Title: What\'s this bit of tin?
Post by: TonyC on April 06, 2007, 11:36:33 AM
Underneath the gearbox there is a big old piece of tin. It looks like a undertray to provide some protection for the transmission, or to catch oil :D

Does it serve any particular purpose does anyone know?

if not, then I\'m going to get shut of it. It doesn\'t look strong enough to provide any bracing or strength - it is just a big ripped piece of steel. Runs from the bell housing back under the transmission.
Also, the scramer pipe (there\'s another noise problem for me to solve) has managed to burn a chunk of it off anyway :D

If memory serves me correctly with the undertray fitted it completes a tunnel type thing, so air going past the engine and down the tunnel has to go past the gearbox before going everywhere else.

Ah, I wonder if is using that airflow to help keep the gearbox cool, as the gearbox has ribs on it - a bit like the ribs or fins you see on an air cooled engine.
Thanks.

It is still heavy though - if it is useful I\'ll make up something in alloy sheet to do a similar job with les weight.
