Title: GTO twinturbo/RX7 costs
Post by: krang_RX7 on April 08, 2007, 01:00:41 PM
hi again
About 2 years ago i used to own a 1992 K reg mitsubishi GTO twin turbo import, i bought the car thinking it was fine, looked a nice example tinted windows and tinted lights all round etc but when it had its MOT found a lot wrong with it forked out 3 grand to pass the MOT and have service and still wasnt working right so sold it after just 6 months of ownership, so what im saying is how do RX7 and GTO running costs and part costs compare as i dont want another expensive mistake...
Also what i was thinking about doing is buying a rex for say 6-7k ish then get a ford probe for a grand and have that on 3rd party insurance to lower my costs (reason being i owned a probe for 3 years and loved it also need space from time to time which the rex dont have).
Im thinking of doing this in the next year or so as after being stung by the GTO i bought a 1.8 MG ZR just to try and lower my costs and recover from the past experiance.

i would say the running costs are similar between the 2. The main problem rotary engines suffer from is water seal damage meaning it needs rebuilding. It\'s best to get a rex allready rebuilt with certificate/reciept proving the work done. You should be able to buy a nice single turbo fd for around £7000

You\'re asking about running costs, but in realirt is sounds like you got stung with repair costs. Either a GTO or RX7 is going to be hideously expensive to fix if you get a bad one; much more important to buy a good one in the first place :)

I owned a GT for 4 years.  I bought a near brand new UK spec version, and apart from losing almost 30k it was a near bullet proof car!

The head gasket went, but I manged to get a mechanic from the local mits garage to look after my car, so it was fixed a lot cheaper!

Did some simple stuff like change the exhaust and filters.  But otherwise kept it standard.

Don\'t skimp on brakes though.....went for a set of none OEM stuff and they were the worst brakes Ive ever fitted!

Its a very heavy car, 1.8 tonnes, but it handles rather well.  I took it out on track a couple of times.

Don\'t be frightened by all of the electronics that are present.  There is active yaw control, 4WS, 4WD....to quote but a few.

But Id still go for an RX7!

If you are looking to buy a car that is not going to cost alot to run i would sugest looking at one of the Small single turbo cars that has a fresh rebuilt engine fitted (with all the recipts for the work done) then find some one who has owned an FD for a while near you or get a Garage (who knows there rotarys, most likly has a banner at the top) to give it a Look over with you and most importantly drive it and before all this takes place do LOTS!!! of reading up on faults and what it should and should\'nt have.

If you go to see one the most important thing is don\'t buy it on impulse, i know lots of people that have seen pritty FD\'s and bought it with there heads in the clouds and ended up spending a Bit more than 3k on it withing a week of ownership (and that was not for its MOT :yes)

NOTE. When i say not cost alot to run that does not include Fuel and Insurance :(
