hi, I\'m running a a turbo 2 convertible that has developed a worrying and annoying problem.
The warning buzzer keeps coming on randomly and for no reason, I\'ve checked coolant and oil but they are both fine.
also dirving home today, the rev counter, oil pres, boost, and temp guage stopped working, I guess this a fuse gone, could the two be related?
thanks for any help, only had the car a few days, and I need it on sunday to travel a fair few miles. cheers.
Sounds like electrical gremlins :(
On cars this age it\'s not unusual - could be earthing issues or a bad connector. Most of the connectors are pretty well hidden for the dash - but check out the connectors around the engine bay and make sure they are all \'home\' - also check battery connectors are good and battery state is healthy (close to 12v when the ignition switch is off, 14v or similar when the engine is running).
Does any of the warning lights light up when the buzzer sounds?
TBH it does sound to me like you\'ve got an electrical problem somewhere in the loom rather than a fuse problem, especially with most of your dashboard going south like that.
Nevertheless, I\'d go and check both fuse boxes (drivers side footwell and under the bonnet), pull out all fuses and check them for signs of overheating and clean the contacts in the fusebox using electrical contact cleaner.
If you can\'t resurrect the dashboard I\'d be very wary of driving the car anywhere as you can\'t see if it\'s getting too hot or anything like this. And when you notice, it was too late already.
Oh, and welcome!
... and to add to what Prof said, it may be a good idea to clean up the connections in the loom with electrical contact cleaner as well.
I\'m sure the CPU that controls the lights and gauges suffers from cold solder on the circuit board I\'m not sure if this is the problem but might be worth a check.
I lost all power to the clock on the dash and stuff once it was the fuse marked "room".
Hope this helps
Paul
none of the warning lights come on, how do I try to cure the cold solder on the CPU?
In addition, the warning lights dont come on with the ignition, and the heater fan doesn\'t work.
could someone please talk me thorough this step by step in detail, mechanical probs i\'m fine with but a blown fuse is about the extent of my electrical knowledge
can you explain what happens step by step
1 - what happens when you put the ignition on but dont start the car
2 - what happens when the car is running ?
i would check fuses first - i blew the room fuse and the car went mad - radio stopped , clock stopped , door lights came on and it said the boot was open ??
failing that is the CPU - this is in the drivers footwell as the side of the fuses - i can get you a phone number of a chap who is breaking one if need be
cheers
stu
Also, wiggle the key in the ignition - sometimes the switch part at the other end of the ignition barrel goes wonky with all sorts of interesting results.
tried the wiggling key thing, but that didnt work.
what happens is: I turn the ignition, the the posittion just before starting the engine, here the warning lights usually come on in the console, but now they dont. The engine starts fine but the boost, oil press, temp, and fuel gauge do not move. also the cruise control and heater fan do not work.
I really apperciate the help you guys are giving me as this is doing my nut in.
That sounds very much like you\'ve either got a bad contact somewhere or most of the dashboard has fritzed itself.
I\'m afraid that the only way to figure this out is to methodically work your way around the wiring loom, undo every connector, check for corrosion and heat damage, squirt some electrical contact cleaner down there and reconnect them after checking for loose pins.
It\'s a pain in the backside to do but it\'s probably the only way to track down the problem.
Got to agree with Timo here - there is a main fuse (80A) in the engine bay fuse box - this feeds ingition key switch - and there are other fuses running off this - A lot of the dash stuff comes off one fuse - can\'t remember which one. There are 2 circuit breakers - one for the heated rear window, can\'t recall what the other one does - but try pressing these to reset them,
Also, do things like horn and hazard work ?
What you need to do is systematically work your way around the electricals - listing what does and does not work - this will help to identify where the fault is - but it does sound like the entire 12 feed to all the instruments and radio etc has gone - could be a fuse - likely to be one of the larger ones - like 20A so check all the fuses in the drivers footwell.
if it starts though - the ignition must have power to switch the starter motor
as always with the FC - start at the cheaper end
check all the fuse in the engine bay and in the drivers footwell
then work onto more expensive things like the CPU etc...
at least yours runs - i spend about 3 months trying to get mine to start :D
the horn, hazards and radio work, the hazard light comes up on the console but nothing else, I pulled the dash apart to check the board and the connections and they looked fine to me, I\'m gonna try and get down to rotechniks on tuesday, i\'m sure they can fix it quicker than me. thanks for the help so far i\'ll keep you posted.
sorry it took a while to get back to you, turned out to be a blown fuse, looked like a right prat at rotecknics, esecially after 4 people checked the fuse box including my self!
joker! you sometimes need to take each and every one out and examine and best change all if you dont know the age. :)
glad its sorted.
glad its sorted out :D
but you have to pull the fuses and check them in day light to - if you still arent sure a 30 check with a multimeter give you a 100% answer :D
