Title: Anybody using a HKS wastegate?
Post by: Lum on April 11, 2007, 09:40:38 PM
I\'m having some problems with my new single turbo setup. Hopefully somebody can help?
I\'m using a HKS wastegate, It is the special racing wastegate i believe.
It currently has a yellow spring in it which is rated by hks at 0.8-1.1 bar:3Confused
Does this mean my boost controller can hold the boost at 0.8 bar? Because i\'m having real trouble sourcing a lower rated spring! The 0.8 part of the rating is fine however 1.1 bar is too high for a base setting!
Anybody else using this wastegate setup? What spring do you have?
Thanks for any help

Hi,
There is an adjuster for the plate that pushes on the spring too,if this is done up tight then you will get the higher pressure setting, and conversly if loosened off the lower boost. It is on the back of the wastegate.
If you have a boost controller then you can adjust the boost to the level that you like as long as it is more or the same as the spring is set too.
If you put say a 7psi spring in,then you can adjust the boost from that boost and above with a boost controller.
Regards
Carl

As Carl said the spring pressure is the min pressure you can set and the controller takes it above this. If 0.8 is too much for you its not a big job to weaken the spring to lower this, then use the controller for your desired boost level. This way if you have a fault with the controller and it stops working it defaults to a weak spring pressure.

Thanks for the advice guys.
Carl- Don\'t think my wastegate has a adjuster on it. Where should it be? on the top?
I have done some net research and it appears i may have the HKS standard wastegate not the special racing version as the guy at sumo power told me when i described it.
I have this wastegate (http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u43/lum90/standwg.jpg)

The spring in it is defo yellow though and does not open till above 1 bar which is odd as RHD japan does not list a yellow spring for the standard wastegate?
I\'ve ordered a blue one from them which is too fit the HKS standard wastegate and rated at approx 0.7 bar hopefully this will fit!
Can anybody confirm which wastegate i have? and if it has a adjuster, where i will find it?

But as you have said, yours appears to be not adjustable.

Lum, I have a 7psi spring if you\'d like to borrow it?

Carl- Thanks for the advice mate, fairly sure mine isn\'t adjustable as there is only a vac hose inlet on the top, no bolt.

nik- That would be a great help mate, means i can get the car properly mapped and boost controller set up this weekend!  i\'ve ordered one but could be a while.

Im using the HKS special wastegate, the lowest rated spring is 0.8-1.1 and there not adjustable, surley if the exhaust and wastegate are\'nt to restrictive you should be able to run at 0.8 with out a boost controller no prob\'s

Do you know what colour the spring is in ur wastegate?
I now think mine may be the HKS standard wastegate.
With the boost controller turned off the wastegate doesn\'t open until 1 bar, if it opened at 0.8 that would be fine.

I was gonna say RHD sell the springs.  Think lowest is 0.8 Bar.

0.8 is the lowest for the special wastegate, im sure there is lower rated springs for the normal wastegate\'s

Thanks for the advice guys.
I\'m now pretty sure that i have the standard wastegate not the special one. It was a guy at sumo power that told me i had the special one and said he would order me a 0.7 bar spring. However they only make a spring this low for the standard gate so looks like he hasn\'t got a clue :xconfused and i\'m gonna get the rite spring :Thumbsup!
Ordered another one from RHD japan just to be sure though, and by the sound of it that will turn up alot sooner than the one from sumo ( on back order, could be 4 weeks).
In the meen timei\'ve borrowed a spring and we\'ll hopefully be mapping the car tommorow :D

0.8 low
1.00 high

to be honest low boost setting is fine all day long in town, high boost is just unecessary, but then isn\'t all indulgance...
