Title: Cars Booked in for the MOT
Post by: grinder on April 12, 2007, 10:19:30 AM
Hiya chaps

well the car is booked in for the MOT on the 21st of April

should i start my yearly panic now ???

also got my insurance and tax renewal thru aswell as the insurance for the rover due

i can picture this being an expensive month to be honest !! LOL

the RX7 insurance isnt tooooooooooo bad - just a touch under £300 with a list of mods aslong as my arm - hopefully gonna remove a lot of them from the insurance and see if it will make a difference as well as trying to remove the breakdown cover as im already with the AA

here\'s hoping the car will pass the MOT - i really cant be bothered with it any longer and i need it to pass so that i can sell it with a 12 month ticket

i have had a look underneath and have seen 2 suspect spots - so might have a good prod around tonight and see if its just on the surface or if it runs deeper than that :(

i will keep you all posted

Stu

i need more than faith - more of nice solid metal holding it all together :D

like i said - will have a good nosey tonight and have a prod - this way i have a week to fix what i can see - then the rest is in the hands of god

maybe a few coats of underseal wont go amiss either ( although i reckons its had the best part of 15 litres of the stuff in the last few yrs ) :D

Hmmm - You\'re standard MOT thread normally has a list of parts you are going to be selling if it fails, given that theres no list I reckon you are not too worried :D

And don\'t go prodding too hard...
Title: Cars Booked in for the MOT
Post by: grinder on April 12, 2007, 11:17:10 AM
to be honest mate - im not overly worried

if its that bad i will tow it to a scrap yard :D

OR if its not cost effective to fix - i will just break the car

already got a buyer for the engine and box - just need to get shut of the rest of it ! LOL

got my insurance down to £273.10 by taking off the breakdown ( got AA cover ) and when i sell the coupe and get the cab on the road - they reckon that a charge of about £60 will apply ( down to the fact that i havent owned it that long - and they offer discounts on the time you have owned the car for )

gonna be a fun few weeks i reckon ( and very costly )

yeah usually its panic stations about now and you got your welding equipment out.

i think you should be ok this year, you did loads of stuff to it last year to get it through and then you didnt really drive it.
Title: Cars Booked in for the MOT
Post by: grinder on April 12, 2007, 11:20:03 AM
thats the prob nas - when you dont drive them they rust quicker as your not heating the chassis with the exhaust - so any damp in there rots the car rather then being eveporated with heat

so it "could" be an issue

my mate has my welder at the mo - but its a dab hand with it - so if it needs welding - that will be the charge for him borrowing it for the last 8 months - he can weld my car up

to be honest - there cant be much left of the original car - its had a lot of welding done - and new plates should last more than 12 months :D

Remeber if it goes south i\'ll have the engine and gearbox off you :D

Hope it all goes to plan and the car gets through ok. They are very fair and either richard or steve will give you a good inspection.

yeah i know they are fair :D

you name is already penciled on the engine and box if need be shaun

i prefer not to do down that route to be honest

although i can do you a good deal on the car and a full FMIC system :D

and you can break the rest of it ??

nah mark ,

need to get shut of everything to be honest

1 - FMIC
2 - Strut Braces ( rear and front lower )
3 - Full coil overs and camber plates
4 - vented headlight cover
5 - drivers bucket seat
6 - safc D1 limited edition
7 - blitz piggy back ecu

etc.. etc..

lots of stuff to sell and i thought throwing the FMIC in with the coupe would get me some money back on it ?

coil overs eh.........?

hmmmm

MUST STOP SPENDING MONEY ON THE FC!

(I just gave RX motors £x (where x is an unfeasably large number) + stuff from Nengun and I\'ve got to give Prof some cash for the front lip next week as well)

hang on chaps :D - you getting a bit adventourous trying to get your dirty mitts on my stuff

well just been having a prob around and the old welding is standing up fine - lovely and solid and no signs of ANY rust

prob is where is HASNT been welded - managed to put a hole in the rear back of the sill ( where it hasnt been welded ) - but its a really small hole ( thank god )

its about 7 cms long by about 3mm accross - so not sure if it needs to be plated or if i can fill it with the welder - its where the cill meets the body ( there is a flange ) and its right on the flange

flange seems pretty solid - just not sure if i can weld a plate on that small to be honest ( and trying not to remove the side skirts )

apart from that - had a really good bang with the end of a screw driver ( the bit you hold ) and it all sounds fine

so whilst i was out , i undersealed the drivers side back arch ( one less job to do )

gonna let my mate have a look - we have just over a week to sort it out - so shouldnt be a huge problem :D

not checked the other side - but its tight up against the fence - so not a cat in hells chance of looking at it

Stu

bit of an update on this thread as the MOT looms closers

1 - took the cill cover off
2 - my mate came over
3 - let him loose with the grinder
4 - cut the rust out
5 - plate welded on
6 - liberal application of under seal on new plate
7 - had a bang round on the passenger side - looks nice and solid :D

.... go in drink beer ... sleep

today ( 18th April )

1 - had another prob round - looks nice and solid under there
2 - put the cill cover back on

car is now ready as it ever will be for the MOT on sat - i dont think there is much more i can do now

everything works on the car and all the wipers work etc... so its in the hands of "god" now - just have to wait and see

so if all goes well on sat - look out for a 1990 TII Coupe ( UK ) for sale at a reasonable cost :D

Just had my pre mot check. It needs one small patch welding in the passenger side front arch, Passenger side wheel bearing needs nipping up as it has a small amount of play in it. which is better than I expected. other than that it wants a good clean up underneath with a wire brush and some underseal. Booked in for next friday for the mot.
Title: Cars Booked in for the MOT
Post by: grinder on April 20, 2007, 10:46:17 AM
the wheel bearing is an easy job

but it doesnt sound too bad

cant believe the MOT is tomorrow - already panicing :(

i will keep you all informed
Title: Cars Booked in for the MOT
Post by: TiddlesRX7 on April 20, 2007, 10:48:31 AM
I presume its just a case of removing the cap off the bearing and then you can get at it? fingers crossed for you by the way.
Title: Cars Booked in for the MOT
Post by: grinder on April 20, 2007, 10:50:09 AM
yeah its not tooo bad

1 - jack up
2 - remove wheel
3 - remove cover
4 - remove split pin
5 - then tighten to about 18lb-ft
6 - re-assemble

have a search on either here or rx7club.com - there is a full write up somewhere

or its in the factory service manual ( i think )

good man :D :D

well today has been **** to say the least :(

took car down at 9:30 AM and they had a tranny van stuck on the ramp with half a gearbox

left my number and they said they would phone when it was off

12:30 i phoned up and some lad said it was still there - and someone would phone back

4:10 i phoned up and low and behold - no one there

so now im not happy

the mot expires today , tax at the end of the month and the insurance on the 28/29 of this month

and a car with no mot sat on the driveway

so not happy at all :(

i dont think it helped with getting my exhaust back soo late - i wanted it at the end of march so that i could get the MOT done early - but it just didnt happen - so when i got it back and fitted it was last sunday and this was the first MOT slot available

so now i have no idea what to do - the next slot for the mot will have to be next sat and if it fails then .. well .... there will be a vid on here of me kicking the crap out of my FC and setting fire to it

not impressed !!

Stu

thanks chaps

yeah i know i can drive it without tax or mot to the station

its the insurance that runs out next week thats a worry

and i cant tax it without a MOT , so i might end up delclaring it off road and if im doing that , then there is no point insuring it either

nowt is simple with these cars - although i have stopped worrying to be honest - this is life and its never a simple journey !!

Hang in there stu. Dont let the buggers get to you. You should try living on an island where they get freaked out when ever the mot man sees me in case I have finally finished my project! half the island is talking about the crazy aussie and what he does to his morris minor.

ricco - yeah i think so

say it fails on welding on the monday - and you take it to get fixed on a wednesday and get pulled

if you can prove that its going for a repair then you are OK

you would have to prove that its booked in for work doing ref the MOT

i will keep you updated on the progress though - what more annoying is that i have buyers lined up for the car with a 12 month MOT

the good bit to all this - the cab started up fine after being stood for about 7 weeks and ran like a dream

i really think it needs a good run - the auto box seems to take a while to engage drive - but im not sure if thats normal or not ??
