warthogs progress.)

Engine built by JD. I might have a \'modified\' OMP of some sort but have never managed to speak to him, not even sure he realy exists! Should give Kerim a call again and find out. The car had 5k and been run at .8 since a 2k run in when it came to me. I took it to Pip for bigger injectors and boost increase.

Jay\'s engines do seem to make very good power,  I agree about the gearbox thing though, let someone else do the R&D
