Title: How To - Change Your Knock Sensor
Post by: Red and Single on April 10, 2007, 08:22:24 AM
Many of us running PFC\'s will know that we have dodgy knock sensors giving readings that if they were real, would no doubt result in a rebuild.

I replaced mine yesterday, it was not difficult...just long-winded.

Here is my "how to".... Please bare in mind I\'m single turbo so your car may be slightly different.... You might want to change your spark plugs while you are doing this job.

Tools... Socket set, 24mm spanner or similar, car jack.

Purchase your new knock sensor (got mine from Clive)

Remove intake elbow.

Disconnect the battery.

Disconnect the electrical connections to the alternator.

Note the ammount of tension in the alternator belt (ammount of twist you can apply to it)

Undo and remove the belt tensioner system on the alternator ( 2 bolts and a nut) .

Undo the alternator mounting bolt (bottom left)

Undo the air pump belt tensioner (bottom left)

Release the air pump swivel mount.

Remove belt from alternator.

Slacken off the bracket which the alternator belt tensioner mounts too.

Remove Alternator.

Jack up the car (front nearside )

Remove undertray.

The knock sensor is fitted just above the trailing plug in the front rotor housing.

Note where the wire goes (single wire)

Lower the car again...

Find the connector for the knock sensor which is behind where the alternator was mounted.

Carefully disconnect the sensor, remember how old your wiring is....be gentle !!

Be sure to take a mental a note of the path that the wire takes.

Jack car up again, remove the sensor 24mm spanner required, I didn\'t have one so I used a 1", good enough. To ease access I removed the trailing plug and lead.

Fit the new sensor and route the wire back where the old one went.

Connect her up and refit everything in reverse order.

Not the easiest of jobs, but worth doing yourself to save a few quid.

Good luck.
