A private member\'s bill being debated in the House of Commons could have a massive impact on enthusiast motoring in the UK.
The bill is currently aimed at two wheeled transport, but it doesn’t take much to imagine it being quietly targeted at cars later on.
The Off-Road Registrations Bill was proposed originally by the MP Graham Stringer as a means to deal with nuisance mini-moto riders. Local constituents had complained about hoards of motocycle riding youths riding illegally across private land.
Although no one is arguing that this isn’t a problem that should be tackled, the proposed solution is incredibly heavy handed. The thinking is that if every mini-moto was registered with the DVLA and wore a number plate the offenders could be traced and prosecuted. Whether these offenders would therefore choose to register their bikes is an entirely different matter.
However, the DVLA has confirmed that to gain a licence plate, every bike would have to conform to the Road Traffic Act -- with no exceptions. In simple terms, this would mean that every bike, from track day machines, racing bikes and hill climbers to custom bikes; from last year’s ex-Rossi GP bike to 100 year old museum pieces would need to be road registered. As it would be impossible for the majority of these bikes to meet these requirements, under law they would be liable for confiscation and destruction. The motorcycle racing industry in this country would be wiped out at a stroke.
The bill has gained a worrying amount of momentum so far in the debating process - with Tony Blair said to be a supporter â€" although at present the Minister of Transport is said to be opposed to it. Imagine what it would do to track day and race cars in this country if it were applied to four-wheeled transport.
:xconfused
to be honest this doenst surprise me
they always hit the motorist - and we take all the abuse they dole out
its simple really :(
i think the mini motors should be registered - it might keep them off the streets - but i dont see what it should apply to ALL bikes
at the end of the day - if all the racers got their bikes out and played in the road - then i would make them register them - but they dont - so the government doesnt bother
its the mini moto idiots who use them on the road/streets that cause this problem - not the mature people who use them where it doenst bother anyone
ekkk thats a rant !! LOL
Stu
Does a bill like this really suprise anyone ???
If they went ahead with the road tax by mile thingy then they would know where you are at all times but more importantly exactly how fast you have been going, where ever you have been !!!!! I\'m sure every single person in the UK that drives has been over 70mph :2Rolleyes
we should all stop using our cars for a month and just see what happens to the transport system - that would be ammusing
Agree with Stu. If its on the road it should be registered.
But do they really think it will make a difference. The kids that ride these round in public areas couldn\'t give a sh*t for the law so will continue to do it while the hard working honest bloke gets his trousers pulled down and b*ggered by Tony.
i thought that they had banned all sales of the mini-moto\'s ??
to be honest - i would love one - but as there is no where to legally use one - i cant see the point
im just waiting now for the government introducing the "if you car is declared SORN it still needs to be insured" that will screw a LOT of people over
Next they\'ll want me to make my lawnmower road legal because it has an engine and moves on wheels!!!!
Prevention is the key, stop the next person riding on the road and crush their bike, see how long it takes for the rest of them to register their bikes.

Buy a rifle and pick off the little Chav B*stards as they whiz around illegally.....:evillaugh
Would be doing society a favour on many fronts, helping raise the average IQ by culling the dimwits, reducing our taxation by removing sponging, scrounging neer-do-wells, and making local council estates safer for the ageing spongers who were responsible for the pro-creation of the lawless little brats in the first place....:Giggle
Oh, and helping reduce the amount of cheap Chinese scrap metal on the streets.......
:rollin :rollin :Thumbsup! I like your thinking!
in the spirit of the piece...
