hi,
i bought my first rx7 2 weeks ago,

bought her as a project as i new the water seals are going. got her really really cheap as well.
she\'s a 1993 import. think poss a type r, not to sure how to tell.(twin oil coolers, black roof lining.)
anyway turns out the loom had been rubbing behind the headlight. i know this coz it caught fire! i got to it quick so there\'s only a little damage to the loom which i think is fixable.
so i\'ve started to strip her for the rebuild.

so thats the story, here\'s the questions.
1, how much am i looking at for all the parts for a good rebuild as i\'m going to tune her up at a later date?
2, is there anything that might catch me out as i haven\'t worked on a rotary before although i have done many other cars?
3, i\'ve heard that the ceramic apex seals are the best but do i really need them as i\'m only looking to get over 400bhp as an end result for now?
thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks for any help in advance.

1. Id budget atleast 1800 in parts for a good rebuild. I know I spent a fair bit more than that. 1800 will prolly get you new seals and springs all round and new housings. You may find if its got a water seal problem, that you need a plate or two. If you want 400 bhp, youll want some sort of porting so if you get that work sent away itll cost around 300.
2. Not really. They are really easy to work on IMO.
3. IMO ceramic is overkill... a lot of money and variable results (Carl Hayward swears by them...Tim @ RX Motors doesnt ;) ) For that application, id go with mazda 3mm (bear in mind youll need to get the rotors machined to accept the 3mm seals which is more ££
if your going for 400bhp convert to single turbo now why the engines out and look out for bargains in for sale and build up your uprated bits why its stripped hav it street ported!!
How easy is it to do a DIY engine rebuild?
I\'m planning on keeping my car until the engine goes, then rebuilding it in me shed! :)
